To pay a person for a purchase on Venmo, create the payment through Pay/Request, enter the agreed amount and an accurate note, tap Pay, then turn on the purchase toggle on the next screen if Venmo offers it. The toggle is not available for every payment. For a business, use its authorized Venmo business profile or the merchant’s supported Venmo checkout instead. A regular personal transfer should not be assumed to include Purchase Protection.
Tag a payment to a personal profile as a purchase
Use this flow when paying an individual seller and Venmo presents the purchase option. The app’s screens can vary by account, platform, and feature availability, so follow the labels shown in your current app.

- Open Venmo and tap Pay/Request.
- Choose the seller’s personal profile. Check the recipient carefully before continuing.
- Enter the agreed amount and a note that accurately describes the item or service.
- Tap Pay.
- On the next screen, look below the payment method for the purchase toggle. Turn it on if the transaction is genuinely a purchase and Venmo offers the option.
- Review the recipient, amount, note, and purchase designation, then submit the payment. Keep the listing, agreement, and relevant messages.
Venmo says not every payment is eligible or will show the toggle. Make the purchase designation before sending: you cannot untag or recategorize a payment after identifying it as a purchase, and an ordinary personal transfer should not be treated as a protected purchase. See Venmo’s instructions for buying from personal profiles and its User Agreement for applicable terms.
Pay a business through a supported route
When a seller has an authorized Venmo business profile, you can pay that profile. Other supported routes include a Venmo Debit Card at merchants that accept it, Venmo checkout on approved mobile sites or apps, and in-store Venmo QR codes at select merchants. Availability depends on the merchant and payment method. Use the option presented by the merchant, and review the transaction details before confirming. Venmo describes these options in its Buying and Selling on Venmo guidance.

What Purchase Protection does—and does not—promise
Venmo says eligible purchases may be covered in situations such as an item not arriving, arriving damaged, or differing materially from its description. Coverage depends on the transaction meeting the applicable eligibility requirements and using the designated purchase flow. Venmo investigates eligible disputes; protection is not an automatic refund or a guarantee that a claim will succeed.
If you tagged a personal-profile purchase and the seller does not fulfill the agreement, open the transaction in the app and go to Me > transaction > Need Help? Follow the prompts and provide relevant details. Check Venmo’s Purchase Protection terms for current eligibility and dispute conditions.

Who pays the fee?
For a personal-profile payment intentionally tagged as a purchase, Venmo says the recipient pays a fee deducted from the amount received. Its Buying and Selling FAQ uses a $100 payment as an example in which the seller receives $98; that example is not a universal quote for every current transaction.
Venmo lists separate fees for business profiles: 1.9% + $0.10 for direct payments and 2.29% + $0.10 for Tap to Pay. These are business-profile rates, not a rate to apply to every personal-profile purchase. Check the current Venmo fees page and the transaction details for the payment type you are using.

Recognize risky requests and verify payment status
- Be cautious if a seller asks you not to mark a personal-profile payment as a purchase. Venmo advises buying from strangers only through an approved business account or by marking a personal-profile payment as a purchase when the option is available. Read its Common Scams guidance.
- Check the payment’s status in the Venmo app. Do not rely on a screenshot or an email supplied by the other party as proof that money was sent.
- Confirm the recipient and details before submitting. Venmo says completed payments generally cannot be canceled. If an eligible tagged purchase goes wrong, use the in-app dispute flow and contact Venmo Support as appropriate. See Venmo’s cancellation guidance.
