You can add language keyboards to an iPhone, switch among them while typing, and—in certain supported combinations—type in more than one language without switching. The keyboard you choose can also change how characters are entered: some layouts offer letters or symbols directly, while Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic keyboards can present suggested characters or candidates for selection. These are software features in iOS; an external keyboard is optional.
Language, layout, and input method are different choices
It helps to separate three things that are often all called a “keyboard language.” The language identifies the language keyboard you add, such as Japanese or Spanish. A layout describes how keys or characters are arranged for that keyboard; a language may have alternative layouts. An input method describes how your typing produces text. Depending on the language and method, you might enter characters directly, type a phonetic form, or choose from suggested characters.

These distinctions explain why switching to a different language keyboard is not always the same as changing the iPhone’s interface language, and why two keyboards for different scripts may work quite differently. The onscreen keyboard is a software interface: it can display letters, symbols, or candidates without requiring a physical key for every character in the final text. Add a keyboard in Settings
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard.
- Choose a language from the available list. If that language offers more than one keyboard or layout, select the one you want.
The exact options depend on the language and the keyboards currently offered by iOS. Adding a keyboard also adds the corresponding language to Preferred Languages. Apple notes that the order of Preferred Languages can affect how apps and websites display text, so changing the keyboard list is not necessarily isolated from language preferences. If you only want to type in another language, check the preferred-language order after adding it rather than assuming the order is irrelevant.

Switch while typing
When the onscreen keyboard is open, touch and hold the Emoji button or keyboard-switch key, then choose an installed keyboard. This is the direct way to move between separately installed keyboards in the middle of a message or document. The button’s appearance can vary with the keyboard being used, but the selection is made from the installed keyboard list. Apple’s guide explains the switching behavior alongside keyboard setup.
Reorder or remove keyboards
Return to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards to manage the list. Apple documents that keyboards can be reordered or removed there. Reordering is useful when you regularly use several languages and want the most-used options closer together in the switcher; removing a keyboard takes it out of that installed list. This does not mean you need a separate keyboard for every language you encounter: add the combinations you actually use, and rely on the documented bilingual feature only where it is available.

Can an iPhone type in two languages without switching?
Sometimes. Apple says bilingual typing is available for select language pairs, not all languages. Its example is English (U.S.) and Spanish (Latin America). With a supported bilingual configuration, you can type in either of those languages without manually changing keyboards for each sentence. Do not assume the same behavior applies to every pair simply because both keyboards can be installed. Apple also states that automatic language switching is not available for all languages. Check the options shown for the particular keyboards you add; otherwise, switch manually using the keyboard selector.

What Apple documents for three languages in one keyboard
Apple’s iOS 18 instructions describe using English and up to two supported Indian languages in one keyboard. The listed examples are Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu. Apple specifies an iPhone 12 or later for this three-language keyboard guidance. Treat that device and software scope as part of the feature description: it does not establish that every iPhone, iOS version, or language pairing has the same combined-keyboard option.

The article also names alphabetical layouts for Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. This is a separate detail from the three-language configuration: the alphabetical-layout list is broader than the list of examples for the English-plus-two-language setup. A language appearing in one list should not be taken as proof that every listed combination is available in the other feature.
Because the three-language instructions are specifically for iOS 18, check the current keyboard list and the iOS version installed on your phone before relying on a feature described for that release. Apple’s iOS 18 support article is the source for the device requirement, supported-language examples, and alphabetical-layout examples.

How Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic character entry works
For Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic onscreen keyboards, Apple describes a candidate-selection step: suggested characters or candidates appear above the keyboard. Tap the character or candidate you want, or swipe to browse more choices. This is why typing in a script does not always mean tapping one key for each final character. The keyboard can accept a form of input and offer possible text for you to select.

Apple’s documentation gives these specific examples of input methods: Simplified Chinese uses Pinyin; Traditional Chinese uses Pinyin and Zhuyin; Japanese uses Romaji and Kana. These names describe examples, not an exhaustive list of all layouts or input methods available. The method you select affects the form in which you enter text, while candidate selection lets you choose the intended result where suggestions are offered. Using an external keyboard is a separate option
The language keyboards described above are software keyboards and do not require an accessory. Apple also documents an alternative layout for Magic Keyboard with iPhone: ABC – Extended. With that layout, the physical keyboard can enter diacritics used in several European languages and tone marks for Mandarin Chinese in Pinyin. This example shows that a hardware keyboard can use a selected software layout; it does not change the onscreen setup steps or make external hardware necessary for multilingual typing.
If you are using a physical keyboard, distinguish the layout configured for that device from the onscreen keyboard list. The ABC – Extended details are specific to Apple’s Magic Keyboard with iPhone layout instructions, not a claim that every external keyboard or layout has the same capabilities.
Choose a setup based on how you enter text
When deciding which keyboard to add, focus on the writing task rather than looking for a single “best” multilingual keyboard. A language can have multiple layout choices, and scripts that use candidate selection have a different workflow from direct character entry. These distinctions also help set expectations about whether a keyboard switch is needed.
- You want to type in another language occasionally: add that language’s keyboard and select it from the keyboard switcher when needed.
- You regularly alternate between two languages: check whether Apple offers a bilingual configuration for that specific pair. The documented feature is limited to select pairs.
- You use English and supported Indian languages: consult Apple’s iOS 18 instructions and confirm that your iPhone meets the stated iPhone 12-or-later requirement before expecting the three-language arrangement.
- You need Chinese, Japanese, or Arabic text: expect a keyboard workflow that can include suggested characters or candidates, and select or browse candidates when necessary.
- You type with an external keyboard: check the hardware-specific layout guidance separately. The documented ABC – Extended example applies to Magic Keyboard with iPhone.
For each option, the useful comparison points are the input approach, the need to switch keyboards, the language and device scope Apple documents, and whether the instructions concern the onscreen keyboard or a physical one. A keyboard list can tell you what is installed; it does not by itself establish that automatic switching or a particular input method is available for every language.
What to check if the keyboard you want is not behaving as expected
- The language is missing from the switcher: open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and check whether it has been added. If not, use Add New Keyboard and select from the available list.
- You cannot find a combined bilingual option: Apple limits bilingual typing to select pairs. A pair of separately installed keyboards does not guarantee that they can type automatically without switching.
- The three-language directions do not match your phone: Apple’s cited instructions describe the feature for iOS 18 and specify iPhone 12 or later. Confirm your iOS version and device rather than generalizing those directions to every model.
- You expected one tap per final character: Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic keyboards can show candidates above the keyboard. Tap the intended candidate or swipe to see more options.
- Apps or websites display text differently after adding a keyboard: Apple says adding a keyboard adds its language to Preferred Languages, whose order can affect display in apps and websites. Review that order if the change is unexpected.
Apple’s current instructions are the best reference for the options actually available on a particular iPhone. Its keyboard list can change over time, and feature support should be read in the context of the named language pair, iOS guidance, and device requirement—not as a universal capability of every iPhone keyboard.
