On a Windows PC, an Xbox controller can connect by Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, or USB. Which options work depends on the controller model and the PC’s hardware. If wireless pairing fails, connect by USB to check whether the controller works at all, then troubleshoot the wireless method or check for a firmware update.
Choose how to connect the controller
Microsoft lists three ways to connect an Xbox controller to a Windows PC: Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, and USB. They are not interchangeable in every setup: the PC needs the relevant wireless hardware, and the controller must support the method you choose. A USB connection is also a useful first test when a wireless connection is unreliable.

| Connection method | What you need | Best use | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | A Bluetooth-capable PC and a controller that supports Bluetooth | Wireless play when both devices support it | Confirm Bluetooth is available on the PC and that the exact controller generation supports it. Compatibility can vary by model. |
| Xbox Wireless | A PC and controller that support Xbox Wireless; the required PC hardware or accessory depends on the setup | Wireless connection when Bluetooth is unavailable or unsuitable | Check compatibility for the particular controller and PC or accessory before relying on this method. The connection requirements are not the same as Bluetooth. |
| USB | A cable that fits the controller and can carry data | Wired play, isolating wireless trouble, or troubleshooting firmware | Make sure the cable is firmly seated at both ends. A cable that fits is not necessarily capable of data communication. |
Microsoft’s Windows guidance identifies these three connection methods but does not establish that every controller generation supports Bluetooth or that every cable fits every controller. Check your controller’s model and connection requirements before buying an adapter or cable. The available evidence does not establish a dependable range, latency, or feature comparison among the methods, so choose based on compatibility and whether you need a wired diagnostic connection.
Make a quick compatibility check before pairing
Start by identifying the controller model or generation and the connection method you want to use. Then check that the PC has the required wireless capability and that the controller supports that method. Do not infer Bluetooth support from Xbox Wireless support, or the other way around: they are separate methods with different requirements. If you are unsure about the controller’s capabilities, use its model-specific instructions rather than assuming all Xbox controllers pair the same way.

For a wired connection, check the controller’s connector before choosing a cable. A cable must fit the controller, reach the PC, and support data communication if you want the computer to recognize the controller or use it for firmware troubleshooting. A power-only cable may charge or power a device without providing the data connection needed here. USB-C and micro-USB are examples of connector types that can apply to different controller generations; match the cable to your exact controller rather than relying on a listing that says only “Xbox cable.”
There is no single best connection for every PC. USB is the simplest way to bypass wireless pairing while testing, Bluetooth can be convenient when both devices support it, and Xbox Wireless is another option when the necessary compatible hardware is present. The right choice depends on your equipment and purpose. The Microsoft material used here does not provide a supported comparison of range, latency, or special features, so those should not be the deciding claims unless you check current specifications for your exact devices.
Pair over Bluetooth on a Windows PC
Use Bluetooth only if the PC has Bluetooth capability and the controller model supports Bluetooth. Windows menu labels can differ by version, but the usual route is to open Settings, select Bluetooth & devices, and choose the option to add a device. Select Bluetooth, then put the controller into pairing mode using the instructions for its exact model and select it when Windows lists it.

- Open Windows Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Choose Add device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into pairing mode according to its model-specific instructions. Do not assume every controller generation uses the same pairing procedure.
- When the controller appears in Windows’ list of Bluetooth devices, select it and allow the pairing process to finish.
- Test the controller in the game or app where you intend to use it. If Windows does not find it or the connection drops, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than repeating the same attempt indefinitely.
If the controller never appears, first verify controller compatibility and the PC’s Bluetooth capability. A controller that connects by USB but does not pair over Bluetooth may have a wireless-method, settings, or compatibility issue; that test does not prove which component is at fault.
Keep the two ends of the pairing process in view: Windows must have Bluetooth available, and the controller must be in pairing mode for its particular model. If either condition is missing, repeating the search in Windows is unlikely to solve the underlying issue. If Bluetooth support is uncertain, verify the PC and controller specifications before buying an adapter or deciding that the controller is defective.
Connect with Xbox Wireless
Xbox Wireless is a separate connection method from Bluetooth. It is an option only when the PC setup and controller support it. The exact hardware requirements depend on the setup, so check the requirements for the particular controller and PC—or the compatible wireless accessory you intend to use—before purchasing anything.

Follow the pairing instructions for the specific Xbox Wireless hardware and controller model. Do not substitute Bluetooth pairing steps: the two methods use different connection requirements. If the controller is not detected, confirm the PC or accessory supports Xbox Wireless and that the controller is compatible. Then test with USB to distinguish a general controller problem from a wireless connection problem.

An Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows may be an option when Bluetooth is unavailable or unsuitable, but check current compatibility and availability for the exact controller and PC before buying one. The adapter is not simply a Bluetooth adapter, and its requirements should not be assumed to match Bluetooth pairing. Verify the setup instructions for the specific accessory you plan to use. If an accessory does not work, first check that it is intended for the controller and Windows setup in question rather than changing unrelated Bluetooth settings.
Connect by USB
A USB connection avoids wireless pairing and provides a practical diagnostic test. Use a cable with a connector that fits the controller, connect it firmly to the controller and PC, and give Windows a moment to recognize the device. If it works over USB, test the controller in the intended game or app.
If the PC does not recognize the controller, reseat both ends of the cable and try another cable. The cable must support data for the PC to communicate with the controller; a cable that only provides power may not establish a usable connection or support firmware troubleshooting. Connector type and fit depend on controller generation, so do not assume one cable works with every model.
For troubleshooting, change one thing at a time. First make sure both plugs are fully seated. If nothing changes, swap to a different compatible, data-capable cable and test again. This separates a potentially unsuitable or faulty cable from the wireless issue you were originally investigating. If you are buying a cable, confirm both the connector type and data capability; a matching plug by itself is not enough to establish that it will work for PC communication.

When a controller will not connect wirelessly, test it over USB before changing settings or replacing hardware. If it works over USB, concentrate next on the wireless method you selected: check the PC’s Bluetooth capability and settings if you chose Bluetooth, or verify the Xbox Wireless hardware and controller compatibility if you chose Xbox Wireless. A successful USB test narrows the problem, but it does not guarantee that the controller’s wireless hardware is healthy.

- Works by USB, but not through Xbox Wireless: Check that both the controller and the PC setup or accessory support Xbox Wireless, then follow that hardware’s pairing instructions.
- Does not work by USB or wirelessly: Check cable fit and try another suitable data-capable cable. If connection problems persist, check the controller firmware.
- Connects, then stops working: Retest by USB. If wired operation remains stable, troubleshoot the selected wireless method rather than treating the symptom alone as proof of a failed controller.
Use those results as clues, not as a definitive hardware diagnosis. A controller that works over USB but not wirelessly points attention toward the selected wireless method, PC settings, or compatibility; it does not prove that the wireless hardware is broken. If it fails over USB too, that could still be a cable or connection problem, so test another suitable cable before concluding that the controller itself has failed.
Check and update controller firmware on an Xbox console
Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions describe checking for controller firmware through the Xbox console. The menu path in the video description is Xbox guide > Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories. Select the controller and open its … option to check for firmware. If the console offers an update, follow its on-screen prompts.
- Open the Xbox guide.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
- Select the controller, then choose its … option to check its firmware.
- If an update is offered, follow the console prompts and leave the controller connected while it completes.
In a troubleshooting video published on February 23, 2021, Microsoft Helps says that if the console reports no update is available, the controller is current. If an update does not complete or the problem remains, Microsoft recommends disconnecting accessories and trying again, power cycling the console, checking that the cable is firmly seated, and trying a different cable. The video also advises allowing up to five minutes with the controller connected over USB because the update may take time in the background. Do not disconnect it simply because progress is not immediate.

Microsoft’s guidance specifically allows up to five minutes for an update to complete in the background. If it still does not finish, check the cable connection, try another suitable cable, disconnect accessories, and retry; if necessary, power cycle the console and attempt the update again. Avoid treating “no update available” as a failed update: according to the Microsoft Helps video, that message means the controller is current.
Try the Xbox Accessories app if console updating does not help
Microsoft’s 2021 troubleshooting video suggests trying the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows 10 PC if updating through the console does not resolve the problem. Because that instruction is dated and specifically names Windows 10, check the current app and Windows instructions for your PC before relying on that route. Connect the controller with a suitable USB cable, open the app if it is available for your setup, and follow the prompts it displays. The video does not establish current app availability or a current Windows procedure for every version.
This is a later troubleshooting step, not a reason to skip the cable check. Confirm that the cable is seated and supports data, and use another compatible cable if needed. The video’s PC recommendation is a fallback when console updating has not fixed the problem; it does not promise that the app will be available or resolve every controller issue on every current Windows version.

When to suspect the cable, controller, or compatibility
Suspect the cable or connection first
If USB does not work, reseat the cable at both ends and test another cable that fits the controller and supports data. A loose connection can interrupt recognition or an update, and a power-only cable may not work for PC communication. Verify connector fit for the exact controller rather than forcing a cable that does not match.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck compatibility before replacing wireless hardware
A controller that works wired but not wirelessly is not, by itself, evidence that the controller needs replacement. Confirm first whether the chosen method is supported by both the controller generation and PC setup. Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless are distinct methods, and the requirements for one do not establish support for the other.
Consider replacement only after basic checks
Before replacing a controller, try a different suitable cable, confirm the intended wireless method is supported, and check for a firmware update. The available guidance does not provide a model-by-model compatibility chart or establish that any single symptom identifies failed hardware. If a controller still cannot connect after those checks, use the support instructions for its exact model to determine next steps.
If replacement is ultimately necessary, choose an Xbox Wireless Controller only after checking its compatibility with the PC and connection method you plan to use. If the problem appears limited to a cable, replacing the cable may be sufficient; match USB-C or micro-USB to the controller generation and make sure the cable supports data when you need PC recognition or firmware troubleshooting. Do not buy an adapter, battery accessory, or replacement controller based only on a symptom when the model requirements have not been confirmed.

The connection guidance does not establish a standard price for a compatible cable, wireless accessory, or replacement controller. Costs and availability can vary, so check current listings rather than relying on a single quoted amount. Before spending money, confirm whether the PC already has the wireless hardware needed for the method you want, whether the controller supports that method, and whether a different data-capable cable could solve a wired or firmware issue.
If Bluetooth is unavailable or unsuitable, an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows may be worth checking, but verify current compatibility and setup details for the exact devices before purchase. If buying a cable, confirm connector fit and data support. These checks help avoid buying an accessory for the wrong wireless method or a cable that only provides power.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect an Xbox controller to a Windows PC?
Microsoft lists Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, and USB as connection methods. Use Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless only if both the controller and PC setup support the selected method. USB requires a cable that fits and supports data. Check the exact controller model and PC requirements before choosing.
Why won’t my Xbox controller connect to my PC over Bluetooth?
Confirm that Bluetooth is available and enabled on the PC and that the controller model supports Bluetooth. Put the controller into pairing mode using its model-specific instructions, then search for it in Windows. If it works by USB but not Bluetooth, that narrows the issue to the wireless method, settings, or compatibility, but does not identify a failed component by itself.
Can I use an Xbox controller with a USB cable instead of pairing it?
Yes, USB is one of Microsoft’s listed Windows connection methods. Use a cable that fits the controller, is firmly seated at both ends, and supports data. Connector type depends on controller generation, and a power-only cable may not let the PC communicate with the controller.
How do I check whether my Xbox controller needs a firmware update?
On an Xbox console, open the guide and go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories. Select the controller and its “…” option to check firmware, then follow the console prompts if an update is offered. Microsoft Helps said in a video published February 23, 2021, that a message saying no update is available means the controller is current.
What should I do if a controller firmware update does not finish?
Check that the cable is firmly seated, try a different compatible data-capable cable, disconnect accessories, and retry. Microsoft’s 2021 troubleshooting video also recommends power cycling the console and allowing up to five minutes with the controller connected over USB because the update may complete in the background. If console updating does not resolve the issue, the video suggests trying the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows 10 PC; verify current app instructions for your Windows version.
Should I replace my controller if it works by USB but not wirelessly?
Not based on that symptom alone. First confirm that the controller and PC setup support the selected wireless method and check the relevant PC settings or accessory. A successful USB test is useful diagnostically, but it does not prove the wireless hardware is faulty or healthy.
What cable or adapter should I buy?
Match the cable’s connector—such as USB-C or micro-USB—to your exact controller generation, and make sure it supports data if you need PC recognition or firmware troubleshooting. If considering an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, verify current compatibility and setup requirements for your controller and PC before buying. No single cable or adapter works for every model and setup.
