To pair Bluetooth headphones, put the headphones into pairing mode, turn on Bluetooth on your phone, laptop, or tablet, and select the headphone name from the device’s Bluetooth settings. The exact button or gesture that activates pairing mode varies by headphone model, so check its manual if you’re unsure.

The setup has two parts: make the headphones discoverable, then choose them on the device you want to use. Once paired, they are usually saved, so you can reconnect later without starting over. The steps below cover Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and iPad, followed by fixes for headphones that do not appear or connect.

Before you start: put the headphones in pairing mode

  1. Charge or power on the headphones. For rechargeable headphones or speakers, Microsoft recommends leaving them connected to power while pairing.
  2. Activate pairing or discovery mode using the model-specific control. It may be a power or Bluetooth button, a control on an earbud case, or another gesture. Consult the headphone manual or manufacturer support page for the exact steps; there is no universal button combination.
  3. Keep the headphones near the phone, computer, or tablet. If they are already connected to another source, disconnect them there; some models will not become discoverable while connected elsewhere.

Pairing mode lets a nearby device find the headphones. Simply turning them on may not be enough: they can be powered on and still not be discoverable to a new phone or computer. The indicator light, tone, button sequence, or case procedure that signals pairing mode differs by product, so do not rely on a sequence from a different model.

Microsoft’s Windows pairing instructions similarly require the accessory to be in pairing mode and within range. Keep the headphones close to the source device while setting them up, and follow the manufacturer’s procedure if they do not appear.

Pair headphones with an Android phone or tablet

  1. Open Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Tap Pair new device. The precise menu location can differ by Android version and manufacturer.
  3. Put the headphones into pairing mode if you have not already.
  4. When the headphone name appears under available devices, tap it and follow any prompts.

Google’s standard route is documented in Find & set up Bluetooth devices near your Android device. The source device needs Bluetooth enabled, and the headphones need to be discoverable for their name to appear in the available-devices list. Menu labels and some functions vary with Android version, hardware, and manufacturer-customized software. If the labels on your phone or tablet differ, look for Bluetooth settings and the option to pair or add a device.

Supported Fast Pair headphones may show a nearby-device prompt instead, offering a shorter setup route. Fast Pair depends on both the accessory and device; it is not required for ordinary Bluetooth pairing. If no prompt appears, use the standard Bluetooth settings route above.

After the first pairing, Android saves the connection. Google states, “Your devices stay paired until you unpair them.” To reconnect, select the headphones from saved or paired devices rather than repeating the initial pairing process. A saved relationship does not mean that the headphones will always be connected: Bluetooth must be available, and the devices need to be in range.

Pair headphones with an iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Put the headphones in pairing mode.
  3. Tap the headphone name when it appears in the device list, then follow any on-screen prompts.

See Apple’s Connect iPhone to Bluetooth accessories for the iPhone interface. A non-Apple headset may not display an Apple-specific setup animation; select it from the Bluetooth list when it appears. If you do not see the name, check that the headphones are actually in pairing mode and close enough to the iPhone, then refresh or reopen the list.

After pairing, the iPhone has a saved relationship with the headphones. For later use, look for the headphones in the Bluetooth device list and reconnect rather than assuming you must pair them from scratch each time. If you are using an iPad or Mac, consult the current Apple instructions for that device: the exact menus need not match the iPhone screens.

Pair headphones with a Windows laptop or PC

First confirm that the computer has Bluetooth hardware and that Bluetooth is on. Windows menu names and support status depend on the version. The headphones must also be in pairing mode and within range before the PC can find them.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices, or open Bluetooth from Quick Settings.
  2. Open the controls to manage Bluetooth devices and add or discover a device.
  3. Put the headphones into pairing mode. Select their name when it appears among new devices, then complete any prompts.

On supported accessories, Windows may offer Swift Pair when the headphones are nearby and discoverable. Swift Pair is an optional shortcut, not a requirement for pairing, and it is available only for supported accessories. If no Swift Pair prompt appears, use the Bluetooth settings flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows covers the current Windows flow. Once a device is paired, Windows says it can connect automatically when it is in range. If the headphones have already been paired with this PC, check the saved device list before trying to add them as new.

Windows 10 (legacy instructions)

Use Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices, turn Bluetooth on, and choose the option to add a Bluetooth or other device. Select the headphones when they appear and follow the prompts. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so this is a legacy route; see Microsoft’s Windows pairing guide for its instructions.

If the PC does not have Bluetooth

A desktop or laptop without built-in Bluetooth cannot discover Bluetooth headphones until Bluetooth capability is added. Microsoft identifies a USB Bluetooth adapter as one option. This is relevant to a PC that lacks Bluetooth hardware, not a replacement pairing step for phones or tablets that already support Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is built in, an adapter is not a necessary part of pairing; first check that the PC’s Bluetooth control is on.

See Microsoft’s Windows pairing instructions.

Pair headphones with a Mac or iPad

On a Mac or iPad, open the device’s Bluetooth settings, make sure Bluetooth is active, put the headphones into pairing mode, and select them when listed. Menu labels and steps vary by device and software version; use Apple’s current support guidance for the exact Mac or iPad interface rather than assuming it matches the iPhone path. Apple’s iPhone Bluetooth accessory guide applies specifically to iPhone.

The same general sequence still applies: make the headphones discoverable, enable Bluetooth on the source, and select the headphone name when it appears. If a particular Mac or iPad menu does not match that description, use the help for the current operating system rather than following iPhone-specific taps.

Pairing, reconnecting, and connecting to two devices

Pairing saves a relationship between the headphones and a source device. Once paired, headphones typically reconnect when Bluetooth is on and the devices are in range. Windows describes paired Bluetooth devices as reconnecting automatically when in range; Android likewise supports connecting to a previously paired device. If the headphones are already saved, look for them in the paired or saved devices list instead of starting over.

There is a useful distinction between paired and connected. Pairing is the initial setup that lets a source remember the headphones. Reconnecting uses that saved relationship later. If the headphones appear in a saved list, but are not currently connected, try selecting that saved entry. Removing or unpairing them is different: it clears the saved relationship, so you may need to perform the initial pairing steps again.

Pairing with a phone does not, by itself, mean the headphones can stay connected to a laptop at the same time. Simultaneous connections require headphone support for multipoint. Google’s Set up Multipoint headphones on your devices describes supported headphones connecting to two sources at once. For Google’s documented Android setup, Android 8 or later and Google Play services are required, and both sources must first be paired. To switch audio, stop playback on the first source and start it on the other.

That means there are two separate questions when using headphones with more than one device: have you paired them with each source, and do the headphones support a simultaneous multipoint connection? If they do not support multipoint, do not assume ordinary pairing will keep both sources connected at once. Pairing or reconnecting is not the same feature as switching audio between two active sources.

  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

Why won’t my headphones show up in Bluetooth?

Work through these checks in order. The controls for pairing mode and status indicators differ by model, so consult the manufacturer’s instructions if the first checks do not help.

  • Pairing mode: Confirm the headphones are discoverable, not merely powered on. Re-enter pairing mode using the manual’s steps. If you are unsure how the indicator should look or sound, check the instructions for the exact model.
  • Range: Move the headphones close to the phone, tablet, or PC while setting them up. Microsoft’s Windows guide states, “Your Bluetooth device must be in pairing mode and within range of your PC.”
  • Power: Charge the headphones or keep them connected to power during pairing. A low battery is one of the first basic issues to rule out.
  • Existing connection: Disconnect the headphones from another nearby phone, laptop, or tablet. A current connection can prevent discovery by a second source on some models. Manufacturer instructions may explain how to disconnect an existing source before making the headphones discoverable.
  • Refresh the list: Refresh or reopen the available-device list. Google recommends checking the accessory instructions and refreshing nearby-device results in its Android Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.

If those checks do not help, make sure the source device’s Bluetooth setting is on and repeat the sequence: set the headphones to pairing mode, keep them nearby, then reopen the list of available devices. Avoid relying on the remembered name alone if the headphones are not currently discoverable; a device can be saved on a phone or PC and still need to be placed in pairing mode to pair with a different source.

Why do they appear but fail to connect?

  1. Charge the headphones, then power them off and on.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off and back on on the source device, then try selecting the headphones again.
  3. On Windows, remove the old headphone entry from Bluetooth devices and add it again. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide also recommends using the Bluetooth troubleshooter, installing available updates, and restarting the computer when connection problems persist.
  4. If those steps fail, consult the headphone maker’s instructions for a model-specific reset. A factory reset is not universal and can erase saved pairings.

On Windows, check the old device record before repeatedly attempting to pair. Removing an existing entry and adding the headphones again can help when the saved pairing is stale. The troubleshooter, system updates, and a computer restart are additional steps Microsoft recommends if basic reconnection does not work. Keep the headphones connected to power while pairing if they are rechargeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use a reset sequence found for another headphone model. Reset procedures are product-specific, and a factory reset can clear saved pairings, which means you may have to pair the headphones again with devices you previously used.

Headphones connect, but sound still plays through the device

Check the source device’s audio output selector or sound settings and choose the headphones as the playback device. A Bluetooth connection and the selected audio output are separate settings on many devices. The exact menu path varies, so use the device’s current help instructions if you cannot find the output control.

This check is useful after the device reports that the headphones are connected: confirm that the headphones are also selected for audio output. The Bluetooth pairing steps establish the connection, but the source may have a separate choice for where sound plays.

Where to find model-specific pairing instructions

Because the control that makes headphones discoverable differs across products, the headphone’s manual or manufacturer support page is the best source for that step. For example, Sony’s Bluetooth headphone pairing guide explains why pairing procedures depend on the headphone model and source device. Once pairing mode is active, use the relevant Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, or iPad route above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When choosing which instructions to follow, match both sides of the setup: the model-specific headphone procedure and the operating system on the device you want to connect. Android’s menus can vary by version and manufacturer; Windows paths differ between Windows 11 and the legacy Windows 10 route; and Apple’s iPhone, Mac, and iPad instructions should not be treated as identical interfaces. The general order stays simple even when the buttons and labels change: discoverable headphones, Bluetooth enabled on the source, then select the headphones.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pair my headphones every time I use them?

No. After the first pairing, the device usually saves the headphones. Google says paired Android devices remain paired until unpaired, and Windows says paired devices can connect automatically when in range. If they are saved but not currently connected, choose them from the paired or saved devices list.

Why are my headphones not listed even though they are turned on?

They may be powered on without being in discoverable pairing mode. Enter pairing mode using the procedure for the exact headphone model, keep the headphones close to the source device, and refresh or reopen its available-device list. Also check battery level and whether the headphones are connected to another source.

Can I connect the same headphones to my phone and laptop at the same time?

Only if the headphones support multipoint for simultaneous connections. Ordinary pairing with both devices does not guarantee that they can remain connected to both at once. Google’s documented Android multipoint setup applies to supported headphones, requires Android 8 or later and Google Play services, and requires pairing both sources first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between pairing and reconnecting?

Pairing establishes a saved relationship between the headphones and a source device. Reconnecting uses that saved relationship later, usually when Bluetooth is enabled and the devices are in range. If the headphones are still listed as paired, try selecting them there rather than adding them as new.

Can I use Swift Pair or Fast Pair instead of Bluetooth settings?

Sometimes. Windows Swift Pair is available only for supported accessories, and Android Fast Pair also depends on the headphone and device. If the optional prompt does not appear, use the standard Bluetooth settings route for that platform.

What if my Windows PC has no Bluetooth?

A PC without built-in Bluetooth needs Bluetooth capability added before it can discover Bluetooth headphones. Microsoft identifies a USB Bluetooth adapter as one option. This is a Windows computer issue; it is not an extra requirement for a phone or tablet that already supports Bluetooth.

Should I factory-reset the headphones if pairing fails?

Not as a first step. Try charging and power-cycling the headphones, toggling Bluetooth on the source, and retrying. If a reset is still needed, use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model: reset procedures vary, and a factory reset can erase saved pairings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is there no Apple setup animation for my headphones?

Not every non-Apple headphone shows an Apple-specific setup animation. On iPhone, turn on Bluetooth, put the headphones in pairing mode, and select their name when it appears in the device list.
