How to Overlay Songs on Samsung Galaxy Clips in Gallery or Studio

On most Samsung Galaxy phones, the quickest way to put music over a video is through Gallery. Select the clip, open the edit, movie, or Studio tool, tap the audio or musical-note control, choose a soundtrack or a file stored on the phone, adjust the original video sound, then export a new copy. The exact button names depend on the Galaxy model and One UI version.

For a single clip, Gallery’s movie editor is usually enough. For several clips, layered elements, or a project you want to reopen later, use Samsung’s Studio timeline. If a downloaded song does not appear, first transfer it to the phone and locate it with Samsung Music or My Files; an audio file being on another device or in a streaming app does not make it available to the editor.

Add music in Samsung Gallery

The native Gallery workflow requires no extra editing app and is the best starting point for a quick soundtrack. It can combine one video or several selected clips, depending on the editor installed on your phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Gallery. Find the video you want to edit. To make a montage, select multiple clips instead of opening only one.
  2. Open the video editor. Tap the edit icon, a movie or “Create movie” option, or the Studio entry shown by your phone. Samsung has changed these labels across Galaxy models and One UI releases.
  3. Find the timeline’s audio control. Look for a musical-note, speaker, or Audio button. In Samsung’s earlier documented workflow, the path is Gallery, select media, Create movie, then tap the musical-note icon.
  4. Choose the source. Select an available soundtrack, or use the file picker/import option to browse audio stored on the device.
  5. Place and trim the music. If the editor exposes a timeline, drag the audio to the point where it should begin and trim its end to match the video. A song longer than the video may be cut automatically, but check the ending yourself.
  6. Set the two volume levels. Lower the video’s original sound when the music is the focus; retain some original audio when speech, ambient sound, or a natural reaction matters.
  7. Preview more than the opening. Listen at the beginning, somewhere in the middle, and at the final transition. A soundtrack can start correctly but drift, stop early, or overpower speech later.
  8. Save or export. Export a new copy after checking the preview. Keep the original video if you may want to change the soundtrack or volume later.

Samsung’s earlier instructions state: “To add music, tap the musical note on the timeline and choose the song you want to use.”

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the different Gallery labels mean

  • Edit: Opens the single-video editor on some models. Audio controls may be inside a menu represented by three dots or a musical note.
  • Create movie: Samsung’s older, clip-oriented movie maker. It is suited to combining selected media and adding one soundtrack.
  • Studio: Samsung’s project-based editor in newer One UI versions. It provides a timeline, multiple clips, layered objects, and saved projects that can be reopened.
  • Movie maker in the share sheet: Some phones show a movie option only after you select media and tap More. If you cannot see an edit button on the open video, return to the Gallery grid and select the file first.

These labels are not interchangeable across every Galaxy phone. A missing Studio button does not necessarily indicate a fault; the device, regional software build, or One UI version may provide only the simpler movie editor.

Use Studio for a multi-clip project

Studio is the better native option when the video contains several scenes, text or stickers, or work you need to pause and continue later. Samsung describes it as a timeline editor available from the Gallery drawer, with support for multiple clips and layered objects.

  1. Open Gallery and open the drawer or menu that contains Studio. On some phones you reach it by selecting media first.
  2. Create a new project and add the clips in the order you want them to play. Reorder clips on the timeline before adding music so that the soundtrack is timed to the final sequence.
  3. Tap the audio or musical-note control. Choose a built-in soundtrack or import a local audio file through the file picker.
  4. Use the timeline to position the song under the correct scene. Trim the beginning and end, and split or reposition clips if a musical change should coincide with a cut.
  5. Add any layered objects, such as titles or stickers, after the basic timing is correct. Layers can change what the viewer hears and sees at a given moment, so preview with all layers enabled.
  6. Save the project before exporting. A saved Studio project is useful when you expect to revise the soundtrack, but the exported video is the file you upload or share.

Studio and the older Create movie tool can coexist in the same Gallery installation. Choose the simpler tool for a one-off soundtrack and Studio when timeline precision or resumable projects is important.

Put a downloaded song on the phone first

The editor can select files stored on the Galaxy phone; it cannot normally use a track that exists only on a computer, a USB drive that is not connected, or inside a streaming service’s protected cache. Transfer an audio file before opening the editor.

Transfer from a computer

  1. Connect the Galaxy phone or tablet to the computer with a USB cable that supports data, not charging only.
  2. Unlock the phone and choose the USB notification that allows File transfer or Transferring files.
  3. On the computer, open the phone’s internal storage and copy the owned or licensed audio file into a recognizable folder such as Music or Download.
  4. Eject the phone safely, then open Samsung Music or My Files on the Galaxy device. Confirm that the file appears and plays before returning to Gallery.
  5. In Gallery or Studio, choose the audio import/file-picker option and browse to that folder.

Samsung documents this computer-to-Galaxy transfer process for music. If the file is visible in My Files but not in the editor, confirm that the editor’s picker is showing internal storage rather than only a curated soundtrack list.

Transfer with a USB-C flash drive

A compatible USB-C flash drive can move an owned track without cloud storage. Connect the drive, open My Files, copy the audio into internal storage, and disconnect the drive before editing. Compatibility depends on the Galaxy model’s USB-C/OTG support and the drive’s file system; check those specifications before relying on this method. The song must be copied locally because Gallery’s editor may not retain access to a removable drive after it is unplugged.

When the file still does not appear

  • Check the extension and playback. A file that My Files cannot play may use an unsupported or damaged format.
  • Move the file from an obscure app folder to Music or Download, then reopen Gallery so its media index can refresh.
  • Verify that you copied the actual audio file rather than a shortcut, playlist entry, or streaming-service download protected by digital rights management.
  • Close and reopen the editor after the transfer. Some pickers list files only when the project is created or when the app rescans storage.
  • Make sure the file is not hidden by a folder rule or a filename beginning with a period in My Files.

Balance music and original video sound

Adding a song is only half of the edit. A soundtrack that is technically present can still make speech unintelligible or remove the atmosphere that makes a clip useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the intended listening experience

  • Music-led montage: Reduce the original clip volume substantially and let the soundtrack carry the sequence.
  • Speech or instructions: Keep the original audio prominent and lower the music enough that every word remains clear.
  • Live event or travel clip: Keep some ambient sound, using music as a background layer rather than replacing the scene.

Check transitions

Preview the first seconds to catch an abrupt start, the middle to catch a volume clash, and the final seconds to catch a song that ends before the picture. If the editor offers fades, use them at the beginning and end; otherwise trim at a natural musical boundary. Listen through the phone speaker and headphones because bass and speech balance can change between playback systems.

Export a separate copy

Use the editor’s Save, Export, or Save as new video command. Do not overwrite the camera original unless you are certain you will never need its unedited audio. A separate export lets you create another version with a different song or a different volume mix.

Gallery, Studio, or a third-party editor?

The choice depends on how much control the project requires and where the music comes from.

Workflow Best for Timeline and layers Local-file access Resume later License clarity
Gallery movie/Create movie One clip or a short montage Basic clip order and soundtrack controls; exact tools vary by model Can import audio stored on the phone when the picker exposes it Usually designed for quick export rather than a long-running project You must verify the source and rights for any selected song
Samsung Studio Several clips, layered objects, and projects that need revision Project timeline with multiple clips and layers Uses available device files plus any soundtrack choices shown by the app Yes; projects can be saved and reopened You must verify the source and rights for any selected song
CapCut A fuller third-party timeline and more elaborate editing controls More extensive timeline features than a quick Gallery edit; exact controls depend on the current app version Can offer device-media import, subject to Android permissions and the app’s current interface Project saving is part of the app workflow Read the current agreement and library terms; rights are not automatically cleared for every song

Use Gallery when speed matters and the soundtrack is simple. Move to Studio when the project has several clips or layers. Consider CapCut only when the native tools cannot provide the timeline control you need, and confirm the music license before publishing.

Using CapCut without assuming the music is cleared

A third-party editor can provide a deeper timeline, but installing it does not grant blanket permission to use every song. Its agreement describes a library containing selected recordings and distinguishes those materials from music supplied by the user. A track imported from your phone remains your responsibility: check whether you have synchronization, public-performance, and platform-distribution rights for the intended use.

  1. Start a project with the clips you intend to publish.
  2. Use the app’s audio import or library function to add a soundtrack, checking whether the item is marked as licensed for your intended use.
  3. Keep the original audio and music on separate controls where available, then preview speech and transitions.
  4. Read the current terms for the selected library item before export, especially for commercial, monetized, or public uploads.
  5. Keep proof of permission, a license receipt, or the creation record for music you made yourself.

Interface names and licensing conditions can change, so rely on the terms displayed in the current app rather than an old tutorial.

Music rights you need before posting

Possessing an MP3 or being able to import it is a technical fact, not proof that you may publish the finished video. A public upload can involve several rights, including the right to synchronize music with moving images, the right to perform it publicly, and permission for the platform or territory where you will distribute the video.

  • Safest sources: music you composed and recorded, music commissioned with written rights, or a license that explicitly covers video synchronization and your intended platforms and territories.
  • Read in-app library terms: Check whether a soundtrack is limited to personal use, a particular platform, a region, or a defined period.
  • Do not equate purchase with permission: Buying or downloading a song generally gives you a file for listening; it does not automatically grant public-video rights.
  • Keep records: Save licenses, invoices, permission messages, and the track version used in the export.
  • Test before publishing: Play the exported file with both audio layers and verify that the rights match the account, territory, and platform where it will appear.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
No musical-note or Audio button The phone opened a basic video editor, or the control is inside Studio or More Return to Gallery, select the media, and look for Create movie or Studio. Update your mental path for the labels shown on that Galaxy model; names vary by One UI version.
The song is missing from the picker The file is not stored locally, is in an app-protected cache, or has not been indexed Copy it to Music or Download with a data USB connection or compatible USB-C drive, confirm it plays in My Files or Samsung Music, then reopen the editor.
The file appears in My Files but not Gallery The editor is showing only its own soundtrack list or has not rescanned storage Use the import/file-picker option rather than the curated list, close and reopen the project, and place the file in a standard local folder.
Music is louder than speech The original and added tracks are both at full level Lower the soundtrack, retain the original voice track, and preview with phone speakers and headphones.
Music stops before the video ends The selected song is shorter than the final sequence or was trimmed accidentally Extend or replace the soundtrack where the editor permits, or trim the video to a natural musical ending. Preview the last seconds before export.
Edits disappear after leaving The quick movie tool was closed without saving, or the export was not completed Use Studio for a project you expect to revisit, save the project, and export a separate finished copy.
Exported video has no music The soundtrack was muted, the preview was not rendered, or the export used an earlier project state Reopen the saved project, confirm the audio track is enabled, preview at several points, and export again without deleting the original.

A reliable publishing checklist

  1. Confirm the final clip order and that every intended scene is present.
  2. Listen at the opening, middle, and ending with the original audio and soundtrack enabled.
  3. Check that dialogue, warnings, and important natural sounds are understandable.
  4. Verify that the song is stored locally and that the editor actually included it in the exported file.
  5. Confirm the music license covers synchronization, the platform, the territory, and any commercial or monetized use.
  6. Save the project or keep the source video so you can make a rights or volume correction without starting over.
