If Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart stutters or takes unusually long to load on PS5, start by updating the game and console, then quit and relaunch the game or reload your last checkpoint. These are low-risk checks, not guaranteed fixes: official support guidance does not identify a specific current Rift Apart stuttering or long-loading defect or promise that any step will resolve it.
Start with updates and a clean relaunch
Update Rift Apart and PS5 system software
- Check for a game update: From the PS5 home screen, highlight Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, press the options button, and select Check for Update.
- Check for system software updates: Use the PS5 system software update option in Settings. PlayStation and Insomniac both recommend keeping the game and console updated when troubleshooting game problems. See PlayStation’s update instructions and Insomniac’s frequent-crash guidance.
- Quit and relaunch: Close the game fully, start it again, and see whether the symptom remains.
- Reload your previous checkpoint: If the slowdown or stutter began during a particular section, try loading the previous checkpoint. Insomniac Games Support says, “Most issues can be resolved by reloading the previous checkpoint or quitting and relaunching the game.” This is general game-issue guidance, not a specific guarantee about stuttering or loading in Rift Apart; see Insomniac’s ticket guidance.
Test graphics and display settings methodically
Change one setting at a time and replay the same area or loading sequence, if you can. That makes it easier to tell whether a change coincides with a difference. Insomniac recommends testing Performance and Fidelity modes, and temporarily disabling VRR and HDR when troubleshooting frequent crashes. Those recommendations are diagnostic checks—not a documented cure for Rift Apart stuttering or poor frame pacing.

- Try the other available rendering mode, Performance or Fidelity, and compare the same scene.
- To test VRR or HDR, open Settings > Screen and Video on the PS5 and temporarily switch off one feature at a time.
- If a test makes no difference, restore your preferred settings. Avoid changing several display options at once, since that obscures which change may matter.
Insomniac’s recommendations appear in its frequent-crash troubleshooting article; they are not stated as a fix for this particular symptom.

Preserve progress before save troubleshooting
If the problem repeatedly appears near a saved point, try a manual save and load it, where possible. Insomniac also says that auto-backup saves can be accessed from the load section after selecting a save slot on the game’s main menu. Do not delete your primary save as a troubleshooting experiment. These save suggestions come from Insomniac’s crash guidance and its ticket guidance.

Move the game from USB extended storage if applicable
If Rift Apart is installed on USB extended storage, PlayStation’s troubleshooting for games that will not start recommends moving it to the PS5’s internal storage. This is a reasonable platform-level check if you are also having start or installation trouble, but PlayStation does not say it will shorten Rift Apart loading times or fix stutter. Follow PlayStation’s game-start troubleshooting steps.
Reinstall only after simpler checks fail
If the issue continues, reinstalling the game is a later troubleshooting option: Insomniac mentions it for consistent crashes, and PlayStation recommends deleting and reinstalling for some start or update problems. Before deleting or changing saved data, confirm that your saves are backed up through a method available to you. Use PS5 Safe Mode carefully
PlayStation lists two Safe Mode options that may be relevant to system feature problems or performance drops: Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database. Cache clearing addresses system-software cache; rebuilding scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. Neither is documented as a Rift Apart-specific stuttering fix.
- Read PlayStation’s Safe Mode instructions before starting.
- Back up important data to USB or cloud storage before selecting Safe Mode options, as PlayStation warns that some options can cause data loss.
- Choose only the option you intend to use. Clearing cache, rebuilding the database, resetting the console, and reinstalling system software are different actions; a reset or system-software reinstallation is not a routine early troubleshooting step.
When to contact support
If the symptom persists, note any error code, what happens, and the exact steps that reproduce it. A screenshot or short video may also help if you can capture one. Use the support channel that best fits what you are seeing:

Stuttering by itself does not establish that the console has a hardware fault. If the PS5 warns that it is overheating or you cannot play at all, Insomniac Games Support advises contacting PlayStation Support promptly for further investigation.
