Pack for changing conditions, not a guaranteed fall temperature: give each child a removable warm layer, rain protection, comfortable footwear and a dry change of clothes, then tailor the day bag to whether you are stopping roadside or hiking. Check the destination forecast, road conditions and park services shortly before leaving; Vermont’s weather, terrain and facilities vary by date and place.
What should I pack for Vermont in the fall?
Use a flexible checklist rather than planning around a single expected temperature. Vermont’s Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation advises visitors to check the latest weather and bring layers, noting that mountain weather can be wild. Conditions depend on your travel date, elevation and destination, so check the forecast for the places you will actually visit.

- Wear or pack: a comfortable base layer and an insulating layer that can be added or removed.
- Bring rain protection: a kids’ rain jacket is useful when showers are possible. Pack a spare set of clothes and socks, particularly for children likely to get wet or muddy. Vermont Emergency Management includes rain gear, boots and extra clothes in winter vehicle-preparedness guidance; these are sensible family contingencies, not a fall-specific requirement. Vermont Emergency Management’s vehicle preparedness guidance.
- Choose footwear for the activity: comfortable shoes may suit a short roadside stop; a trail calls for footwear appropriate to its conditions and your child’s ability.
- Adjust for the forecast: add a warm hat or other comfort layers if the date-specific forecast calls for them. There is no universal temperature threshold that fits every Vermont destination or day.
What should kids wear for leaf peeping?
Dress children so they can stay comfortable if the weather changes or the outing takes longer than expected. A removable insulating layer over a comfortable base layer makes it easier to adapt than relying on one heavy outfit. Keep rain protection and dry socks accessible, rather than buried under luggage. For a hike, choose footwear based on the route and the child’s experience; some Vermont mountain trails are rugged and steep.
What belongs in the day bag?
Keep items needed during a walk or outdoor stop together, separate from the larger contingencies in the car.

What should we keep in the car for a Vermont foliage trip?
Use the car as a backup for items that are bulky or needed only if plans change: spare clothes and socks, rain gear, boots, a flashlight, a phone charger and non-perishable food. These can make an unexpected delay or a wet stop easier to manage. Vermont Emergency Management’s winter car-kit advice is designed for difficult winter driving, so its emergency recommendations should not be mistaken for a fall-specific packing mandate. Before setting out, check weather for the destination and current road conditions. The Vermont Agency of Transportation directs travelers to New England 511 for up-to-date road weather information and cameras. In rural areas, GPS may work less reliably; verify directions with an official map or local directions rather than assuming a phone route will be enough. Vermont travel information.

How does the plan change for a hike versus a roadside stop?
A scenic pull-off and a trail outing have different demands. Use these checks to decide how much to carry and what to verify before leaving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Consideration | Roadside foliage stop | Hike |
|---|---|---|
| Walking and effort | Check how far the stop requires walking and whether the surface suits the children. | Check trail distance, difficulty and conditions against the family’s ability; some mountain routes are rugged and steep. |
| Weather exposure | Bring a layer and rain protection for time outdoors. | Plan for weather and exposure along the route, including changes associated with elevation. |
| Services | Check what facilities are actually available at the stop. | Confirm services at the trailhead or park; do not assume bathrooms or other facilities are open. |
| Navigation and communication | Save or verify directions before driving into rural areas. | Carry a map or offline route information and do not rely on cell service alone. |
Vermont’s recreation guidance recommends choosing trails suited to your ability, knowing where you are going and planning for weather. This checklist helps match the outing to the family; it is not a ranking of particular trails or parks. Vermont State Parks recreation safety guidance.

What should we check before choosing a park or date?
Do not assume a park’s hours, services or operating season from a past visit: state park dates and services vary. Check the specific park’s current information for hours, facilities and any reservation requirements, and verify weekend availability if your plans depend on a stay. The state promotes checking availability for fall foliage getaways, while park operating seasons do not necessarily extend through all of autumn. October is described in Vermont’s official tourism visitor-tracking report as a month for foliage-focused visitors, with destinations across multiple regions. That broad pattern does not predict peak color for a particular town or week.
