First check the game’s Humble purchase page: it may include a Steam key, a downloadable game build, or another title-specific entitlement. Redeem a Steam key and install the game through Steam; for a standalone download, install the offered build in Desktop Mode, then add its executable to Steam as a non-Steam game. The second route creates a shortcut, not a Steam purchase or a Steam-managed installation.
Choose the installation route your purchase supports
“Humble Bundle game” does not identify one universal installation method. The files and entitlements depend on the individual purchase. Before changing Deck settings or downloading anything, sign in to your Humble account, open the purchase, and inspect the redemption and download options shown for that title.

- Steam key: Redeem the key to the Steam account you want to use, then find, install, and launch the game from that account’s Steam library.
- Standalone download: If a game build is offered, download and install it in Desktop Mode. Add the installed application to Steam as a non-Steam game if you want a library shortcut for Gaming Mode.
- Another entitlement or no usable Deck build: Follow the title’s instructions. Do not assume a purchase includes a Steam key, a Linux build, a DRM-free installer, or a version that will run on Steam Deck.
A title-specific example from Klei describes downloading a DRM-free client through a Humble Store download page, choosing an operating system, and installing the standalone files. That is an example for Klei’s game, not a guarantee that other Humble purchases offer the same files or steps. Klei’s DRM-free client instructions were updated May 22, 2025.

Understand what each route gives you
| What you need to decide | Steam key | Standalone download |
|---|---|---|
| What to confirm | The purchase includes a redeemable Steam key. | The purchase page offers a build you can use, and you can identify its operating system and installation instructions. |
| Where the game is installed from | Your Steam library. | The Humble or publisher download page and the game’s installer or application. |
| What appears in Steam | A game in the library associated with the account that redeemed the key. | A non-Steam shortcut to an application already installed on the Deck. |
| Downloads and updates | Steam manages the Steam-library installation and its available updates. | The shortcut does not make Steam manage the game’s downloads or updates. Check the title’s publisher or original download source for its update process. |
| Compatibility checks | Check the game’s current Steam Deck rating and test the title itself. | Check the offered build, its operating-system requirements, launcher or DRM needs, and whether any Windows compatibility attempt works. |
| Launching in Gaming Mode | Launch the game from its Steam library page. | Add the installed executable as a non-Steam game, then launch that shortcut. |
Valve explains that adding a non-Steam game adds a shortcut only: it does not enable game updates through Steam or establish the game as proof of ownership for the Steam account. Valve’s instructions for adding non-Steam games cover that distinction.

Redeem a Humble Steam key and install through Steam
- Verify the entitlement. Sign in to Humble and open the purchase’s redemption page. Confirm that a Steam key is actually listed. A Humble purchase is not, by itself, evidence that the game was supplied as a Steam key.
- Redeem the key to the intended account. In the Steam client, use the product-activation option to redeem it. Make sure you are signed in to the account where you want the game to appear. Activating a product and adding a non-Steam shortcut are separate actions: a shortcut does not redeem a key.
- Find the game in the library. After redemption, locate the title in that Steam account’s library and choose Install. Steam downloads the library version; the exact download size and time depend on the title and connection.
- Check the Deck rating before troubleshooting. Review the current Steam Deck compatibility label on the game’s Steam page. Valve uses Verified, Playable, and Unsupported categories; the rating is a guide, not a promise that every account, launcher, or setup will behave identically.
- Launch and test the whole game flow. Check more than the opening screen: try any required launcher or login, reach gameplay, and confirm that the controls work. If the game depends on anti-cheat or another online service, verify that the specific game’s multiplayer features work as expected.
If a redeemed title is missing, first confirm that the key was activated on the account currently open on the Deck. If the purchase page did not supply a key, the Steam-key instructions do not apply; use the available download or other title-specific instructions instead.
Switch to Desktop Mode for a standalone download
Desktop Mode provides a PC-like environment for browsing, downloading, and installing applications. Valve’s path is Steam menu > Power > Switch to Desktop. To return to Gaming Mode, use the desktop shortcut for that purpose. See Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop FAQ for desktop navigation guidance.
You can use the Deck’s controls to operate the desktop: Valve says the right trackpad acts as the primary click and the left trackpad as the secondary click. While Steam is running, Steam+X opens the on-screen keyboard. Some tasks may be easier or may require a physical keyboard and mouse; they are conveniences, not a general requirement for installing a game.

Download and install the standalone build
- Open the title’s download page. In Desktop Mode, use a web browser to sign in to Humble and open the purchase’s download options.
- Choose only a build the page actually offers. Read the listed operating system and any publisher instructions. Do not assume that a Linux version is available, that a Windows installer is DRM-free, or that all purchases provide an installer.
- Download the files and follow the title’s installation instructions. The format and installation process differ by game. A publisher may provide an installer, an application folder, or additional steps. The Klei guide is one example of choosing an operating system and installing a DRM-free client, not a universal Humble workflow.
- Confirm the installed application’s location. Note which application or executable launches the game. You will need to select that installed file when creating the Steam shortcut. If the game’s documentation describes a specific launcher, follow that documentation rather than choosing an unrelated installer or helper file.
- Try the game from Desktop Mode first, if practical. A direct launch helps distinguish an installation problem from a Steam shortcut or Gaming Mode problem. If it fails here, adding it to Steam is unlikely to fix the underlying issue.
For ordinary desktop applications, Valve describes Discover Software Center as installing applications through Flatpak on writable storage, a way to reduce the risk of extra applications being broken by SteamOS updates. That does not mean a game installer should automatically be installed through Discover: use the method documented for the particular game. Avoid system-level changes unless the game’s documented setup requires them and you understand the consequences. Valve warns that software installed outside Flatpak, such as through pacman, may be wiped by a SteamOS update. Valve’s Desktop FAQ explains the desktop environment and this software-installation caveat.
Add the installed game to Steam for Gaming Mode
- Open the desktop Steam client. If it is not already running, open it from the desktop.
- Choose Add a Game > Add a Non-Steam Game. Browse the listed applications or use the file chooser to select the installed game application or executable.
- Confirm the selection and return to the library. The added entry should appear in the desktop Steam library as a non-Steam game. Valve says it will also appear in the Deck interface under the non-Steam tab.
- Return to Gaming Mode and test the entry. Launch the shortcut and check whether the game opens, accepts input, and displays correctly. If you selected the wrong executable, return to Desktop Mode and edit or recreate the shortcut using the application that actually starts the game.
This entry points to a locally installed application; it is not a Steam-store copy. Steam does not take over the standalone game’s updates or turn the shortcut into proof of ownership. Use the publisher’s update instructions or the original download source, and consult the game’s own documentation if an update changes the executable location.
Check compatibility without assuming Proton guarantees a fix
Proton is a compatibility layer that lets many Windows games run on Linux. Whether a particular game works depends on the title and its configuration, including its launcher and DRM. Proton’s general purpose does not establish support for every Humble game, installer, login flow, or online feature. Valve’s Steam Hardware and Proton documentation describes Proton; the relevant test is still the game you intend to play.

- For a Steam-library game: Start with its current Deck rating. If Valve’s troubleshooting guidance applies, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility and try an available Steam Play compatibility tool such as Proton. Forcing a tool can change what Steam installs; Valve notes that it may download the Windows version in a case where only the Linux version had been installed.
- For a standalone Windows game: Add the installed executable as a non-Steam game first. If the game fails to launch, a Proton option in that shortcut’s compatibility settings may be worth trying, but the result varies by title.
- For a standalone Linux build: Check whether the build and its documented dependencies support the Deck’s Linux environment. A non-Steam shortcut does not itself install missing dependencies or guarantee that the application is compatible.
- For a launcher, login, or anti-cheat failure: Look for guidance from that game’s publisher. There is no universal fix established for Humble titles as a group.
Use the compatibility setting as a targeted troubleshooting step, not as a reason to force Proton on every game. If a Steam-library title works better with its default configuration, keep that configuration. If a non-Steam app is not supported or fails under Proton, changing the shortcut does not change the game’s underlying requirements. Valve’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide covers compatibility ratings, troubleshooting, and initial system checks.
Troubleshoot the failure you see
The purchase page has no Steam key
Do not try to redeem a download as a key or assume that a Humble receipt automatically adds a Steam library entry. Recheck the purchase’s available entitlements. If a downloadable build is offered, follow that route; if it is not, use the instructions or support channel for the particular title.
The game will not install or launch from Desktop Mode
Check that you selected the correct operating-system build and followed the publisher’s installation directions. Try launching the installed application directly before creating a Steam shortcut. If the publisher’s instructions call for a dependency or a particular launcher, resolve that requirement using its documentation rather than making unrelated system changes.

The shortcut appears, but the game does not start
Verify that the shortcut points to the installed game application rather than the installer. If the game does launch from Desktop Mode, test the non-Steam shortcut again and consider a Proton compatibility attempt only for a Windows executable or when the game’s guidance supports it. A shortcut is only a launch entry, so it cannot repair a missing installation or bypass a game’s launcher, DRM, or login requirements.
The game starts but controls or performance are poor
Test the controls inside the game and review its settings. For unstable performance, Valve recommends adjusting graphics settings as part of troubleshooting. A compatibility label is not a performance benchmark for every configuration, and no general performance figure applies to all Humble titles.

Install available SteamOS updates and restart the Deck before pursuing more involved troubleshooting. Valve lists updating and restarting among initial troubleshooting steps. If only one title remains affected, use its publisher’s support guidance; if several unrelated parts of the Deck fail, treat that as a system issue rather than a Humble entitlement problem.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Use the right update path after installation
A Steam-key installation appears as a Steam library game, so its Steam-managed download and update path is available. A standalone installation remains maintained through the original download source or the publisher’s workflow. Adding a non-Steam shortcut does not make Steam check for standalone updates, and moving or replacing the installed files may leave the shortcut pointing to an old location. When a standalone game stops launching after an update, check the publisher’s instructions and confirm that the shortcut still targets the current application.
What to keep in mind
The reliable sequence is to identify the entitlement first, install through the matching source, and then test the game on the Deck. A Steam key gives you the Steam-library route; a standalone build requires its own installation and, for Gaming Mode convenience, a non-Steam shortcut. Compatibility depends on the individual title and its dependencies, so verify the game’s current status and test the complete launch and play flow rather than treating any one label or Proton setting as a guarantee.
