This device setting is separate from voice and button activation, app permissions, and saved account activity; adjust each separately if you want to change how the assistant works or what it can access.
Change the default digital assistant
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Tap Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app.
- Choose the assistant you want, or select None to remove a default assistant.
On some phones, Google is listed when Gemini or Google Assistant is the selected assistant. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for digital assistant app. The labels and path vary by manufacturer; consult your phone maker’s support instructions if the setting is missing. Google’s instructions for switching assistants describe the general Android path.

Switch between Gemini and Google Assistant
Switch from Gemini to Google Assistant
Open the Gemini mobile app, open its menu or profile area, tap Switch to Google Assistant, and confirm by tapping Switch. Menu placement can change, so use the Settings method above if the in-app option is not where expected. Switching assistants does not erase saved Gemini activity.

Switch from Google Assistant to Gemini
Gemini setup requires the Google app to be the default assist app. Depending on your phone, you can select Gemini in Google Assistant settings in the Google app, or choose it through Android’s default-assistant settings. Gemini requires a signed-in eligible Google Account and a supported device, language, and country or territory. Google cautions that “The Gemini mobile app may not be available for all languages, devices, accounts or locations.” See Google’s Gemini setup and switching instructions for current availability and steps.

Stop voice or button activation without removing the assistant
Changing how the assistant opens is independent of changing the default or uninstalling an app. In Gemini settings, you can turn off Hey Google. To change the power-button shortcut, the generic path is Settings > System > Gestures > Press & hold power button; select a different action if available. Search Settings for power, side button, or gesture if your phone uses different labels. Choosing Digital assistant for that action opens whichever assistant is the device default.
Google says Assistant waits in standby for an activation such as “Hey Google,” and notes that similar-sounding noise or an unintended manual action can trigger it. This is Google’s description of how activation works, not a guarantee that accidental activations never occur. Its help page addresses the question “Is Google Assistant listening to me all the time?”

Review the Google app’s permissions
On Android, Gemini is hosted by the Google app, including when the Gemini app is installed. Google’s Privacy Hub says access to device features such as the microphone, camera, contacts, and location depends on Google app permissions. To review them, open the Google app’s app-info or permissions screen in your phone’s Settings and change access to suit your needs. The exact route and available permission choices vary by Android version and manufacturer. Permission changes are separate from choosing an assistant or changing saved activity. Manage saved activity for each assistant
Gemini Apps Activity
For a personal Google Account, review, delete, or turn off Gemini Apps Activity in the Gemini app’s activity control or through Google My Activity. When Keep Activity is on, saved activity can include prompts and relevant Live transcripts and shared audio, files, images, or video. Work or school account settings may be controlled by a Workspace administrator, so you may not be able to change retention yourself. Turning off Keep Activity is not the same as turning off device assistance: Google says Device assistance is designed to work automatically with Gemini on Android even when Keep Activity is off.
Google Assistant activity
When Web & App Activity is enabled, Google Assistant interactions may be saved to your Google Account. In Google Account activity controls or My Activity, you can delete Assistant activity, choose auto-delete after 3 or 18 months, or keep it until you delete it manually. Google also offers Guest Mode to use Assistant without saving activity to the account or using it for personalization. These account-level choices do not determine which assistant opens from the phone. See Google’s Assistant activity and privacy controls.

Switching between assistants does not automatically delete activity already saved by the other one. If you have used both, review Gemini Apps Activity and Web & App Activity independently.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Uninstalling Gemini but leaving the default unchanged: removing the app does not necessarily remove it as the device’s default assistant. Change the default in Android Settings if you want another assistant or none.
- Turning off Keep Activity to disable Gemini: activity storage and device assistance are separate controls.
- Changing assistants to erase history: saved Gemini and Assistant activity have separate controls and are not automatically deleted when you switch.
- Assuming every phone has identical menus: availability and labels can differ by manufacturer, device, language, location, and account type.
