How to Place an After-Market Order on NSE or BSE Before the Next Trading Session

An after-market order (AMO) lets you queue an equity buy or sell order with your broker after regular trading has ended so it can be sent to the exchange for the next eligible session. It is not an assured opening-price trade: a market AMO can fill at a changing price, while a limit AMO may remain unfilled. Before submitting, check the next NSE or BSE trading day, your broker’s segment-specific AMO deadline, circuit limits, funds or holdings, and any required sell authorisation.

The exact screens differ by broker, but the process is consistent: choose the exchange and security, select buy or sell, choose the product and quantity, set market or limit pricing, review the order, submit it as an AMO, and verify its status the next morning.

What an AMO does—and what it does not do

An AMO is an instruction accepted by a broker outside the exchange’s continuous trading hours. The broker holds it in its order system and submits it at a scheduled handoff for the next applicable trading session. Zerodha describes the function this way: “You can place After Market Orders (AMO) outside regular trading hours, and they execute once the market opens.” In practical terms, the order is a request to participate later, not a trade that has already reached the exchange.

  • Queued, not executed: An order showing AMO or pending in the broker app has not necessarily been sent to the exchange.
  • No guaranteed price: A market order takes the price available when it is matched. The first trade may be far from the previous close.
  • No guaranteed fill: Even after submission, the order can be rejected, partially filled, cancelled, or left unexecuted.
  • Session and segment dependent: Equity, derivatives, currency, and other segments can have different windows and order-type rules. The timings below concern equity unless stated otherwise.

Use an AMO when you cannot or do not want to enter an order during regular hours but still want it ready for the next session. Do not use it on the assumption that it locks the previous closing price or guarantees the opening print.

Check these conditions before opening the order screen

Confirm the next eligible trading day

Look at the exchange holiday calendar and any notice about a special session. If the next calendar day is a holiday, an AMO normally waits for the next applicable trading day; your broker’s order book should show the scheduled date. Special sessions can have different entry, matching, and cancellation controls, so read the broker notice rather than assuming a normal timetable.

Verify the broker’s AMO schedule

There is no single NSE/BSE-wide AMO cutoff that applies to every broker, product, and order type. Brokers decide when they stop accepting AMOs and when they transmit them. A documented Zerodha equity implementation accepts NSE and BSE AMOs from 16:00 until 08:58, sends equity market and limit AMOs at 09:00, and sends equity IOC, disclosed-quantity, stop-loss, and stop-loss-market orders at 09:15. Those times are an example of broker handling, not an exchange rule. Your broker may use a different window or disable AMO for a particular security.

Check security and product eligibility

Confirm that the instrument is listed on the exchange you selected and that the chosen product type is supported for it. A security can be available on NSE but not BSE, or vice versa. Some order varieties and products are restricted during overnight submission. If the app removes an order type, displays a segment warning, or asks you to use a different product, follow that validation instead of trying to bypass it.

Prepare money, holdings, and authorisation

For a buy, keep enough available funds for the order and any broker-required margin or charges. For a sell, check that the shares are in the correct demat holding and that the broker has the required delivery authorisation, such as a TPIN and one-time authorisation or an existing power of attorney where applicable. An order can be accepted into an AMO queue and still be rejected later if funds, holdings, or authorisation are missing when it is transmitted.

Check the permitted price range

Exchanges impose daily price bands or circuit limits on many securities. A limit price outside the currently permitted band may be rejected at entry. Zerodha notes that an AMO price outside the current day’s circuit limits cannot be placed until the exchange updates the limits for the following session; its support guidance cites an NSE update around 17:00 and a BSE update around 07:00 on the next trading day. Treat those times as that broker’s implementation and recheck the band shown in your own order ticket.

Step-by-step: place an AMO for the next session

  1. Open the broker’s AMO or scheduled-order area. Use the order type explicitly labelled AMO, overnight, or scheduled order. Do not assume an order entered in the normal live-order screen will be held overnight; some apps route it differently.
  2. Select the security and exchange. Search by the exact symbol, then choose NSE or BSE. Check the displayed company name, series or instrument identifier, and quote before continuing. Selecting the wrong exchange can change liquidity, price, and eligibility.
  3. Choose buy or sell. For a sell, select the holding or delivery product permitted by the broker and complete any TPIN, demat-debit, or other authorisation prompt. For a buy, confirm that the account has sufficient available funds at transmission time.
  4. Select product, quantity, and validity. Choose the supported delivery or other product, enter the exact quantity, and review the validity option. Do not select an intraday or special product merely because it appears in the menu; overnight eligibility varies by broker and instrument.
  5. Choose market or limit pricing. A market AMO prioritises participation but leaves the execution price open. A limit AMO sets the highest acceptable buy price or lowest acceptable sell price. Enter a limit within the permitted circuit range and remember that a limit can remain pending if the market never reaches it.
  6. Review the order ticket. Check symbol, exchange, side, quantity, product, price, validity, estimated funds, and disclosures. Read any warning about auction, trade-to-trade, surveillance, illiquidity, or restricted order types. Correct errors before submission; a queued AMO may not be editable after the broker’s transmission cutoff.
  7. Submit and authenticate. Confirm the order with the app’s PIN, password, or other authentication. Wait for an order number and a status such as AMO, pending, or open. A success message means the broker accepted the instruction into its queue, not that the exchange accepted it.
  8. Verify the order book and monitor the next session. Open the order book and capture the order number, exchange, scheduled date, and status. On the next trading morning, check whether it moved to sent, exchange accepted, partially filled, complete, rejected, or cancelled. If it is rejected, read the exchange or broker reason before placing a replacement.

Important NSE and BSE time windows

Exchange sessions and broker transmission schedules are different layers. The exchange controls when orders can enter pre-open, when matching occurs, and when continuous trading begins. The broker controls when it accepts your AMO and when it forwards that order. The following figures should therefore be read with their source and scope.

Stage Time or rule What it means
NSE equity pre-open order entry 09:00–09:10 The National Stock Exchange of India timetable lists this order-entry period. The system can close order entry randomly during the final minutes.
NSE pre-open matching and confirmation Approximately 09:10–09:12 Orders are matched and trades confirmed after order entry; the exact sequence is exchange-controlled.
NSE regular equity session 09:15 start Continuous trading begins after the pre-open process.
BSE special pre-open Order-entry and modification/cancellation period followed by matching; exact times depend on the exchange timetable BSE documentation describes random stoppage near the end of entry and a subsequent matching period before continuous trading. Do not substitute NSE times for BSE.
Example broker equity AMO acceptance 16:00–08:58 for NSE and BSE Zerodha documents this acceptance window for its equity AMO implementation. It is not a universal exchange deadline.
Example broker transmission 09:00 for equity market and limit AMOs Zerodha says these orders are sent at 09:00 in its implementation.
Example broker transmission for certain order types 09:15 for equity IOC, disclosed-quantity, stop-loss, and stop-loss-market AMOs This is a broker rule and can differ elsewhere.

Because pre-open entry can close randomly, an order transmitted at 09:00 is not guaranteed to enter the pre-open book before closure. If your broker sends an order at 09:15, it may target continuous trading rather than pre-open. Ask the broker how it routes AMOs that arrive at each handoff time.

Market AMO versus limit AMO

Choice Price control Likely outcome Main risk
Market AMO No maximum buy or minimum sell price Seeks available liquidity when the order reaches the market The opening or first available execution price can vary sharply from the previous close; thin liquidity can produce uneven fills.
Limit AMO Maximum price for a buy or minimum price for a sell Executes only at the limit or a better price It may remain unfilled or partially filled if the market does not reach the limit or there are insufficient counterparties.

Price-time priority still applies after an order reaches the exchange. A limit order at the same price as others may be behind earlier orders, and a market order can consume only the quantity offered by counterparties. Neither order type guarantees a complete trade.

What happens between submission and execution

Use the status labels to identify where a problem occurred:

  • AMO accepted by broker: The broker has recorded the instruction and queued it for a later handoff.
  • Sent to exchange: The broker has transmitted it at its scheduled time. Exchange validation and matching still remain.
  • Exchange accepted: The exchange has accepted the order as eligible for the relevant session. It may still wait in the book.
  • Partially filled: Only part of the requested quantity traded. The remaining quantity follows the order’s validity and exchange rules.
  • Completed: The requested quantity has traded, subject to the fills shown in the contract note or trade book.
  • Rejected or cancelled: A broker or exchange rule prevented the order from continuing, or it was withdrawn.

Check the detailed reason code rather than treating every pending order as a technical failure. “Pending” before the handoff can be normal; “rejected” after handoff requires a correction.

Why an AMO can be rejected or fail to execute

The price is outside the permitted circuit range

A limit outside the current band can be blocked when the AMO is entered. Reopen the ticket after the exchange or broker refreshes the next-session limits and use the band displayed there. Do not estimate a circuit price from an old quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The market reaches a circuit or has no counterparties

An order at an upper or lower circuit may have buyers or sellers on only one side. Even a valid limit or market AMO cannot fill without a matching counterparty. In an illiquid security, a market order can also receive only a partial fill.

Funds, holdings, or sell authorisation are insufficient

Free cash may change before the morning handoff, and a sellable holding may be locked by another order or missing the required debit authorisation. Add funds, release conflicting orders, or complete the authorisation before the broker’s transmission check. If the broker cannot verify the requirement, it may reject the AMO rather than submit it.

The instrument or order type is restricted

Broker validation can reject a security, product, or order variety that is not eligible for overnight routing. Stop-loss, IOC, disclosed-quantity, and other specialised orders often have separate transmission rules. Choose an allowed type or place the order during the live session when that order type is supported.

The order missed a broker cutoff

An AMO submitted after the broker’s acceptance window may be held for a later session, rejected immediately, or converted to a different workflow. The app’s confirmation and order-book date should reveal which happened. If the scheduled date is not the next trading day, contact the broker before assuming the order is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exchange session or symbol status changed

A holiday, special session, trading halt, surveillance action, or symbol change can alter eligibility and timing. Recheck the exchange notice and broker message; do not submit duplicate orders while the first instruction’s status is unclear.

AMO, pre-open, and post-market orders are different

These labels are sometimes used interchangeably in apps, but they describe different submission paths and price mechanisms.

Feature Overnight AMO Pre-open order Post-market delivery order
Submission window Outside regular hours, according to the broker’s AMO cutoff During the exchange’s pre-open order-entry period; NSE lists 09:00–09:10 A separate broker/exchange window after the close; Zerodha documents 15:50–16:00 for equity delivery
When it reaches the market At the broker’s scheduled handoff for the next session Directly into the pre-open process if submitted before entry closes During the post-market process on the same trading day
Price result Market price is uncertain; a limit may not fill Can participate in opening-price discovery, subject to pre-open rules and acceptance Zerodha says eligible market orders in its post-market equity-delivery window execute at the closing price
Order types and products Broker and segment dependent Exchange and broker controls apply; not every product is eligible Different restrictions apply; the documented example concerns equity delivery
Execution guarantee None None Only if an eligible order is accepted and matched under that process

The practical decision is simple: use an AMO when you want an instruction queued for the next session, use pre-open only when your broker provides that route and you understand its order-entry cutoff, and use post-market delivery when you intentionally want the separate closing-price process. Their windows and controls should not be substituted for one another.

Two examples of choosing the order correctly

Example: buying before a normal NSE session

You review the holiday calendar and find that the next day is an NSE trading day. After your broker’s live session closes, you open AMO, select the NSE symbol, choose buy and the permitted delivery product, enter the quantity, and choose a limit price inside the displayed circuit band. The broker shows “AMO accepted.” At the next handoff, the order can become exchange accepted and wait in the book. If the market opens above your limit, it can remain unfilled; if it trades at or below the limit and liquidity is available, it can fill in whole or in part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: selling on BSE with authorisation

You select BSE, verify that the shares are held and not locked by another instruction, and complete the broker’s TPIN or other delivery authorisation. You choose a limit sell within the displayed BSE band. The order is accepted into the overnight queue but is rejected in the morning because the authorisation expired. The correct response is to renew the authorisation and submit a new order only after confirming that the first order is rejected, not to place duplicates while its status is unresolved.

Morning-of-trade checklist

  • Confirm the exchange holiday or special-session notice.
  • Check that the AMO’s scheduled date is the next eligible trading day.
  • Verify the symbol, exchange, side, quantity, product, and validity.
  • Check the current circuit band and that a limit price remains inside it.
  • Ensure funds, holdings, and sell authorisation will be valid at transmission.
  • Read the broker’s order-type and AMO cutoff notice for that segment.
  • Record the order number and screenshot the AMO status.
  • After the handoff, check for exchange acceptance, rejection reason, partial fill, or completion.
  • Cancel or replace an order only after confirming its current status, so you do not create an unintended duplicate.

Bottom line

An AMO is a convenient queue for the next NSE or BSE session, not a promise of an opening price or execution. The safest workflow is to verify the trading day and broker cutoff, use a limit price when controlling price matters, confirm funds or sell authorisation, and inspect the order’s exchange status after the morning handoff.
