How Android’s Offline Device Finding Works—and What It Can’t Do

Find Hub may show an encrypted recent location or a network detection for an offline Android phone, but neither guarantees a live position. Power-off finding is limited to supported phones and specific settings.

Yes, an Android phone may still appear in Google Find Hub after it goes offline, but that does not guarantee a live location. Find Hub can show an encrypted location the phone stored while it was online. If you enabled network finding, nearby participating Android devices may also detect the missing phone’s Bluetooth signal and report its location. Finding a phone after shutdown is a separate, device-specific capability available on certain supported phones for a limited time.

What happens when an Android phone goes offline?

“Offline” can mean the phone has no mobile data or Wi-Fi, has lost its connection for another reason, or has run out of power. Find Hub may still have information about where it was, but the kind of information depends on what was set up before the phone went missing.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

There are two main routes. First, the phone can store an encrypted recent location while it is online. If it later disconnects, Find Hub may show that stored position. It describes where the phone was when the location was saved, not necessarily where it is now. Second, if offline network finding is enabled, nearby participating Android phones can detect the missing phone over Bluetooth and securely send a detection location to Find Hub.

Neither route promises a fresh or precise result. A stored position can become out of date, and a network detection depends on another participating device coming close enough to the missing phone. If neither source has a usable location, Find Hub may show an older position or no location.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

How does offline finding work?

Encrypted recent location

While the phone is online, Find Hub can save an encrypted recent location. If the phone later goes offline, that stored information may let its owner see where it was last online. The age of that position matters: a phone could have moved since then, and the map does not turn a last-known location into a live one.

Nearby-device detection

With a network-finding option enabled, participating Android devices use Bluetooth to scan for nearby items. If one detects the missing phone, it can send a detection location securely to Find Hub. The owner can then see a location and an approximate last-seen time.

This is a crowdsourced system, not a direct connection to the missing phone. It depends on a suitable nearby device detecting it, so results can vary with the phone’s surroundings and the network setting chosen by its owner. Google does not publish an offline-finding success rate, average time to detection, percentage of Android devices participating, or network-coverage figure in the official guidance described here.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Busy places and remote areas

In the default busy-places mode, reports from multiple Android devices are aggregated before Find Hub displays a calculated location. Google says aggregation is intended to help locate items in busy places while protecting the privacy of contributing devices. The everywhere mode can use a report when one device is the only one that detected the item, which can help in remote areas. It changes how detections may be used; it does not guarantee that a detector will be nearby.

Which “Find your offline devices” setting should you choose?

Find Hub offers four choices for offline finding. The setting affects whether the phone stores a recent location and whether it can use or contribute to network detections. The wording or Settings path may change as Android and Find Hub are updated; if the labels below do not match your phone, search Settings for “Find Hub” or check the phone maker’s instructions.

Setting Recent encrypted location Network finding What it means
Off No No The phone does not store recent locations for offline finding or participate in the network.
Without network Yes No The phone can use its encrypted recent location and those for connected Fast Pair accessories, but not tracker tags or network detections.
With network in busy places only Yes Yes, in busy places Network assistance is limited to busy places. A screen lock is required to receive network help finding your own items.
With network everywhere Yes Yes, in busy and remote areas Network assistance can use detections in more places, including when one device is the only one to detect an item. A screen lock is required to receive that help.

The choice is a trade-off between network participation and the areas where detections may help. “Without network” still allows the recent-location route, while the two network modes add potential help from nearby Android devices. “Everywhere” is not a coverage guarantee; all network modes still depend on a detection.

Can you find an Android phone if it is turned off?

Only some phones support finding after shutdown or battery depletion, and the ability lasts for a limited time. Google’s current guidance, reviewed on October 11, 2026, names Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series phones as examples of supported devices that may remain locatable for several hours after they shut down or run out of battery. Do not assume this feature is available on every Android phone or on every model in a different product family.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this power-off finding to work, the offline network setting must be enabled, and Bluetooth and Location must have been on when the phone shut down. If those conditions were not met, or the phone is not a supported model, the usual possibilities are a previously stored recent location or a location from a network detection before the phone became unavailable. Google may change its supported-device list and feature requirements over time.

How to prepare your phone before it goes missing

Most of the decisions that affect recovery need to be made while you still have the phone. Check these settings in advance; exact menus can vary by Android version and manufacturer.

  1. Add and retain access to a Google Account. Confirm that Find Hub is allowed to locate the phone and that the device is visible on Google Play. If you cannot sign in from another device later, you may be unable to retrieve the account’s location information.
  2. Set a screen lock. Use a PIN, pattern, or password. Google requires a screen lock for users to receive network help finding their own items.
  3. Choose an offline-finding mode. In Settings, search for “Find Hub” and review “Find your offline devices.” Choose between storing a recent location only and enabling network assistance in busy places or everywhere.
  4. Keep Bluetooth and Location on if power-off finding matters to you. On supported phones, Google says both must have been enabled when the phone shut down. This setting does not extend power-off support to unsupported models.
  5. Prepare an account recovery route. Save two-step-verification backup codes somewhere you can reach without the missing phone, so losing your primary device does not also lock you out of the Google Account.
  6. Know how you will open Find Hub elsewhere. Be ready to use another Android device or a browser and sign in to the account associated with the missing phone.

Android 8.0 and earlier cannot participate in the broader Find Hub network, according to Google’s current guidance. Encrypted recent locations for the device and connected accessories may still be stored, so inability to participate in the network does not necessarily mean there is no offline location information at all.

Why is Find Hub showing the phone’s last location—or no location?

A map result is only as useful as its source and age. A last-online location may predate the moment the phone went missing. A network location requires a participating device to pass close enough to detect the phone, and a setting that permits network finding. A location may also be unavailable if the phone has no power, lacks cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity, has physical damage, is in Airplane mode, or has Wi-Fi turned off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s troubleshooting guidance also describes encrypted recent locations that are out of sync and a “Sync recent location” step. If Find Hub indicates a sync issue, follow the on-screen sync instructions where available; a delayed or unsynced location should not be treated as the phone’s current position.

Even when a location is available, accuracy varies. Google gives GPS accuracy of up to around 20 metres in suitable conditions, but says GPS can be inaccurate indoors or underground. Location based on mobile towers may be accurate only to a few thousand metres. These are general examples from Google’s lost-device guidance, not guaranteed accuracy ranges for every offline Find Hub result. Treat the position as a search area, especially if the phone may be inside a building or underground.

Does offline location mean you can remotely lock or erase the phone?

No. Offline location assistance and remote security actions are different capabilities. Google lists power, mobile data or Wi-Fi, a Google Account, Find Hub enabled, and device visibility on Google Play as requirements for remote lock or erase actions. A location may remain viewable from previously stored or network-reported information even when the missing phone cannot receive a new command. Do not assume that finding an offline phone means a lock or erase request has already reached it.

If the phone cannot be found, Google advises contacting your mobile provider to ask about deactivating it using its IMEI. This is a separate step from Find Hub. Keep the IMEI available through a record you can access without the missing device.

What privacy protections apply to network finding?

Google says Find Hub encrypts item locations end to end with a unique key that only the owner can access through the Android device’s PIN, pattern, or password. Google also says that it cannot identify the user when their Android device shares a detected item’s location. People searching for an item receive the detected location and approximate last-seen time.

Encryption does not mean that no information is processed. Google says the service processes temporary device identifiers, timestamps for detections and location requests, and information about paired or shared Fast Pair accessories. Busy-places mode aggregates reports from multiple devices before showing a calculated location; everywhere mode can use a single device’s detection. Those differences are relevant when deciding which network setting to enable.

Can a tracker tag help find the phone?

A Find Hub-compatible Bluetooth tracker tag can help locate a separate tagged item, such as keys or a wallet. It is not a way to make the Android phone itself easier to find. Google says compatible tags can be added after pairing, and its settings guidance notes that tracker tags are not available in “Without network” mode. If you use a tag, verify that the specific model is compatible with Find Hub and choose a network setting that supports its use.
