How to Pair AirPods with an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android Phone

Pair AirPods with an iPhone or iPad by proximity, or with a Mac or Android phone through Bluetooth, using the pairing-mode action for your model.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple AirPods pair with an iPhone or iPad by proximity: turn on Bluetooth, open the case near the device, and follow the prompt. On a Mac or an Android phone, you put the AirPods into pairing mode with a button or gesture that depends on your model, then choose them from the Bluetooth device list. No extra accessory is needed for any of these methods.

Identify your AirPods model first

The Apple and Android steps below differ mainly in which control puts the AirPods into pairing mode. Check your model before you start, because the gesture for one generation does not work on another.

AirPods model Pairing-mode action (case open, AirPods inside) Light to watch for
AirPods (1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation) Hold the setup button on the back of the case for about five seconds Status light flashes white
AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd generation) Hold the setup button on the back of the case for about five seconds Status light flashes white
AirPods 4 or AirPods 5 Double-tap the front of the case Status light flashes white
AirPods Pro 3 Double-tap the front of the case Status light flashes white
AirPods Max Hold the listening-mode button for about five seconds (remove the headphones from the Smart Case first) Status light flashes white

Apple’s guides list iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 or later. If your device runs an older system, menu names and screens may differ slightly, but the pairing logic is the same.

Mac

On a Mac, pairing can start from the setup prompt, but the manual method is the reliable fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on Bluetooth in System Settings.
  2. Open the AirPods case, keep it close to the Mac, and put the AirPods into pairing mode using the action for your model in the table above.
  3. Wait until the status light flashes white.
  4. In System Settings, open Bluetooth, find your AirPods in the device list, and select Connect.

If the AirPods are already set up on an iPhone or iPad signed in with the same Apple Account, they may connect to the Mac without this step. If they do not, choose them from the Sound menu in Control Centre.

Android phone

Android uses standard Bluetooth pairing, so the AirPods are not handled by an Apple setup prompt. The pairing mode steps are the same as for the Mac.

  1. Open the Bluetooth settings on your Android phone and turn Bluetooth on. Apple’s example path is Settings, then Connections, then Bluetooth. Menu names vary by phone maker, so look for the equivalent option if your screens differ.
  2. Keep the AirPods in their case with the lid open, and put them into pairing mode using the action for your model.
  3. Wait until the status light flashes white.
  4. Select the AirPods when they appear in the Bluetooth device list.

Once paired, you can listen to audio and make calls. Siri is not available when the AirPods are connected to a non-Apple device.

Apple AirPods 2 with Charging Case - White (Renewed)
  • Automatically on, automatically connected
  • Easy setup for all your Apple devices
  • Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
  • Double-tap to play or skip forward
  • New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices

Automatic connection between Apple devices

Automatic connection is not the same as initial pairing. After the AirPods are set up with one device, they can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple attaches additional requirements to automatic switching that depend on the AirPods model, the operating system version, and the account setup. If automatic switching does not happen on a particular device, check the requirements in Apple’s support guide for that device rather than assuming the feature is broken.

Troubleshooting when the AirPods do not appear

If the setup card does not appear on an Apple device, or the AirPods are missing from the Bluetooth list on any device, work through these checks in order:

Best Value
Apple AirPods Pro Wireless Earbuds with MagSafe Charging Case (Renewed)
  • Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
  • Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
  • Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
  • Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
  • Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
  • Confirm Bluetooth is turned on for the device you are pairing with.
  • Confirm you know your exact AirPods model. A double-tap on a model that uses the setup button will not enter pairing mode.
  • Put the AirPods into pairing mode again and watch for the status light to flash white. If it does not flash, the AirPods may need a charge.
  • Select the AirPods in the Bluetooth settings of the device. On Apple devices, this is the manual route Apple describes for when the setup prompt does not appear.
  • If the AirPods are still paired to another device, remove them from that device’s Bluetooth list first, then try again.

What a non-Apple connection can and cannot do

AirPods work as ordinary Bluetooth headphones with Android phones and other non-Apple devices, so you can listen to media and take calls. Features that depend on Apple’s ecosystem, including Siri and automatic switching between Apple devices, are not available in that setup. If you plan to use the AirPods with both Apple and Android devices, expect to re-pair them when you switch between the two ecosystems.

Apple’s support guides for pairing with Apple devices and with non-Apple devices are the most reliable sources for exact steps and model requirements.
