For a failed debit, NPCI says the money should be reversed. If the refund has not arrived within one hour, contact your bank. A pending payment can reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after settlement, so wait for confirmation before sending another payment.

Start with the transaction status
Open your UPI app and go to Transaction history, Activity or the equivalent label. Open the exact payment and record the transaction ID or 12-digit RRN, amount, date and payee. The status determines what you should do next; the same “payment did not go through” message can represent very different situations.

- Failed or Declined, with no debit: identify and correct the likely cause, then retry once.
- Failed or Declined, but your account was debited: do not retry immediately; wait for the reversal and contact your bank if it does not arrive within one hour.
- Pending or status unknown: do not make a second payment. Wait for the final result and monitor the beneficiary account or merchant order.
Take a screenshot of the status and keep the RRN before troubleshooting. A merchant or bank can use those details to trace the payment.

What “failed,” “declined,” “pending” and “unknown” mean
Failed or declined
A failed or declined transaction has received a rejection rather than a completed confirmation. NPCI separates declines into two broad groups. Business declines include an invalid UPI-PIN, invalid beneficiary details and an exceeded transaction limit. Technical declines result from a bank, NPCI or network problem. The app may show only “Failed” even when the underlying reason is technical.
NPCI’s UPI Help flow describes the sequence as “Payment Initiated → Payment Failed → Kindly Try Again.” That instruction applies when the account was not debited and the payment is no longer pending. Confirm the debit status before following it.
Pending
A pending payment means the initiating bank has not received final confirmation from the beneficiary bank. NPCI’s FAQ explains that the amount may already have been debited and can reach the recipient within 48 hours after settlement. It is not a safe signal to send the payment again.
Status unknown
“Unknown,” “processing” or a screen that timed out without a final result should be treated like pending until the transaction history, bank account and beneficiary confirm otherwise. A lost connection can hide a successful debit; closing the app does not cancel the transaction.

If the payment failed and no money was debited
Correct the likely input or account problem, then make one carefully checked retry. Do not keep tapping Pay: repeated attempts can create multiple payments if an earlier request completes late.
Check the UPI-PIN
Enter the PIN for the bank account selected for this payment, not a card PIN or the PIN for a different account. A wrong PIN causes a failure. Depending on the bank, repeated incorrect attempts may temporarily block UPI, so stop after a rejected attempt if you are unsure and use the bank’s recovery or PIN-reset process.
Verify the recipient
- Match the displayed recipient name with the person or merchant you intend to pay.
- Check the complete UPI ID (VPA), mobile number, account number and IFSC, or the QR code before confirming.
- For a saved beneficiary, open the payment details again rather than assuming the stored entry is current.
An invalid beneficiary is a business decline. A payment to a valid but wrong recipient is different: it may complete successfully and requires an urgent bank complaint rather than a retry.

Check balance and limits
Confirm that the selected account has enough available funds, including any bank hold or minimum-balance requirement. NPCI’s FAQ states that the normal UPI limit is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction; special categories can have different limits. Your bank or app may impose a lower daily, per-transaction or newly-added-beneficiary limit, so check the current limit shown by that bank before retrying.

Rule out a temporary technical decline
If the PIN, recipient and balance are correct, a bank, NPCI or network outage may be responsible. Wait briefly for the app to return to a final Failed status, then retry once. Switch between a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection if appropriate, but do not start a second payment while the first request is still marked pending or unknown.
If money was debited but the payment failed
Do not immediately pay again. NPCI states that UPI provides real-time reversals for declines and that a failed payment should be refunded to your account. The reversal can be separate from the app’s failure message, so check the bank account or statement as well as the UPI app.
- Open the failed transaction and save the RRN, amount, date, payee and debit confirmation.
- Check the account statement for a reversal or credit, not just the UPI app’s balance display.
- Wait up to one hour for the refund. NPCI’s FAQ advises contacting your bank if it has not arrived within that hour.
- Use the transaction’s Report issue, Help or UPI Help route to create a complaint, and provide the RRN and debit evidence.
Tell the merchant that the payment is under bank reconciliation and give the transaction reference instead of making an untracked second payment. If the merchant later confirms no credit and your bank confirms no reversal, follow up on the existing complaint rather than opening several conflicting cases.
If the payment is pending or has no final status
Keep the transaction open in history and wait for a final success or failure message. NPCI documents that a delayed beneficiary-bank confirmation can leave a transaction pending and that the amount may reach the recipient within 48 hours after settlement.

- Ask the recipient or merchant to check incoming transactions using the same amount and reference, not just an SMS.
- Do not cancel, duplicate or reverse the payment from a second app unless your bank explicitly instructs you to do so.
- If the status remains unresolved after the bank’s stated settlement window, raise a complaint from the transaction record with the RRN.
A pending debit that later succeeds can become a duplicate if you pay by another method too soon. If the purchase is time-critical, ask the merchant whether they can hold the order while the first transaction is reconciled.
How to pay another way when UPI is unavailable
Ask the merchant which non-UPI method they accept before choosing a fallback. Acceptance, speed and dispute rules are controlled by the merchant, payment provider and issuing bank; no alternative is guaranteed at every checkout.
| Fallback | What you need | Account source | Confirmation speed | Fees or limits | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Card payment | A physical or virtual debit/credit card and, where required, one-time verification | Debit card draws from its linked bank account; credit card uses the issuer’s credit line | Usually immediate authorization, subject to the issuer and merchant terminal or gateway | Merchant, card network and issuer rules apply; no universal fee or limit is established here | Refunds normally return through the card payment route and can take longer than authorization |
| Bank transfer using account number and IFSC | Recipient account number, IFSC and the bank’s transfer interface | Directly from your selected bank account | Depends on the transfer rail, bank processing and beneficiary confirmation | Bank-specific charges and limits; check before sending | Recheck every digit because a wrong account can be difficult to recover |
| Cash | Physical currency and a merchant willing to accept it | Not drawn electronically from your account | Immediate handover and receipt | No electronic processing fee, but cash availability and merchant policy limit use | No automatic digital dispute trail; obtain a written or printed receipt |
| Another authorised wallet or payment method | An eligible account, balance or linked funding source and merchant acceptance | Wallet balance or linked bank/card, depending on the service | Usually immediate app confirmation, subject to service availability | Provider-specific limits, eligibility and fees | Refunds and complaints follow that provider’s rules, not the failed UPI transaction’s workflow |
Account-number-plus-IFSC transfer is an officially documented UPI transfer channel, but it is still a separate payment instruction from the failed UPI attempt. Confirm whether the merchant wants a bank transfer reference and whether it can match that reference to your order.
Do UPI Lite, Tap & Pay or another UPI app bypass a bank decline?
No. NPCI presents UPI Lite, Tap & Pay and other app experiences as UPI features with their own eligibility and limits. They do not guarantee a workaround for a bank-side decline, an incorrect PIN, an insufficient balance or an outage affecting the relevant bank or network. Use them only when the feature is available for your account and the merchant accepts it, and still check the final status before attempting another payment.

Report and track the problem from the transaction record
The most reliable complaint starts with the exact transaction rather than a general support chat.
- Open Transaction history in the app and select the failed, pending or disputed payment.
- Choose Report issue, Help, UPI Help or the equivalent current label.
- Select the closest reason, such as payment failed, amount debited but recipient not credited, merchant issue or transaction pending.
- Submit the RRN or transaction ID, bank name, date, amount, payee details and a concise description of what happened.
- Save the complaint or ticket number and use the same case to provide later evidence and check progress.
NPCI’s UPI Help pilot covers incomplete transactions and merchant-service issues. Its complaint process asks for the bank, date, amount, 12-digit RRN and account details. App labels and rollout can change, so follow the current path displayed in your app.
When to contact the bank directly
Contact the bank that holds the debited account when a failed debit has not been reversed within one hour, when a pending payment remains unresolved after the applicable settlement window, or when the app cannot create a complaint. Give the bank the RRN and ask it to trace the transaction and confirm whether a reversal or beneficiary credit is pending.

Common causes and the right response
| What you see | Likely category | What to check | Safe next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Invalid PIN” or repeated PIN rejection | Business decline | Correct account PIN; whether the bank has temporarily blocked attempts | Stop guessing, recover or reset the PIN through the bank, then retry only after the original status is Failed and no debit occurred |
| “Invalid beneficiary” or recipient mismatch | Business decline | VPA, mobile number, account number, IFSC and displayed name | Correct the recipient details and make one new payment instruction |
| “Limit exceeded” | Business decline | Bank and NPCI limits, daily usage and special-category rules | Use an allowed amount or an alternative rail accepted by the merchant |
| Network or bank error | Technical decline | Connection and whether the bank service is responding | Wait for a final status; retry once only if no debit occurred |
| Debit shown, recipient not credited | Reversal or delayed settlement issue | Bank statement, RRN and elapsed time | Do not duplicate; wait for reversal guidance and raise a bank complaint |
| Pending or processing | Delayed confirmation | Recipient account and transaction history | Wait for confirmation; escalate if it remains unresolved after the applicable window |
Limits, channels and details worth checking before a retry
UPI can be initiated through a VPA, mobile number, account number plus IFSC or a QR scan. BHIM supports these channels and allows users to report declined transactions from transaction history. A QR code is only a way to supply payment details; it does not remove account, beneficiary, PIN, balance or network checks.
NPCI’s normal limit is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, according to its FAQ accessed in 2026. NPCI also identifies higher limits for special categories. Because banks can apply their own lower limits and policies, verify the current amount limit in the bank or app immediately before a large payment. A limit shown in one app may not apply to another bank account.
How to avoid a second payment and preserve evidence
- Use one app and one transaction record as the reference for the incident.
- Save the RRN, exact amount, timestamp, recipient name or merchant order number and screenshots.
- Tell the recipient whether the status is Failed, Pending or unknown; “not received” alone does not prove failure.
- Never disclose the UPI-PIN, one-time password or screen-sharing access while seeking support.
- When using a fallback method, obtain its separate confirmation and receipt so the merchant can distinguish it from the original UPI attempt.
Decision tree for a time-sensitive payment
- Open history and check the debit. If the status is Pending or unknown, wait and do not duplicate.
- If Failed/Declined with no debit, check PIN, beneficiary, balance and limits, then retry once.
- If Failed/Declined with a debit, wait for the reversal; contact the bank if no refund appears within one hour.
- If the merchant cannot wait, ask whether it accepts card, cash, account-number-plus-IFSC transfer or another authorised method, and record the new payment separately.
- For any unresolved or unauthorised transaction, report it from the transaction record and contact the account-holding bank with the RRN.
This sequence prevents the two most expensive mistakes: sending a duplicate while the first payment is still being settled, and repeatedly entering a wrong PIN until UPI access is temporarily blocked.
