You can connect an original Nintendo 64 directly to a TV with compatible composite inputs. If your TV has HDMI but no analog AV inputs, use an active converter or retro gaming scaler that accepts the N64’s composite or supported S-Video signal and outputs HDMI. The N64 itself does not output HDMI.
Check which inputs your TV has
Look on the back or side of the TV for yellow composite video and red/white stereo audio inputs. If they are present, start with the N64’s composite AV lead: match each plug to the corresponding input, then select that AV input on the TV.

Input layouts vary by television. Some newer TVs omit analog jacks, and some use a proprietary adapter for analog AV. Check the TV’s manual if the connections are not clearly labeled. If it has no compatible composite input, you will need an active analog-to-HDMI converter or scaler.
Connect the N64 to the TV
TV with composite inputs
- Connect the N64 AV lead’s yellow video plug to the TV’s yellow composite video input.
- Connect the red and white audio plugs to the matching audio inputs.
- Turn on the console and TV, then select the TV’s corresponding AV input.
If your TV accepts composite video but has a different audio arrangement, consult its documentation before adapting the audio connections.

HDMI-only TV
- Connect the N64’s composite video and audio plugs—or an appropriate S-Video connection—to the converter or scaler’s matching analog inputs.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Power the converter as its manufacturer specifies, then select that HDMI input on the TV.
A passive RCA-to-HDMI cable is not a substitute for an active converter: the device must accept analog video and convert it to a digital HDMI signal. For example, RetroTINK’s 2X MINI takes composite or S-Video input, outputs HDMI and uses micro-USB power; its documentation specifies a 5V/1A supply. See the 2X MINI setup and specifications.
Choose composite or S-Video
Composite is the straightforward baseline: the yellow lead carries video, while red and white carry stereo audio. S-Video separates the video signal and is a useful alternative when the N64, cable and converter all support it. RetroTINK recommends S-Video for its 2X MINI, but compatibility depends on the console’s region and model.

Do not assume every N64 supports S-Video. RetroTINK says its bundled SNES/N64 S-Video cable is for NTSC and compatible PAL consoles, and notes that not all PAL systems support S-Video. Its 2X Pro documentation likewise says its optional N64/SNES S-Video cable works with NTSC consoles; PAL systems need a special cable and must support S-Video output. Check the cable and console compatibility details before buying.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRF is a legacy option when the setup uses an appropriate RF modulator or switch and the display equipment supports it. Compatibility and wiring depend on the regional hardware, so consult the relevant console and modulator manuals rather than treating RF as a universal plug-in option.

Pick a converter or scaler that fits your setup
Check that the device accepts the exact signal you plan to use, passes audio, outputs a format your TV accepts, and handles the N64’s video modes. A basic converter may be enough for one console; a more capable scaler can make sense if you also use other retro systems or want more control over image processing.

Know what to expect from 240p and 480i
The N64 produces standard-definition analog video. A scaler converts that signal for an HDMI television and may change how it is scaled or processed; it cannot restore native image detail that was not present in the source.
Most N64 games output 240p, but some Expansion Pak games use 480i. ConsoleMods notes that a change between these modes can expose resolution-switching issues on some scalers and affect scanline appearance. Interlaced video can also flicker when a device uses Bob deinterlacing. RetroTINK says the 2X Pro supports Bob deinterlacing and may flicker with 480i sources; its page recommends a 5X or 4K for 480i content. That is the manufacturer’s guidance, not a guarantee that one device will behave identically with every game and display.

If a game loses sync, flickers or displays differently after a resolution change, check the scaler’s compatibility notes and settings, try another supported input such as composite instead of S-Video if appropriate, and verify that the device’s output mode is accepted by the TV. For a purchase, review the seller’s return terms in case your particular combination of console, game and TV behaves differently.
