To permanently redact a PDF, use a redaction tool to mark the sensitive text or images, apply the redactions, sanitize hidden information when needed, and save the result. Drawing a black box over text only hides it visually; it does not follow the documented redaction process. The steps below use Adobe Acrobat Pro’s current desktop workflow. Menu names may differ in other PDF apps or releases.
What permanent PDF redaction does—and does not do
Applying and saving a redaction removes the selected visible content from the document. Adobe distinguishes this from placing a visual overlay on top of content that remains intact. Redacting visible text and images is also distinct from sanitizing hidden information, which may need a separate step. Adobe explains the distinction between redacting and sanitizing PDFs.

Hidden information that may require attention includes metadata, attachments, scripts, hidden layers, embedded search indexes, stored form data, comments and annotations, data from previous saves, links, actions, JavaScript, and overlapping objects. These are possible elements—not items present in every PDF. Sanitization can remove document information or features you intended to keep, so consider the contents before proceeding. Adobe’s hidden-content guidance lists examples.

- A complete office suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, note taking, eBook publishing, and more
- Easily open, edit, and share files with extensive support for 60 formats, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Includes the Oxford Concise Dictionary, which contains tens of thousands of definitions, phrases, phonetic spellings, scientific and specialist words

- 900 TrueType fonts, 10,000 clipart images, 300 templates, and 175 digital photos
- Start from a copy. Preserve the unredacted original in an appropriately controlled location. Work on a separate copy so you can correct mistakes without relying on a redacted version.
- Open the redaction tool. Choose All tools > Redact a PDF, then select Redact text and images.
- Mark the content. Select the text or image to remove. Check the full page and nearby content so you mark the intended material, not just an isolated portion of it.
- Apply the marks. Select Apply to finalize the marked redactions. Marking alone is not the completed removal step.
- Consider hidden information. If prompted, choose to sanitize and remove hidden information when appropriate, then continue. Review potential consequences for metadata and document features before choosing this option.
- Save the result separately. Save the redacted, sanitized result under a new filename and inspect that saved copy before sharing it.
Find repeated words or phrases before applying redactions
For searchable text, Acrobat Pro offers Find text and redact. It can search for one word or phrase, multiple words or phrases, and supported patterns. Review the returned matches and select the occurrences you want redacted before marking or applying them; a search result is not itself a redaction. Adobe documents the search-and-redact workflow.
Search is a useful way to locate repeated identifiers, but do not treat it as a guarantee that every occurrence has been found. Search instructions do not establish that text search will detect all sensitive information in every PDF.

Take extra care with scans and image-only PDFs
Text search may not find information that appears only as pixels in a scanned or image-only page. Adobe’s instructions document searching for words and patterns, and separately allow redacting images; they do not establish that search detects every occurrence in every scan. Inspect each rendered page and include image content in your review. When an identifier appears more than once, look at all likely pages rather than relying only on search results.

- Confirm the intended text and images were marked and the redactions were applied.
- For PDFs with searchable text, search again for known names, numbers, or phrases and review any matches. Treat this as an aid, not a guarantee.
- Sanitize hidden information when it may contain private content, while accounting for metadata or other features the cleanup may remove.
- Open and visually inspect the saved output, especially dense pages, pages containing images, and pages with repeated identifiers.
Adobe documents the apply-and-save workflow, but its reviewed guidance does not claim that visual inspection alone proves all hidden information has been removed. Inspection is a practical final check, not proof that every possible data remnant is gone.

Why a black rectangle is not enough
An ordinary shape or overlay can cover text on screen while leaving the underlying content intact. Use a PDF redaction tool and apply the marks instead of relying on a drawn shape, highlight, or other visual cover. Then address hidden information separately if it may contain private data.
