How to Pay by UPI Safely and Confirm a Payment Went Through

Verify the recipient and amount before authorizing a UPI payment. Learn what successful, pending and failed statuses mean—and what to do if money was debited or the payment went to the wrong person.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you enter your UPI PIN, check that the payment app shows the right recipient and amount. After authorizing, confirm the result in the transaction details: a payment is successful only when your account is debited and the recipient’s account is credited. If the status is pending, the payment is not yet confirmed—check its record and follow the app or bank’s instructions before trying again.

How to make a UPI payment safely

  1. Open a participating UPI app and choose the payment method the app supports, such as a UPI ID, account details or QR code. These are among the payment routes described on NPCI’s BHIM product page.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  2. Check the recipient identity and amount shown on the payment screen. For a QR payment, scanning is not confirmation: inspect the details the app displays before you authorize the transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Enter your UPI PIN only to approve a payment you intend to make. The PIN authorizes bank transactions; do not share it with a merchant, caller or anyone claiming they need it to release money. NPCI warns users not to share it, and says bank customer support will never ask for it in its UPI FAQ.

What each UPI payment status means

Status What it tells you What to do
Successful Your account was debited and the receiver’s account was credited, according to NPCI’s UPI Help Guidelines. Check the transaction details and reference. If the recipient or merchant cannot see the payment, verify the payee information and share the reference through an appropriate support channel before considering another payment.
Pending The payment is stuck at the payer or receiver side and confirmation has not arrived. It is not confirmed as successful. Check transaction history and use the reference to follow up through the app or bank. Do not pay again until you have checked the first transaction’s status.
Failed The transaction did not complete, commonly because of a technical issue. If your account was debited, a return of the money may follow. Check for a reversal and report the transaction in the app or to your bank if the money has not returned.

“It says successful, but the recipient hasn’t received anything”

First check the app’s transaction record, including the recipient details and transaction reference. A delayed bank SMS or merchant notification does not by itself change the recorded status; notification delivery can be affected by bank or mobile-operator delays. BHIM’s FAQ advises checking the entered UPI ID or account details if the app shows success but the beneficiary says the funds have not arrived. Do not immediately pay a second time, since that could create a duplicate transfer. If the record and recipient’s information still conflict, raise the issue through the payment app or bank.

“My payment is pending after a debit. What should I do?”

A debit alone does not prove the receiver has been credited. NPCI’s UPI FAQ gives a 48-hour guidance window for a pending debit-without-credit case, tied to completion of the beneficiary bank’s daily settlements; this is FAQ guidance, not a universal guarantee. BHIM’s FAQ separately tells users to check a pending transaction after T+2 working days and describes a T+3-day reversal expectation for a reported pending issue. These timings come from different guidance and should not be treated as one deadline for every app or bank. Follow the current status and instructions shown by your own app or bank.

If the status remains unresolved, select the transaction in history, note its reference and raise an in-app issue or contact your bank. NPCI’s FAQ also advises contacting bank support if confirmation has not arrived within an hour in specified cases; use that advice in the context of the particular case and your bank’s current process.

“It failed after my account was debited”

NPCI says money debited for a failed transaction is returned, and advises contacting the bank if the reversal does not happen immediately. Its FAQ also says to contact bank support if a refund has not arrived within an hour in specified cases. BHIM’s FAQ says to report a failed transaction in the app and gives a T+3-day reversal expectation. These are attributed operational guidance, not a guaranteed service level across all banks and UPI apps. Keep the transaction reference and follow the status in your app; if the reversal does not appear, raise the issue with the app or bank.

Wrong recipient or payment you did not authorize

NPCI says an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. BHIM says a successful wrong-recipient transaction cannot be reversed unless the recipient refunds it, so recovery is not assured. Contact the app and bank promptly, retain the transaction reference and complaint number, and do not assume the money will automatically be returned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorised transaction, NPCI directs customers to raise the complaint with their bank. RBI guidance says customer liability depends on circumstances, including the cause and when the transaction is reported; the cited RBI page is older, so the applicable current directions and your specific facts matter. Do not assume reimbursement is automatic.
