What makes iStat Menus worth choosing?
More depth for sensors and fans
iStat Menus is the stronger fit if you want more than headline CPU or memory readings. Bjango lists temperatures, fans, CPU frequency, supported GPU frequency, voltage, current and power in its Sensors section, with some readings dependent on hardware support. It also offers fan control, including automatic switching or ramping based on temperature and battery state.

That level of control is useful when you deliberately want to monitor thermal behavior or manage fan response. It is not a reason to install fan-control software if you only need an occasional look at running processes.

What does Stats offer as an open-source alternative?
Broad coverage without a license fee
Stats is a free macOS menu bar monitor released under the MIT License. Its documented modules cover CPU, GPU, RAM, disk, sensors, network, battery, Bluetooth and clock. The project website lists 13 widget styles and support for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Its stated requirement is macOS 12 or later.
For everyday questions—whether CPU use is high, how much memory is in use, or whether network activity is ongoing—those modules may be enough. Stats is a reasonable choice when source availability and avoiding a paid app matter more than features such as fan control or weather.

Open source does not mean no network requests
The Stats repository documents requests to the project’s API for update checks and public-IP retrieval, with GitHub as an update-check fallback. It says the app does not collect telemetry or analytics. Those statements describe the project’s documented behavior; they do not mean the app makes no network requests.
Modules have different resource costs
The Stats maintainer cautions that modules vary in resource use and identifies Sensors and Bluetooth as particularly inefficient in some cases. If you do not need a module, switch it off in Stats’ settings and observe whether that better suits your Mac. The repository does not provide a controlled comparison against iStat Menus, so there is no supported percentage or ranking for CPU use or battery impact.
The project also notes that Apple Silicon sensor labels indicate sensor locations and do not necessarily correspond to individual CPU cores. Treat those labels as locations, not as a per-core map.

Choose iStat Menus if you need controls or detail
- You want fan control or temperature-based fan switching and ramping.
- You need a wide range of sensor readings, including supported frequency, voltage, current or power data.
- You want weather in the menu bar or extensive control over how indicators are displayed.
- You are comfortable evaluating a paid product; use the 14-day trial on the Mac you intend to monitor.
Choose Stats if its metrics are enough
- You want a free, MIT-licensed menu bar monitor.
- Its documented CPU, GPU, memory, disk, sensor, network, battery, Bluetooth and clock modules cover what you actually check.
- You are comfortable reviewing its network disclosures and disabling modules you do not use.
- Your Mac runs macOS 12 or later.
Choose Activity Monitor for occasional inspection
If you only need to identify a process that is using CPU or memory, Apple’s built-in Activity Monitor is an option that requires no additional monitor app. It is for one-off investigation rather than persistent menu bar indicators; it is not a like-for-like replacement for either app’s glanceable readings.

Check compatibility and fix a missing Stats menu bar icon
Confirm the minimum macOS version
As listed on the vendors’ pages at the time of writing, iStat Menus 7.5 requires macOS 11 or later, while Stats requires macOS 12 or later. Requirements can change with new releases, so check the linked product page before installing.
Allow Stats in the macOS 26 menu bar
The Stats repository notes a release-specific issue on macOS 26: you may need to explicitly allow the app’s icons to appear in the menu bar. Check System Settings → Menu Bar and allow Stats there if its icon is missing. This note concerns macOS 26 and should not be assumed to apply to other releases.
Bottom line
For sensor depth, fan control, weather and extensive customization, start with iStat Menus and test it during the trial. For a no-cost, open-source monitor that covers common metrics, try Stats, confirm compatibility and turn off modules you do not need. Neither choice is supported by a published head-to-head performance benchmark.
