A strong pitch does not begin with a flashy deck. It begins by finding out whether the production company can legally and practically receive your idea, then presenting a clear story, a workable format and a specific next step. Check the company’s submission policy first; some buyers require an agent, manager or producing partner, and some accept proposals only from established production companies.
Once the route is open, prepare a one-sentence logline, a concise verbal pitch and the script or other materials the company actually requests. A television pitch must show a repeatable episode engine and season path. A film pitch must show a complete feature arc and a producible proposition. Protect your authorship, document every exchange and do not perform unpaid development work without clear terms.

1. Confirm that you can submit before you pitch
Every company has its own route. Look for a current submissions, development or commissioning page and verify the territory, format and type of sender it accepts. The relevant question is not merely “Do you like ideas?” but “Will this company accept this material from someone in my position?”
Check the sender requirement
A company may accept material only through a literary agent, manager, lawyer, director, producer or an eligible production company. BBC PiCoS, for example, says it accepts programme or film proposals from production companies and is not a route for members of the public or individuals who are not working for a production company. That kind of rule means a polished deck cannot substitute for an eligible submission route.

Verify the territory and mandate
- Confirm that the company operates in your country or the territory where you want the project produced.
- Check whether it is currently developing scripted television, unscripted programming, features, shorts or a particular genre.
- Look for stated runtime, budget, language, audience and broadcaster or platform requirements.
- Record whether the company accepts unsolicited material and whether it wants a query first.
Do not treat silence as permission
If the policy is unclear, send a short inquiry asking whether the company accepts unsolicited concepts, scripts or decks and what route it prefers. Do not attach a full screenplay or deck until the company has asked for it. A refusal to accept unsolicited submissions is a business and rights policy, not a judgment on your writing.
2. Have the right core material ready
Before requesting a meeting, finish the material that proves you can deliver the project. For a series, that normally means a polished pilot and a concise series overview. For a film, it means a finished feature screenplay, with a synopsis or treatment available if requested. An idea alone is rarely enough for a production company to assess execution, tone and production implications.
Prepare a one-sentence logline
Your logline should identify the protagonist, the goal, the central obstacle, the stakes and the distinctive world. It is the first piece of information an executive can use to decide whether to continue the conversation. Avoid a theme statement such as “It is about family.” State what happens to whom and what makes the situation difficult.

- What is the format: feature, half-hour series, hour-long series, limited series or another clearly defined form?
- What is the genre and tone?
- Who is the central character, and what do they want now?
- What is the pilot or opening movement?
- What keeps the story moving after the first episode or first act?
- Who is the intended audience?
- Why is this company a sensible fit?
These answers are not a substitute for the screenplay. They prevent a meeting from becoming a vague conversation about an undeveloped premise.
3. Build a television pitch that proves repeatability
Television buyers need to know what happens beyond the pilot. A compelling first episode is necessary, but the company also needs confidence that the premise can sustain the proposed order and, for a returning series, further seasons.

Explain the episode engine
The episode engine is the repeatable source of stories and conflict. Explain what creates a new problem each episode, what the characters do about it and what changes as a result. A workplace drama might generate cases, rivalries and ethical decisions; a mystery series might generate a new investigation while an ongoing conspiracy escalates. Name the mechanism rather than saying only that “there are many stories to tell.”
Separate the pilot from the series arc
Describe the pilot’s inciting event, objective, major turn and ending. Then explain the season arc: what the characters are trying to achieve over the order, what opposition grows, and what revelation or decision drives the finale. If the show is designed to return, describe how the engine can escalate without repeating the same plot.
Handle limited and returning series differently
- Limited series: state the planned endpoint, the number or range of episodes if known, and why the story reaches a meaningful conclusion within that structure.
- Returning series: show the durable premise, the character relationships that generate continuing conflict and the directions available after the first season.
- Anthology: explain the consistent organizing principle and what changes from story to story.
Give concrete future-episode examples
Prepare two or three brief examples that demonstrate variety within the same engine. Each example should identify the episode problem, the character pressure and the consequence, not recite a complete outline. Make clear which elements are fixed (world, format, central relationships) and which can change.

4. Build a film pitch around a complete arc and a production proposition
A feature pitch must make the whole movie legible. The listener should understand the beginning, the turning point, the climax and the ending, even if the pitch is delivered conversationally.

Cover the complete story
State the protagonist’s initial situation and desire, the event that disrupts it, the principal turning point, the choices that lead to the climax and the ending. Do not hide the ending to create artificial suspense in a business pitch; the producer is evaluating the story, not buying a theatrical mystery.
Define tone, audience and distinction
Describe the viewing experience in practical terms: intimate or expansive, comic or severe, grounded or heightened. Identify the audience you expect and explain what makes the film different from familiar work in the same genre. Comparables can clarify tone and market position, but use them as reference points rather than claims that your film will perform identically.
Explain the production hook
State the practical scale suggested by the story: contained locations, period setting, effects demands, unusual access, a distinctive setting or another element that affects how the film could be made. Do not promise a budget or production schedule you have not established. The point is to show that you understand the relationship between the creative idea and the production proposition.
5. Choose the right verbal pitch length
Your first conversation should be concise and conversational. Prepare a short version that can be delivered in roughly a minute, followed by a five-to-ten-minute expanded version for a meeting. The longer version should still leave room for questions; it is not a speech that prevents dialogue.

A practical order for the meeting
- Hook: deliver the logline and identify the format and genre.
- Premise: explain the world, protagonist and immediate problem.
- Story path: for television, cover the pilot, engine and season direction; for film, cover the complete arc and ending.
- Audience and tone: describe who it is for and how it should feel.
- Fit: explain why this company’s stated mandate, relationships or production strengths are relevant.
- Next step: ask what the executive would like to see and how to submit it.
Rehearse for clarity, not memorization
Practice saying the logline without qualifiers, then practice answering “What happens next?” and “Why this company?” Record yourself or rehearse with someone who has not read the script. Remove backstory that does not affect the decision to pursue the project. Bring a short list of facts you must not forget, but keep the delivery natural.
6. Tailor a pitch deck or treatment only when requested
A leave-behind is useful when the company asks for one. It is not automatically better than a conversation, and sending a large package without permission can create avoidable rights and administrative problems. The WGA Producers’ Guide says, “Don’t ask writers to leave behind written material, including pitch notes, outlines, or a pitch deck.” It also says that pre-contract development should be handled verbally and that a requested written pitch document may create a payment obligation under the MBA.
Possible sections for a requested deck
- Title and tagline
- Logline
- Format, runtime and genre
- Series or film synopsis
- Main characters and their relationships
- World, setting and rules
- Tone and themes
- For television: pilot summary, episode engine, season arc and sample future episodes
- For a limited series: endpoint and progression toward it
- For a feature: complete story trajectory and production scale
- Creator statement, audience or “why now” explanation
- Team biographies and relevant work
- Contact details
Use only the sections that answer the company’s request. A deck should make the project easier to evaluate, not bury the logline in design. If the company asks for a treatment, follow its requested length and format instead of sending a deck by default.
7. Understand the TV-versus-film difference
| Decision point | TV series | Film |
|---|---|---|
| Story horizon | A repeatable episode engine plus a season arc; returning shows also need escalation potential. | One complete feature arc with a satisfying ending. |
| Format | Episode length, season order and whether the structure is returning, limited or anthology. | Feature runtime and a contained or expansive structure. |
| Core materials | Pilot plus series overview and episode or season plan. | Feature screenplay plus synopsis or treatment if requested. |
| Buyer fit | Commissioning or development mandate, audience strategy and the company’s ability to produce the format. | Genre, audience, budget scale and practical feasibility. |
| Rights and attachments | Underlying IP, producer, director, cast and exclusivity status should be clear. | The same rights and attachment questions apply, with the complete screenplay at the center. |
Do not pitch a film as though it were a pilot, or a series as though one strong premise automatically creates multiple episodes. The buyer is assessing a format as well as a story.

8. Ask the questions that protect your opportunity
A pitch is also a due-diligence conversation. The WGA Project Page fields provide useful prompts for evaluating an assignment or opportunity:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- How many writers are competing or being considered?
- How long has the project been in development?
- Is a director or actor attached?
- Are the underlying intellectual-property rights secured?
- Who controls the next decision and what is the expected timeline?
Ask these questions politely and record the answers. They reveal whether you are presenting an original project, joining an existing development process or being asked to compete for work under conditions you did not understand.
9. Protect authorship and keep a paper trail
Keep dated copies of loglines, drafts, decks, emails and meeting notes. Save the version you submitted and the exact date and recipient. If the company requests revisions, summarize the request in an email so both sides share the same understanding.
The WGA Screenwriters Handbook states: “Any work a writer does to prepare a pitch or take a meeting is the sole property of the writer.” That principle supports keeping your own records; it does not replace a written agreement when rights, compensation or exclusivity are involved.

- Ownership: identify what rights, if any, the company is requesting and when they would transfer.
- Confidentiality: ask how the material will be handled and whether circulation is limited.
- Exclusivity: confirm whether you may take the project elsewhere and for how long.
- Payment: get compensation and deliverables in writing before doing requested development work.
- Credits and attachments: clarify expectations rather than assuming they are guaranteed.
If a company wants a written pitch document or substantial revisions before a contract, pause and ask how that work is being commissioned. A request for upfront fees, paid access or mandatory services is a reason to stop and verify the offer independently; the official guidance consulted does not endorse those practices.
10. Send the right follow-up
End the meeting with a concrete question: Does the company want the pilot, screenplay, treatment or deck? Does it want a meeting with a producer? Does it want permission to circulate the project internally? Confirm the answer in writing.
Confirm the submission details
- Restate the exact material requested.
- Confirm the file type, delivery method and deadline.
- Ask whether the submission is exclusive and, if so, for what period.
- Record who may read or circulate it.
- Ask when and how the company expects to respond.
Send only the agreed material. Use a clear file name and include your contact details inside the document. Keep your own copy and the confirmation email.
11. A complete preparation checklist
- Company route and territory verified.
- Unsolicited-submission policy confirmed.
- Representative or producing partner requirement understood.
- Pilot or feature screenplay polished and available.
- One-sentence logline tested for protagonist, goal, obstacle, stakes and distinctive world.
- Five-to-ten-minute expanded pitch rehearsed.
- TV episode engine, season arc and future-episode examples prepared.
- Film beginning, turning point, climax, ending, tone, audience and production hook prepared.
- Requested deck or treatment tailored to the company’s instructions.
- Rights, attachments, exclusivity and development status documented.
- Ownership and payment terms clarified before additional work.
- Next material, deadline and response expectations confirmed in writing.
12. Optional craft preparation
If you want a broader writing reference while preparing, Michael Hauge’s Writing Screenplays That Sell (Bloomsbury, 2011 edition; paperback, 384 pages; ISBN 9781408151464) covers story concept, character, structure, scenes, submission, agent selection and marketing. It is a craft resource, not access to a production company and not a guarantee of a sale.
