Use the defense the game is built around, and treat stamina (or posture) as a budget rather than a bar to empty. In Elden Ring, keep enough stamina for one defensive action after every attack sequence, dodge as a hit is about to connect, and keep equip load below 70% for a normal or faster roll. Parry only attacks that the specific game allows and learn the release timing on a repeatable enemy. In Sekiro, replace stamina-focused habits with contact deflections, posture pressure, and measured counterattacks.
What parrying, dodging, and stamina management have in common
Soulslike combat rewards decisions made before an attack lands. Every swing, block, roll, sprint, and recovery animation spends time and often spends stamina. If you use the entire budget on offense, you can be unable to evade the next hit even when you recognize it. If you dodge too early, the invulnerability window may end while the enemy’s weapon is still tracking you. If you parry an attack the game does not permit you to parry, the animation becomes a costly mistake.

Bandai Namco Entertainment America describes this design as a commitment to inputs: “One of the major factors that sets ELDEN RING and other Souls games apart from all other games is that they force you to commit to your actions and think about your inputs.” The practical consequence is simple: make each attack with an exit plan.
- Stamina or posture is a combat budget. Spend it while knowing which defensive option remains available.
- Timing and position are separate skills. A correctly timed roll can still fail if it carries you into a second hit or leaves you under a tracking weapon.
- Parries are conditional. The enemy, attack type, weapon, and game rules determine whether a parry can work.
- Recovery is part of the move. Count the animation after your attack or failed parry, not just the instant of impact.
A repeatable routine for any Soulslike fight
Use this sequence when entering an unfamiliar room or learning a boss. It prevents panic reactions from becoming your default strategy.

- Watch one complete enemy string. Do not attack during the first cycle. Note the wind-up, the active hit, the recovery, and whether a second strike follows the first.
- Choose one safe punish. Start with a single light attack or another move that ends well before your stamina is empty. A short punish teaches more than a greedy combo that forces you to guess.
- Leave a defensive reserve. After attacking, stop while you can still roll, block, sprint out, or deflect the next contact. In a stamina-based game, the reserve should cover at least one defensive action.
- React to the active hit, not the wind-up. Begin a dodge when the attack is about to connect. Early rolls often finish before the weapon reaches you.
- Reposition after the first evasion. Check whether the enemy has a delayed follow-up, area effect, or tracking turn. A successful first roll is not permission to attack immediately.
- Test parries away from the boss. Find an ordinary enemy with a repeatable swing. Confirm the timing through a stagger or riposte state before taking the technique into a high-damage encounter.
- Repeat one adjustment at a time. Change either your roll timing, attack count, spacing, or parry attempt. Changing everything at once hides the cause of a failure.
How to dodge reliably
Roll at the moment of contact
A dodge has two useful portions: its invulnerability window and its movement. Pressing the button as soon as an enemy raises a weapon may make you invulnerable too early. Instead, read the final acceleration of the weapon, hand, or body and roll as the hit is about to connect. Slow, delayed attacks are designed to punish the reflex of rolling on the first visual cue.
Do not treat every attack as a command to roll backward. Rolling through an attack can place you beside the enemy, shorten the distance to a punish, and avoid a long-reaching hitbox. Rolling away is safer when the strike creates a lingering area, a second wave, or a grab that remains dangerous after the first impact.
Separate timing from positioning
If a roll appears to succeed but the next hit catches you, the problem may be location rather than timing. Tracking attacks can turn toward your landing point. Angle the roll past the enemy’s shoulder, move laterally before the strike, or sprint out of range when the attack covers the ground. Use spacing for attacks whose active area lasts longer than your dodge.
Recognize delayed and multi-hit attacks
Against a two-hit string, one panic roll can end between impacts. Wait for the first active hit, then decide whether a second roll, a block, or a retreat is safer. Some enemies alternate high and low strikes or add a delayed follow-up after a pause. Learn the complete string before trying to punish it.
Use the safety of recovery windows
Your own recovery animation can be more important than the damage number. A fast attack that leaves you mobile is often preferable to a stronger attack that locks you in place while the enemy’s turn begins. When learning a boss, favor moves you can cancel into movement or guard; add committed attacks only after you can predict the response.
Elden Ring equip load: the thresholds that change your roll
In Elden Ring, equip load is the percentage of your maximum load occupied by armor, weapons, shields, and other equipped gear. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s 2023 Elden Ring How-To Guide Part 2 documents these categories:

| Equip load | Roll result | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| 29.9% or below | Light roll | More mobile than the normal category; useful when you deliberately build around movement. |
| 30%–69.9% | Normal roll | The standard target for a character that wants dependable dodging without sacrificing all equipment weight. |
| 70%–99.9% | Heavy roll | Slower and more committed; treat it as a build choice, not a timing problem. |
| 100% or more | Dodging and jumping are prevented | Remove or swap equipment before entering combat. |
These are Elden Ring thresholds, not genre-wide laws. If your character feels unable to roll, open the equipment screen and lower the percentage before changing your timing. When overloaded, remove a spare weapon, choose lighter armor, or replace a heavy shield; return to 69.9% or below for the normal-roll category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe guide also identifies an Endurance softcap of 50 for stamina gains and 60 for equipment-load gains. A softcap is a point of diminishing returns, not a requirement or a promise that additional levels have no value. Choose Endurance based on whether you need a larger action budget, more room for equipment, or both.
Managing stamina as a combat budget
Reserve one defensive action
In a stamina-based game, the safest attack is the one that ends with enough stamina for the next threat. Before committing, ask whether the remaining bar can pay for one roll, block, sprint burst, or other emergency action. This rule is more useful than memorizing a universal number of attacks because weapon costs and enemy pressure differ.
Stop attacking before the bar is empty
Empty stamina can delay regeneration and leave you unable to respond. Attack once or twice, disengage, and let the bar recover while you watch the enemy. If you need to retreat, sprint only far enough to exit the hitbox; unnecessary sprinting spends the same resource you need for the next defense.
Do not confuse regeneration with permission
A partially refilled bar is not automatically safe. If an enemy is still in an active string, the amount that has regenerated may not cover a dodge and a follow-up. Read the opponent’s recovery, then choose whether to punish or continue waiting.
Build around the actions you actually use
Endurance can increase stamina and, in Elden Ring, equipment load. A character that blocks frequently may value a larger reserve differently from a light-roll character that spends stamina on repeated evasions. Test your intended weapon, shield, and armor together rather than choosing a stat target in isolation.

How to parry without gambling every exchange
First verify that the attack is parryable
Parry rules are game-specific and often attack-specific. Some games exclude grabs, enormous weapons, projectiles, jumping attacks, or supernatural strikes; others assign different rules to different shields, tools, or skills. Read the named game’s mechanics guidance and test the exact enemy move. Never infer that an attack is parryable merely because it looks physical.
Read the release, not the pose
The useful cue is usually the enemy’s final hand or weapon motion, not the beginning of the wind-up. Watch when the strike leaves the ready position and press the parry input so its active window overlaps the incoming hit. If the game offers no obvious flash or sound, use the limb movement and confirm success through a stagger, distinct impact, or riposte opportunity.
Practice on a repeatable target
Choose an ordinary enemy whose attack starts from a consistent distance. Stand at the same range, observe several cycles, and practice the same swing until you can identify the release without guessing. Then vary your distance and test a second attack. This teaches both timing and the effect of tracking.
Recover from a failed attempt
A missed parry often leaves you in recovery while the enemy is still attacking. Do not immediately repeat the input. If the game permits it, block, roll, or move away as soon as recovery ends. If the attack is not parryable, replace the attempt with a dodge or spacing response and reserve parries for confirmed openings.
Convert the payoff
A successful parry is valuable only if you can reach the resulting riposte or stagger safely. Keep enough stamina to move into range, and check for a second enemy before committing to the finisher. In a group, a normal strike may be safer than standing still for a long riposte animation.
When to dodge, block, or parry
| Situation | Preferred first option | Reason | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| You know the hit timing but not the parry rule | Dodge or create distance | Works without assuming the move is parryable. | Rolling into a delayed follow-up or lingering area. |
| The attack is confirmed parryable and repeatable | Parry | Can create a stagger or riposte and shorten the exchange. | Missing leaves you in recovery. |
| The strike is multi-hit or unusually wide | Spacing, then a late dodge | Exits the active area instead of relying on one invulnerability window. | Retreating too far can surrender your punish. |
| You have a stable shield and enough stamina | Block, if the game supports it efficiently | Preserves position and avoids a difficult timing check. | Chip damage, guard break, or an empty stamina bar. |
| Your stamina is nearly empty | Stop attacking and reposition | Regeneration restores future options. | Greed turns a safe opening into a hit taken. |
Use the table as a decision order, not a rigid rule. The correct response depends on the named game’s hitboxes, recovery animations, shield behavior, and enemy tracking.

Elden Ring and Sekiro use different defensive loops
Both games are often discussed as Soulslikes, but advice from one should not be copied mechanically into the other.
Recommended Free Tools
| Axis | Elden Ring | Sekiro |
|---|---|---|
| Primary defense | Rolling, blocking, spacing, and optional parries. | Timed deflections, with movement and a safety roll used in specific situations. |
| Resource pressure | Stamina governs attacking, dodging, blocking, and related actions; Endurance affects the stamina pool. | Posture is central to the exchange; maintaining pressure and deflecting on contact are more important than stamina budgeting. |
| Timing question | When should the dodge’s invulnerability window meet the hit? | When should the deflection meet the incoming weapon contact? |
| Payoff | Position, damage, stagger, or a riposte opportunity. | Posture damage and a posture break that can enable a deathblow. |
| Useful habit | Attack once or twice, preserve a defensive reserve, and disengage before the stamina bar is empty. | Maintain controlled pressure, deflect on contact, and use the safety roll after a posture break or knockdown when needed. |
In Sekiro, a player who constantly retreats to wait for stamina can give the enemy time to recover posture. Stay engaged when the game expects deflection, but do not mash blindly: the goal is a deliberate contact rhythm. In Elden Ring, the opposite mistake is common—continuing to swing after the stamina reserve that would have paid for a roll is gone.

Drill 1: the observation cycle
Enter a low-risk area and watch one enemy perform its complete string. Identify which motion actually causes damage, whether the attack tracks your movement, and how long the recovery lasts. Repeat until you can call the hit before it lands.
Drill 2: single-punish discipline
Allow the enemy to finish, land one attack, and immediately return to defense. This establishes the minimum safe punish. Add a second attack only when the first version succeeds consistently and your stamina remains above the reserve you need.
Drill 3: late-roll confirmation
Stand at a fixed distance and roll only when the hit is about to connect. If you are struck, determine whether the input was early, late, or aimed into the follow-up. Correct one cause, then repeat.
Drill 4: parry confirmation
Use the same ordinary enemy and the same attack. Practice the release timing until the result is repeatable. Test another attack only after you can distinguish a successful parry from a normal block, trade, or missed input.
Best Value
Drill 5: pressure and posture in Sekiro
Against a suitable enemy, stay close enough to threaten, deflect each contact, and strike only when the rhythm gives you a safe opening. Watch the posture exchange rather than waiting for a stamina bar to refill. After a posture break or knockdown, use the game’s safety roll or repositioning option when the surrounding situation demands it.
Troubleshooting common failures
“I run out of stamina before I can roll.”
- Reduce the number of attacks in the opening sequence.
- Stop sprinting as soon as you leave the hitbox.
- Check whether blocking, charged attacks, or another action consumed the reserve.
- In Elden Ring, consider Endurance for stamina and equipment-load needs, remembering the documented softcaps of 50 for stamina gains and 60 for equipment-load gains.
“My roll works, but the boss still hits me.”
- Delay the roll until the active hit is near contact.
- Roll across or past the attack instead of directly backward.
- Look for a delayed second hit, lingering area, or tracking turn.
- Use spacing when the hitbox remains active longer than the roll’s invulnerability window.
“My character feels too slow.”
- Check the named game’s load categories rather than assuming a universal threshold.
- In Elden Ring, return below 70% equip load for the normal-roll category; 100% or more prevents dodging and jumping.
- Remove a redundant weapon or lighten armor before sacrificing core defensive tools.
“The parry never seems to work.”
- Confirm that the exact attack is parryable in that game.
- Press on the release motion, not the first wind-up frame you notice.
- Practice at a repeatable distance with an ordinary enemy.
- Check whether success produces a stagger or riposte state; a blocked hit is not a parry.
“I parry successfully but still die.”
- Make sure the riposte is safe from a second enemy or area effect.
- Preserve enough stamina or movement capacity to reach the payoff without panic.
- Use a normal punish when the riposte animation would leave you exposed.
How to choose a defense for a new boss
Before committing to a build or strategy, classify the encounter on four axes:
- Defensive timing: does success come from roll invulnerability, a contact deflection, a block window, or early spacing?
- Resource pressure: does the game spend stamina, posture, health through chip, or another meter?
- Commitment: how long are you locked into an attack, parry recovery, guard, or riposte?
- Payoff: does the defense grant position, direct damage, a stagger, posture damage, or a deathblow opportunity?
Then choose the lowest-risk answer that preserves a punish. If the boss has long, readable swings but punishes missed parries severely, dodge first and add parries later. If the game is built around contact deflections and posture, retreating may be less effective than staying composed and matching the rhythm. If your equipment makes the required movement unavailable, change the load before trying to overcome the problem with faster reactions.

What cannot be generalized across Soulslikes
There is no genre-wide parry window, dodge-frame average, player success rate, or universal equip-load percentage. Exact animation timings vary by game, enemy, weapon, difficulty mode, and patch. A timing learned in one title can be early in another, and a move that is parryable in one game may require a dodge or jump elsewhere.
Use a game’s own terminology and current mechanics guidance when available. Verify exact frame counts or animation timings for the named game and patch before treating them as technical facts. The reliable cross-game principles are narrower: observe a complete string, preserve a defensive option, react to the active hit, confirm parry rules, and match your resource habits to the system the game actually uses.
A compact pre-fight checklist
- What is this game’s primary defense: roll, block, deflection, spacing, or a mix?
- Which resource pays for my defense, and how much must remain after an attack?
- Is my equipment load in the movement category I intend to use?
- Which enemy attacks have I confirmed as parryable?
- Does this attack track, delay, or hit more than once?
- Where is the recovery window that lets me punish safely?
- What is my escape if the first response fails?
Answering those questions turns parry and dodge practice into a repeatable process instead of a reflex test. In a stamina-based game, end each exchange with options still available; in a posture-centered game such as Sekiro, stay engaged enough to deflect and maintain pressure. The best defense is the one that fits the game’s rules, your current resource, and the enemy’s next guaranteed threat.
