Choose Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) for the broader official package: six games, campaigns, multiplayer and Firefight across Xbox and Windows. Choose Project Reclaimer if you specifically want its Halo 3 multiplayer client and features such as custom scripted modes, dedicated servers or expanded Forge building—and already have the required Steam installation of MCC with Halo 3 installed. Reclaimer is not a standalone copy of Halo 3 or a replacement for MCC.

What are Project Reclaimer and MCC?

Project Reclaimer is a separate Halo 3 client

Project Reclaimer describes itself as a free, non-commercial multiplayer client for Halo 3 from MCC. It uses the Halo 3 files in the player’s own MCC installation and adds a separate client experience with project-specific multiplayer and Forge features. The project says it includes no game files and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft, Xbox Game Studios, Halo Studios, 343 Industries, Bungie or Activision. Project Reclaimer’s release and repository information identifies the releases as ready-built downloads; its source code is not published there.

MCC is the official six-game collection

Halo Support lists Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo 4 in MCC. Its guide groups the collection’s play into campaign, multiplayer and Firefight. Halo Support’s MCC Quick Start Guide is the source for the current collection overview.

Which one fits what you want to do?

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Campaigns or switching among several Halo games MCC It includes six games and campaign play, as well as multiplayer and Firefight.
A Reclaimer-specific Halo 3 multiplayer client Project Reclaimer The project documents its own multiplayer modes, hosting and Forge features.
Xbox play or local console split-screen MCC Halo Support lists MCC for Xbox and Windows and describes split-screen on Xbox, but not PC.
Reclaimer’s scripted modes or expanded Forge object handling Project Reclaimer Its release notes describe editable scripted modes and Forge maps with as many as 5,000 frozen objects.
Avoiding an extra prerequisite MCC, if you already own it Reclaimer requires a Steam copy of MCC with Halo 3 installed; its download does not provide those game files.

What do you need to run Project Reclaimer?

You need your own Steam installation of MCC, Halo 3 installed, and—according to Reclaimer’s current release notes—the Halo 3 campaign installed. The project explains that the campaign installation supplies menu scenery and Forge items such as campaign vehicles and AI. This is an installation requirement for the client, not a claim that you must play the campaign through Reclaimer.

If the campaign installation is missing, Reclaimer’s release notes direct users to verify the relevant MCC installation through Steam. The project describes its releases as ready-built downloads, but says its source code is not published in the repository.

What platforms and ways to play with friends does MCC support?

Halo Support lists MCC on Xbox and Windows. The guide says Xbox users can play split-screen with up to four people on one console, with one controller per player; split-screen is not available on PC. It also describes online play through Xbox network and cross-play between PC and Xbox, except for Campaign and Campaign Playlists. Check the guide’s details for the modes and platform combination relevant to your group.

Halo’s announcement of MCC coming to PC through Microsoft Store and Steam is historical context, not confirmation of current prices, bundle terms or regional availability. Likewise, Halo Support’s July 14, 2020 patch notes mark when Halo 3 joined MCC on PC and document PC Forge availability and updates; their version and disk-space figures are historical, not current system requirements. Halo Support’s July 14, 2020 patch notes provide that dated context.

What does Reclaimer add for multiplayer and Forge?

Reclaimer’s release notes document editable scripted game modes, with examples including Gun Game, Growth and One in the Chamber. Scripts can be edited and hosted, but the notes describe them as limited: they cannot access files, the network or the player’s PC. This makes them a way to customize supported game behavior, not unrestricted code execution.

  • It may say "promotional copy not for resale" on cover but it is legal to sell in worldwide. It was removed from Xbox One Console combo.

The notes also describe Forge maps using up to 5,000 frozen objects. That is a project feature claim in the v0.8.11 release-note context, not an independent performance benchmark. Players joining a map that uses those objects need the relevant Reclaimer version. The same notes estimate about 450 MB for the Forge object and HUD font cache; that is a release-note estimate, not an independent storage test. Project Reclaimer’s release notes describe these features and requirements.

How should you decide?

  • Pick MCC if you want the official multi-game collection, campaigns, Firefight, Xbox play or console split-screen.
  • Pick Reclaimer alongside MCC if your goal is its particular Halo 3 multiplayer and Forge experience, and you meet its Steam installation requirements.
  • Do not treat Reclaimer as a way to get Halo 3 without MCC. It supplies a client, not the underlying game files.

The available sources do not establish a current Reclaimer player count, comparative performance benchmark, or current MCC price and regional purchase terms. Those figures should not be used to choose between the two without current verification.
