Why Survival Game Bases Get Raided—and How to Make Them Harder to Attack

Bases attract attacks for their loot and strategic value. Learn how to check server rules, protect critical mechanics, and prepare for Rust raids or Conan Exiles’ Purge.

Survival-game bases get raided because they hold loot, treasure, or strategically important objects—and attackers may expect the reward to outweigh the effort. The best defenses depend on the game and server: protect the mechanics that matter, reduce easy access to valuable items, and make an attack slower and riskier. No layout makes a base universally raid-proof.

Why attackers target a base

A base can be valuable for what is stored inside or for what it lets its owner control. In Rust, raiders may target the Tool Cupboard because it governs upkeep and nearby building privilege. In Conan Exiles’ redesigned Purge, attackers aim to steal treasure from the hoard. Those examples illustrate different incentives; player raids and game-controlled attacks do not follow one universal ruleset.

There is no established cross-game statistic for how often bases are raided, how much owners typically lose, or how effective a particular defense is. Treat advice as game- and server-specific rather than as a guarantee.

Start with the game and server rules

Before rebuilding or choosing a defense, check whether the threat is player-versus-player (PvP), a scripted event, or both. Servers can differ in whether base damage is enabled, when PvP is allowed, and which settings or mods apply. Compare the actual raid rules, timing, upkeep or decay mechanics, and administrator controls; advice for another server may not apply.

In Conan Exiles, Funcom’s Battle Standard guide describes an item that creates a PvP zone. It does not grant land claim or protect a base. On timed-PvP servers, the zone can be used outside regular PvP hours, while NPCs and wildlife can still deal damage there. A PvP zone is therefore not a general base-safety feature.

Use defenses that address the attacker’s route and reward

Reduce easy access to valuable items

When the game permits it, avoid putting every valuable item in one obvious, easily reached location. Distributing or concealing valuables may reduce the payoff of a straightforward breach, but the cited game mechanics do not establish that hiding or splitting storage will defeat a determined player raid. Check how storage, ownership, and destruction work in your game before relying on this approach.

Protect critical control points

Identify the object that controls upkeep, building access, or ownership, then secure and maintain it. A strategically important component can be a more attractive target than ordinary storage, so protecting the visible loot alone may leave the base vulnerable to a different kind of loss.

Add time, obstacles, and defensive pressure

Where the game supports them, layered routes, defensible chokepoints, traps, and active defenders can make reaching valuable areas slower or more dangerous. They are design options, not a proven formula: effectiveness depends on the game’s mechanics, the server’s settings, and whether you can maintain the defenses.

Rust: keep the Tool Cupboard secure and supplied

According to the official Rust Wiki, a Tool Cupboard (TC) prevents decay and stops unauthorized players from building nearby. The wiki specifically warns that raiders look for it. Upkeep is paid from materials stored in the cupboard, so protecting the TC without keeping it supplied does not solve the upkeep problem.

  • Secure the TC: Treat it as a critical control point, not an ordinary container.
  • Keep upkeep materials stocked: Check the cupboard rather than assuming a protected structure will remain maintained.
  • Account for separate structures: A separate building needs its own cupboard unless it is connected to the protected structure by foundations. External cupboards can also limit unauthorized building around external walls.
  • Understand the limited buffer: If the TC is destroyed while it contains resources, it consumes up to 24 hours of upkeep to delay decay. That buffer may delay decay; it does not prevent entry or protect loot from a raid.

Facepunch’s 2017 post on upkeep design explains the rationale behind upkeep and describes decay progressing from the outside inward. Its numeric rates are historical and configurable, not dependable current settings. The Rust Wiki page itself is marked “A Long Time Ago” for its update date, so verify patch-sensitive behavior in the current game before relying on exact decay timing.

Conan Exiles: prepare for the Purge, not a player raid

The redesigned Purge is a game-controlled event distinct from PvP raiding. Funcom’s Purge Revamp Deep Dive, published September 12, 2023, describes a player-initiated attack: you proclaim your wealth, and a larger hoard raises the challenge. The attackers target the hoard, may carry away treasure, and can use battering rams. Funcom’s phrase for its importance is, “Your personal trove serves as the centerpiece to the purge.”

Build for the event’s approach

Funcom recommends strong walls, funnels, parapets, traps, and thralls assigned to guard doors or gates. These are suggested preparations, not a guarantee against every attack. Leave enough space for the Stygian camp near the base; placement that does not allow for the camp can interfere with the setup.

Keep the path to the hoard valid

The Age of War Chapter 2 update notes say the revised Purge is triggered manually and its difficulty scales with the treasure in the coffer. A valid path must run from outside the base to the hoard and coffer. If that path is blocked or destroyed, the Purge retreats. The notes describe event mechanics, not a rule for player-versus-player raids; later updates may change fine details.

Compare defenses by what they protect

Once you know the server rules, assess a build against the threats it actually faces. Useful questions include:

  • How directly can an attacker reach high-value storage or a critical control object?
  • How many routes lead to those targets, and can defenders cover them?
  • Can traps or NPC defenders be maintained on this server?
  • What upkeep burden does the design create, and can you reliably meet it?
  • For a scripted event, does the layout satisfy that event’s placement and path requirements?

There is no supported cross-game benchmark for the strongest layout, wall health, explosive cost, raid window, or decay timer. Those values depend on the specific game, version, and server configuration.
