Pack the things you’ll need during transit in top-access or outer pockets, group the rest in cubes or pouches, and place heavier items close to your back. This layout makes essentials easier to retrieve without sacrificing a stable, organized main compartment.
Start with what you will actually use
Before packing, make a short list based on your activities, climate, laundry access, and the airline’s carry-on rules. Lay everything out so you can spot unnecessary extras before they go into the bag. The Victorinox packing guide recommends planning around the trip rather than packing indiscriminately.

Separate items you may need while travelling from items that can stay packed until you arrive. Your transit list might include travel documents, a phone and earbuds, snacks, and a reusable water bottle. Create a quick-access zone
Put frequently used items in a top pocket, an outer pocket, or another compartment you can reach without unpacking the main section. Keep documents together and place small items such as earbuds where they cannot disappear beneath larger gear. Think of this as a boundary: items for use during transit stay outside clothing cubes and deep in-bag storage. Victorinox notes that “Quick access saves time at airports, train stations, and security checkpoints.” The practical benefit is avoiding a full unpack when you need one small item.
Group the rest with cubes and pouches
Use packing cubes to separate clothing by category, outfit, or day. Smaller pouches can corral cables, accessories, and toiletries. These organizers are optional, but assigning each group a place makes it easier to find things without rummaging. Keep the quick-access zone clear rather than putting transit essentials inside a cube.

For casual clothes such as T-shirts, underwear, and lightweight pants, Victorinox suggests rolling garments and placing them along the edges of the main compartment. It recommends folding structured pieces such as blazers and dress shirts. This is a packing approach, not a guarantee that rolling saves space or prevents wrinkles for every fabric.

Place weight close to your back
Put heavier items close to the back panel rather than at the front of the bag. Victorinox names shoes, tech gear, and toiletries as examples of items to position near the back, with lighter items toward the front and top. Use compression straps, if your backpack has them, to reduce shifting.
For larger backpacks, Deuter’s packing advice also places heavier gear close to the back and around shoulder height. That guidance is specifically framed for larger backpacks; it is not a universal placement rule for every travel bag or load.

Choose an opening that suits how you retrieve things
Backpack openings change what you can reach and see. A top loader can be convenient to access while the bag remains upright, but an item near the bottom may require moving or removing what is above it. A clamshell opening exposes more of the main compartment at once, making contents easier to view when the bag is opened flat. Neither design is best for everyone; compare its access pattern and pocket locations with the way you expect to use the bag. Nike’s travel backpack guide discusses these opening styles.

Check the carry-on rule for your itinerary
Do not assume that a general bag-size guide applies to every flight. Carry-on limits vary by airline, and the relevant rule is the carrier’s current requirement for your itinerary. Check the airline directly before you travel, then confirm that the backpack’s packed dimensions comply; a bag can become larger when full.

A quick packing sequence
- List and edit: Make a trip-specific list, then remove items you do not need for the activities, climate, or laundry situation.
- Set aside transit essentials: Gather documents, phone, earbuds, snacks, water, and any applicable medicines or charging gear.
- Organize the main compartment: Group clothes in cubes and small loose items in pouches; roll casual garments or fold structured ones as appropriate.
- Load the weight: Position heavier gear near the back panel and lighter items toward the front and top; secure the load with compression straps if available.
- Pack for retrieval: Put transit essentials in top or outer pockets, and check that you can reach them without digging through clothing.
