For a fast, warm Fyreslayer scheme, shade the skin with undiluted Reikland Fleshshade and build orange hair with two fully dried layers of Fuegan Orange. Add selective highlights for more definition. For flames and magma, make the hottest area the lightest and transition outward through orange and red into darker surrounding material. The skin-and-beard recipe comes from an official Fyreslayers tutorial; the magma approach is a cross-faction visual reference, not a tested Fyreslayers formula.
What you need to know before painting
Fyreslayers put two large, attention-grabbing surfaces close together: warm flesh and orange hair. That makes the order and control of the paint more important than adding many colors. A simple shade-led finish can establish both quickly, while selective highlights and a glaze provide optional extra definition and saturation.

The clearest faction-specific recipe is Tyler Mengel’s official Games Workshop tutorial, From the Mind of Mengel: Fyreslayers, the easy way, published on 12 March 2018. Its paint names and steps are a source-era recipe; current stock, paint availability, and any reformulations are not established here. Treat the colors as the specified starting point, not a claim that they are the only way to paint the faction.
The tutorial begins with a Corax White spray undercoat, applied in multiple thin coats for solid coverage. It then uses Reikland Fleshshade on the skin and two coats of Fuegan Orange on the hair. The remaining example colors are Sotek Green cloth, Doombull Brown straps, Retributor Armor on most gold metal, and Leadbelcher on silver areas. Those are Mengel’s choices for his miniature, not mandatory Fyreslayer colors.

Prepare the miniature and protect the focal areas
Apply the undercoat evenly
Start with the tutorial’s Corax White spray undercoat and aim for complete, even coverage rather than a heavy coat. Mengel’s advice is to use multiple thin coats. The practical purpose is to establish a consistent base before the shade and orange layers; a patchy undercoat can make later coverage less uniform. Let the undercoat dry before moving to the colors.
Block in the other colors carefully
If you want to follow the full example scheme, paint cloth Sotek Green, straps Doombull Brown, gold metal Retributor Armor, and silver areas Leadbelcher. The flesh and hair occupy much of the model, while armor is a smaller area, so keeping metallic paint under control helps preserve the larger focal surfaces.
Take particular care not to brush metallic paint onto skin or hair. Pick out the flesh runes deliberately rather than letting surrounding metallic areas obscure them. In Fyreslayer lore, ur-gold runes are sigils hammered into the warriors’ flesh; they are intentional details on the skin, not stray marks to lose beneath later layers. If you accidentally cover part of a rune, restore its outline before finishing nearby highlights.
Paint the skin with a controlled shade
Apply Reikland Fleshshade in continuous sections
- Work on one natural area at a time, such as a leg, the torso, or the head.
- Apply undiluted Reikland Fleshshade across that area in one continuous pass, following the tutorial’s recipe.
- Keep the application controlled. Avoid loading the surface with excess shade, which can leave unwanted pools as it dries.
- Move to the next natural boundary and repeat, rather than stopping in the middle of a broad area and returning after the first section has begun to dry.
- Let the shade dry before judging the result or adding optional highlights.
Working within natural boundaries helps avoid visible tide marks where a wet edge dries unevenly. The goal is even coverage with recess shading, not a thick layer of wash sitting on the skin. If a pool forms while the shade is still wet, guide the excess away from the area rather than leaving a heavy patch to dry. Do not judge the final contrast until the coat has dried.
Choose the quick finish or add definition
The shade-led skin is the tutorial’s faster tabletop-ready option. For more definition, Mengel adds Flayed One Flesh to muscle edges and raised areas, then uses Pallid Wych Flesh on the most prominent points. Keep those colors selective: the intent is to identify the raised planes, not to cover the shaded skin again.

The tutorial allows these highlights to be a little chunky at this stage. That is useful for an army-level finish where clear separation matters more than tiny transitions. For a character or a model you want to polish further, place the lighter color on fewer, smaller points so it reads as a brighter top highlight rather than a second broad coat.
Mengel also suggests selective Reikland Fleshshade to deepen shadows further. Use it only where more depth is needed; reapplying it everywhere would undo the distinction between the raised highlights and the recesses. The source does not prescribe a fixed number of highlight strokes or a universal placement map, so let the sculpt’s muscles and raised surfaces guide you.

Build an orange beard and hair in two layers
Let the first layer dry completely
- Apply the first layer of Fuegan Orange to the beard and hair, working the paint across the surface rather than allowing it to collect in recesses.
- Wait until the first layer is fully dry.
- Apply a second layer of Fuegan Orange to increase the orange’s vibrancy.
- Let the second layer dry and inspect the color before deciding whether to add the optional glaze.
Mengel chose two coats because one did not give him the vibrancy he wanted. That is a painter’s stated preference for this scheme, not a guarantee that every sculpt or undercoat will look identical. The important process point is to let the first layer dry fully before adding the next; painting over a wet layer can disturb it and make the orange uneven.
This is a quick, shade-based treatment: the orange supplies the main color, while the recesses retain definition. Use the sculpt’s locks and grooves to keep the color readable. If the hair looks flat after two coats, first check that the layers have dried and that the recessed detail remains visible before adding more paint; the documented recipe does not call for a third base coat.
Increase saturation with a glaze
For a more saturated orange while retaining the shading and highlights already in place, the tutorial’s optional step is a 1:1 mix of Lamenters Yellow and Bloodletter, glazed over the hair. A glaze is intended here as a transparent color adjustment, not an opaque replacement coat. Apply it with control so the underlying recesses and raised details remain legible, and let it dry before deciding whether another pass is needed. The source gives the mix ratio but does not specify a number of glaze passes.

Keep the glaze optional. The two Fuegan Orange layers already form the quick finish; the yellow-and-red mixture is for a stronger, more saturated result. On a broad beard, preserve the direction and separation of the sculpted locks as you work. A uniform glaze should enrich the orange without hiding the earlier shading.

Make flames and magma read as hot
Use light for the hottest focal point
The searched official material does not provide a Fyreslayers-specific, step-by-step magma recipe. A useful transferable principle comes from an official Warhammer Community feature about magma Tyranids: the hottest part is the lightest. The painter in that example built from yellows and oranges, introduced hints of red, and used Rhinox Hide on the most raised sections. The project began from Wraithbone and used drybrushing and glazes.
For a Fyreslayer weapon, rune, or lava base, adapt the underlying logic rather than copying the Tyranid recipe as if it were tested on these models:
- Decide where the heat should appear strongest and make that focal area the lightest.
- Transition outward through yellow and orange, using hints of red to deepen the color.
- Keep the surrounding material darker than the hot center so the bright area has contrast.
- Follow the sculpt. A raised weapon edge, carved rune, or channel in a base may direct the visual flow differently from the Tyranid carapace in the example.
The Rhinox Hide detail belongs to that particular Tyranid treatment: it was used on the most raised sections of its sculpt. It is not a universal instruction to paint the hottest part of lava brown, nor is that example a proven Fyreslayers paint sequence. For a Fyreslayer effect, preserve the basic temperature cue—light at the heat source, darker material around it—and adapt any dark accents to the shape and material you are painting.
Keep the effect distinct from the orange beard
Because orange hair is already a major color on the miniature, a flame effect can lose its identity if it becomes one unbroken orange patch. Use the effect’s brightest area and its contrast with the surrounding dark material to signal heat. On a flaming weapon, concentrate the brightest color where the sculpt suggests the hottest point; on a lava base, use the channels and edges to determine where the bright center should travel. These are placement decisions based on the sculpt, not additional paint formulas established by the cited tutorial.

Adjust the scheme without losing its identity
Break up an orange-heavy model
Amy Snuggs’ Lofnir-inspired Fyreslayer army offers one documented way to vary the hair: she used split black-and-orange hair to interrupt the overall orange. This is a visual choice rather than a procedural recipe, so decide which locks should remain orange and which should be dark before painting them. Repeating the same division across a unit can make the variation feel deliberate; using the split selectively can make a character stand apart.
Use the base as a temperature contrast
Snuggs also chose snowy, icy bases to contrast with warm skin and bright orange hair. The cool base gives the warm colors a clearer setting without changing the flesh or beard recipe. If using that approach, keep the contrast in mind when choosing how much orange to add elsewhere: the base and model can provide opposing warm and cool areas, rather than competing for the same visual emphasis.
Her account also singles out the flamestrike poleaxe variants of Hearthguard Berzerkers as enjoyable flaming weapons to paint. That is inspiration for where to use a flame effect, not evidence of a specific recipe for those weapons.
Choose a finish that fits the model and your time
The official tutorial presents the shade-led result as tabletop-ready and treats highlights and glazing as optional ways to add definition or saturation. Use the quick finish when consistency across a unit is the priority. Spend the extra attention on a character, an elite model, or a focal model when you want the skin to have stronger muscle definition or the beard to carry a more intense orange.

Common problems and how to respond
The skin shade dries with dark pools
The tutorial warns against overloading the skin with Reikland Fleshshade. If a wet area has an obvious pool, move excess shade away before it dries. For the next section, use less and complete the area in a continuous pass. If the shade is already dry, reserve any corrective work for the affected area rather than automatically recoating all the skin.
A tide mark appears across the skin
Break the work at a natural boundary such as the leg, torso, or head, and carry the shade across each section in one pass. Stopping in the middle of a broad surface and returning to a partly dried edge is the process risk Mengel’s approach is designed to reduce. Let the area dry before deciding whether a mark needs correction.
The orange looks less vibrant than expected
The official recipe uses two Fuegan Orange layers because Mengel found a single layer insufficiently vibrant for his preference. Make sure the first layer is fully dry before adding the second. If the orange is already shaded and highlighted and you want greater saturation, the optional 1:1 Lamenters Yellow and Bloodletter glaze is the documented next step.

Keep metallic paint away from the skin and hair, and pick out the flesh runes deliberately. Since the runes are described as sigils in the flesh, retain their legibility as you finish the surrounding skin. Avoid trying to solve an obscured rune by spreading metallic paint across a broader area of flesh.
The magma does not look hot
Check the value contrast before adding more colors. The transferable official example makes the hottest area the lightest and sets it against darker material. If the effect reads as a flat orange patch, clarify the intended hot focal point and darken the surrounding contrast according to the sculpt. Do not assume that copying the Tyranid feature’s exact placement or dark raised details will suit a different miniature.
Sources and scope
The skin and beard sequence follows Tyler Mengel’s official Games Workshop tutorial, From the Mind of Mengel: Fyreslayers, the easy way (12 March 2018). Amy Snuggs’ Lofnir-inspired hair and basing choices come from the official showcase An Expert Painter Makes These Fyreslayers Blaze With Inner Warmth (3 March 2022). The magma color principle comes from the cross-faction feature Feel the Heat From These Scorching Magma Tyranids (22 April 2022), while the ur-gold rune context comes from the official faction article With Axe and Flame, the Fyreslayers Explode Into the New Edition (23 June 2021). The magma feature is inspiration, not a Fyreslayers-specific tutorial.
