How to pay with a digital wallet online
- Look for the wallet at checkout. Choose Apple Pay or Google Pay if the merchant displays it. A wallet is not a universal checkout option: the merchant must support it, and the wallet must accept your selected payment method. Apple’s purchase instructions and Google Pay’s app and website instructions describe their respective flows.
- Review the payment and order details. Select the card or other saved payment method you want to use. Check the billing, shipping, and contact details before proceeding. Google’s checkout flow may ask you to select a saved payment method and shipping address.
- Authenticate or confirm. Follow the prompt shown on your device. Apple’s supported-device flow can use Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode; the exact prompt depends on your device and setup.
- Keep the order confirmation. Save the merchant’s confirmation and order details in case you need help with delivery, a return, or a refund.
What to check if a wallet or card is unavailable
If the wallet button is missing, the merchant may not accept that wallet for the purchase. If the wallet appears but your card does not, eligibility may depend on the card issuer, card network, wallet, and region. Check the wallet and ask your issuer whether the card is supported; do not assume that a card saved in one wallet is eligible everywhere. Google’s availability information notes that features vary by country or region.

Device and browser support can also affect the options you see. For Apple Pay on a supported third-party browser or website, Apple documents a cross-device flow: select Apple Pay on the browsing device, scan the code with an iPhone or iPad, review the payment details there, and authenticate on that Apple device. This is limited to supported websites and regions, so it is not a guarantee for every browser or device combination. Apple’s cross-device instructions explain the conditions.

Apple says that with Apple Pay, your actual card number is not shared with merchants and each transaction uses a unique security code. That describes Apple Pay’s payment-data handling; it does not mean every payment risk is eliminated. Apple’s security explanation provides further detail.

Some eligible Google Pay users may be able to use a virtual card number for certain online or in-app payments. It replaces the actual card number shared with the merchant, but availability is limited to select banks, networks, and regions, and some merchants opt out. A virtual number is not automatically provided for every card saved in Google Wallet. See Google’s virtual card information.
Who to contact about an order, refund, or charge
For delivery, returns, or a refund, contact the merchant that fulfilled the order. Google says it does not hold or process funds for Google Pay purchases; the transaction is between the merchant and the institution that issued your payment method. Google does not initiate or track refunds or manage disputes or chargebacks. If an incorrect charge remains unresolved and money has left your account, contact your card issuer to ask about its dispute or chargeback process. Google Pay’s refund and dispute guidance explains these responsibilities.

Preauthorized Apple Pay payments and subscriptions
For an Apple Pay preauthorized payment, revoking the payment authorization stops that authorization but does not cancel the service. Contact the merchant separately to end the subscription or service. Apple’s instructions for managing preauthorized payments describe the distinction.
Choosing between wallet buttons
If checkout offers more than one wallet, compare the practical details rather than assuming one is universally safer or more widely accepted. Check whether the merchant accepts it, whether your card and region are eligible, what device or authentication it requires, what card-data protections the provider documents, and who handles order issues. Those answers can differ by card, merchant, device, and location.
