Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update, choose an end date under Pause updates, and resume sooner once the app publisher confirms compatibility. Microsoft’s current guidance allows a pause of up to 35 days from the date you select; it is not a permanent way to turn updates off.
Before pausing, check whether the app is ready
First, look for a compatible app version rather than assuming Windows updates must be held. For a Microsoft Store app, check the Store for updates. For other software, check the app publisher’s website and ask whether your specific app version supports the Windows release you use. Microsoft notes that older applications can encounter problems after a Windows version change because of operating-system architecture, security features, or system requirements. Microsoft’s app compatibility guidance suggests checking with the publisher and trying the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter if no update is available.

How to pause Windows 11 updates
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Under Pause updates, choose an end date in the date picker. Microsoft’s current documented experience uses a date picker, though interface details can roll out gradually and may differ on some PCs.
- Keep track of the date you selected. The pause can extend no more than 35 days from the current date. To extend an active pause, choose a new end date; the new window can run up to 35 days from the day you choose it. Previously paused days are not added to the new window.
Microsoft describes this as a temporary delay, not a permanent way to stop updates. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 pause instructions.

While the pause is active, updates that might require a restart are not downloaded or installed, and Windows does not automatically restart to finish installing them until the pause ends. If an update is already in progress when you pause, Microsoft says that update is canceled. When the pause expires, Windows checks for available updates and downloads and installs them.

When the publisher confirms the app is compatible—or you are ready to update sooner—open Settings > Windows Update and choose the resume control. Windows then checks for updates and downloads and installs the latest available updates. After reaching the pause limit, you must install the latest updates before pausing again. Keep a backup of critical work as a general precaution, and install updates promptly once your app is ready.
Do not interpret a pause as a guarantee that every kind of update-related activity stops on every PC. Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 description of a new monthly restart grouping says some updates remain outside that grouping, including Microsoft Defender security intelligence, AI component, critical or expedited driver, and emergency or out-of-band updates. The article applies to updates released on and after July 28, 2026, and Microsoft says the experience is rolling out gradually, so it may not be available on every device. Microsoft’s description of the restart grouping is specific to that rollout; it should not be treated as a universal statement about all Windows 11 update behavior.

Pause versus a Microsoft safeguard hold
| Mechanism | Who initiates it | What it affects | When it ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| User pause | You, in Windows Update settings | A temporary, general pause on updates that might require a restart | On the date you select, or sooner if you resume updates manually |
| Safeguard hold | Microsoft, when a known compatibility issue affects a device | The offer of a feature update to the affected device | When the originating issue is resolved and the hold is lifted |
A safeguard hold is not another name for your Settings pause. Microsoft says safeguard holds prevent a device with a known issue from being offered a new feature update. If Windows is withholding an update for this reason, do not casually force it through an alternative installation route. In one documented NVIDIA example, certain display drivers could cause a loss of display; Microsoft advised waiting for the updated driver and automatic offer rather than using Update now or the Media Creation Tool first. Read Microsoft’s safeguard hold guidance and its NVIDIA compatibility issue notice.

The documented consumer guidance describes a general pause and feature-update safeguard holds; it does not establish a consumer setting to pause only the one update that conflicts with an app while allowing every other update to proceed.

If there is no app update, try the compatibility troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts to test the app. Microsoft also notes that driver updates may help when an app has problems.
The troubleshooter can help address an app problem, but it is not confirmation from the publisher that the app is supported on a particular Windows release.

Support deadlines vary by Windows version and edition. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 notice says Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of updates on October 13, 2026; Enterprise and Education remain supported until October 12, 2027. These dates apply to those editions of 24H2, not to every Windows 11 PC. If you use 24H2 Home or Pro, a short pause is not a substitute for moving to a supported version. Confirm your Windows version and edition before applying a lifecycle date to your device. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information.

The Windows Update Assistant is not needed for pausing updates; Microsoft says it applies to compatible x86/64 PCs and does not run on ARM-based PCs.
