To pair a replacement remote with a Google TV Streamer that is already set up, turn on the streamer, hold the button on its back for 5–10 seconds to start Pairing Mode, then insert two AAA batteries in the replacement Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. It usually pairs automatically. If it does not, follow the instructions on your TV or hold Back and Home on the remote for 3 seconds.
Pair a replacement remote with an already-set-up Google TV Streamer
- Turn on the Google TV Streamer and switch your TV to the HDMI input showing its screen.
- Press and hold the physical button on the back of the streamer for 5–10 seconds. This starts Pairing Mode.
- Insert two AAA batteries in the replacement Google TV Streamer Voice Remote.
- Wait for the remote to pair. Google says it pairs automatically in most cases.
- If it does not pair automatically, follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted to pair manually, hold Back and Home on the remote for 3 seconds.
These steps follow Google’s replacement Voice Remote instructions, which cover both Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer. They document the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote; they do not establish that every third-party remote is compatible.

Replacement pairing is different from first-time setup
If you are setting up the Google TV Streamer for the first time, the remote usually pairs automatically. When the TV displays “Start pairing,” hold Back and Home until the remote’s light starts to pulse. That is the initial-setup instruction, not the replacement procedure for a streamer that has already been set up. See Google’s first-time setup guide.

Pairing connects the remote to the streamer. Configuring its power, volume, and input buttons to control a TV, receiver, or soundbar is a separate step. On the streamer, go to Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons and follow the prompts. Control compatibility varies, and Google notes that the remote cannot control power or input on some models. Details are in Google’s remote-button setup guide.

Use your phone as a temporary remote
If you need to navigate the streamer while sorting out the physical remote, Google documents using the Google Home app or Google TV app as a virtual remote. The apps have their own connection and device requirements, so they may not work in every setup. See Google’s phone-remote instructions.
