First, check which keyboard is active
The steps below are for Gboard. If its settings do not match what you see, confirm the active keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language-and-input settings, then use that keyboard’s own instructions. Menu names vary across manufacturers and Android versions, and the documented Gboard paths are not universal to every keyboard.

On some Android devices, Gboard is already the default keyboard. Google’s setup instructions also describe opening its settings through Android Settings: Settings → System → Languages & input → Virtual keyboard → Gboard. The labels or route may differ on a customized device. Google’s Gboard setup instructions cover this route.

- Open an app where you can type and tap a text field to bring up Gboard.
- Tap the feature menu at the top of the keyboard.
- Tap More → Settings → Text correction.
- Choose the correction and suggestion options shown on your device. The available controls can include different kinds of suggestions, such as next-word or emoji suggestions.
Google identifies Text correction as the place to manage correction and suggestion behavior; see Get word suggestions and fix mistakes.

If autocorrect changes a word you meant to keep
Tap Backspace to undo an automatic correction. If Gboard marks a correctly spelled word as misspelled, you can add that word to your dictionary using Google’s instructions on the same word suggestions and mistakes help page.
Turn keyboard haptics or vibration on or off
- Open Gboard’s settings, either from the keyboard’s feature menu or through your device’s virtual keyboard settings.
- Tap Preferences.
- Look under the keypress options for Haptic feedback on keypress and, where available, Vibration strength on keypress. Change the controls to your preference.
Google documents these options in Change your keyboard theme, sound, or vibration. If Gboard’s vibration option is enabled but keypresses do not vibrate, check the Android device’s vibration settings: Google says device vibration being turned off overrides Gboard’s vibration setting.

Gboard proofread is a separate feature
Proofread is not the same setting as ordinary autocorrect or word suggestions. Google’s help page lists Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, English, and the United States as eligibility requirements for proofread with Gboard. Those limits apply to that feature, not to Gboard’s general correction controls. See About proofread with Gboard.
