Final Fantasy VII Rebirth combines real-time fighting with command-based abilities, a flexible party system, and large regions full of optional activities. For a first run, focus on learning the combat rhythm, keeping a useful spread of abilities in your materia loadout, and exploring at a pace you enjoy. You can start with Rebirth without carrying over a save from Remake.
Can you play Rebirth without playing Remake first?
Yes. PlayStation describes Rebirth as a standalone experience that can be enjoyed as a first entry. The story continues from Final Fantasy VII Remake, so playing that game can provide additional context, but it is not a requirement to understand how to play Rebirth.

Do not expect your character progression to transfer. Director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that each game is balanced independently: “Because of this, each game’s balancing is done independently and a player’s levels and abilities will not carry over from one game to the next.” Prior-save bonuses are separate from carrying over character levels and abilities. Combat mixes real-time movement and attacks with an Active Time Battle (ATB) gauge. Fighting helps build ATB; commands such as abilities, spells, and items spend it. You can switch characters instantly, so take direct control of different party members rather than expecting the AI to make every tactical choice. Equipment and materia influence stats, skills, and the abilities available to each character. PlayStation’s game page describes the combat and customization systems.

Use a simple combat loop
- Start with real-time actions. Move, attack, and defend while watching how the enemy behaves.
- Build ATB through fighting. When a character has a charge, spend it on a command that fits the moment: an ability, spell, item, or other available option.
- Switch characters deliberately. Try each active party member to learn what they contribute and to make tactical decisions directly.
- Adjust to the encounter. Change your commands or materia when a fight makes a gap in your options clear; there is no need to settle on one setup for every battle.
Try Classic mode if you prefer commands
Classic mode automates real-time attacking and defending while leaving command choices to you. It offers a more menu-led way to engage with the same combat system, which may suit players who would rather concentrate on choosing abilities than managing every action in real time.
Learn with tutorials and practice
Use the in-game manual and tutorial battles to get familiar with controls and combat basics. The specialist beginner guide also recommends Chadley’s VR tutorials as a place to practice. It advises blocking and using character switching and Synergy Skills to respond to pressure or reach distant and airborne enemies; treat those as practical suggestions to try, not rules that apply identically to every fight. How Synergy Skills and Abilities work
Synergy is a paired-character system. Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities let characters combine actions, adding options beyond their individual commands. Hamaguchi says Synergy commands and abilities use a gauge charge, and that skill trees can unlock abilities. Which options you can use depends on the characters and unlocks available to you, so explore the choices your current party actually has rather than assuming every pairing is available immediately. When a paired action is available, consider whether its effect suits the situation and whether spending the charge is worthwhile now. You do not need to build the whole party around Synergy: treat it as another tool to learn alongside switching characters and spending ATB.

Build a flexible early party and materia loadout
Rebirth offers several ways to customize a character, including weapons, armor, accessories, materia, skill trees, and party pairings. That flexibility makes a universal “best party” a poor starting point: the useful choice depends on the encounter, your available unlocks, and how you like to play.
Cover basic needs before specializing
- Keep healing available. Make sure your group has a way to respond when characters need recovery.
- Bring elemental options. Keep spells or other tools that let you respond to enemy or encounter demands, then change them when needed.
- Learn each character’s role. Switch between party members and see which abilities, equipment, and pairings feel useful to you.
- Make one adjustment at a time. If a fight is difficult, identify what you lacked—such as recovery or a particular kind of attack—and adjust the equipment or materia that addresses it.
These are adaptable starting principles, not a tested optimal build. Materia changes a character’s available abilities and toolkit; equipment and skill-tree choices add further ways to tailor the party. A straightforward loadout is easier to understand and modify than trying to configure every character for every possibility at once.

How much should you explore?
Exploration is a major part of Rebirth, but clearing every marker is not a prerequisite for following the main story. Regions offer optional activities, including quests, battles, and minigames. Choose the activities that appeal to you or help your party, and continue the main quest when you would rather move on.

Use regional chocobos to reach more of the world
Chocobos differ by region and can provide traversal abilities suited to that area. Hamaguchi gives mountain chocobos that climb sheer cliffs and sky chocobos that fly as examples. If a route seems inaccessible, pay attention to the local chocobo and the terrain rather than assuming every mount works the same way.
Make optional gathering useful
The specialist beginner guide recommends collecting materials while riding chocobos and crafting as you gather, noting that some crafted consumables can help early on. This is optional support, not a requirement to stop for every material cluster. The same guide cautions that Magnify’s value changes with progression, so avoid treating it as an automatic early-game choice without considering your current setup.
Choose a pace that fits your first run
If you want to stay focused on the story, complete the regional activities that interest you and leave the rest for another time. If exploring is part of the appeal, quests, minigames, optional battles, and traversal routes provide reasons to spend longer in each region. There is no need to treat the optional map content as a checklist before you are allowed to continue.
