Start a two-player co-op game
- Start Kirby and the Forgotten Land and select a save file.
- Choose Play Co-op from the menu flow. You can also pause while playing a stage and choose Play Co-op there.
- Set up the second player’s controller input. Nintendo’s instructions describe passing a Joy-Con to a friend.
- Player 1 plays as Kirby; Player 2 joins as Bandana Waddle Dee.
Nintendo describes the game as supporting one to two players on a single system. The exact controller setup can depend on your console and available controllers.

What Player 2 can do
Kirby can float and inhale enemies. Bandana Waddle Dee uses a spear, giving the second player a different role in combat. The camera follows Kirby while keeping Bandana Waddle Dee visible, so co-op uses a shared screen rather than split-screen. Nintendo developer Kamiyama explained: “The screen will always show both players to ensure a smooth co-op experience.”

Can Player 2 join after a stage starts?
Yes. Player 2 can join or leave during a stage. Nintendo developer Shinya Kumazaki described sharing a Joy-Con so a second player can join as Bandana Waddle Dee “at any time within a stage.” This makes it possible to bring in a second player for part of a level or a boss without starting a separate game.

Does local co-op work online or between two Switch consoles?
No. The co-op described by Nintendo is for two people playing together on one system. It is not a mode for connecting two separate consoles over the internet or local wireless. Nintendo’s co-op instructions explain the same-system setup.
Controllers, play modes, and Switch Lite
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes, but notes that compatibility and play experience may differ on Nintendo Switch Lite and that additional accessories may be needed. Check Nintendo’s current guidance for your hardware and controller combination before assuming a particular setup will work. Nintendo’s US store listing also identifies the game as compatible with Nintendo Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch.

Try local co-op with the free demo
Nintendo says the free demo includes three stages and supports two-player local co-op. Demo availability can vary by region, so check the eShop listing for your region to see whether it is offered there.
