To find recipes by what you have on hand, store each recipe with its ingredients in a dedicated, searchable ingredients field. Use broad collections—such as weeknight dinners or vegetarian meals—for browsing, and test ingredient search on a few recipes before importing your whole cookbook archive.
Choose a recipe manager that searches ingredients
Check the help guide for the specific app and device you plan to use; feature descriptions can differ by platform. Paprika’s Windows guide explains how to choose search fields, including ingredients, and search for multiple ingredients separated by commas. AnyList and Recipe Keeper also describe searching recipes by ingredient.

Keep ingredients in the ingredients field
Give each recipe a clear name and enter its ingredients in the app’s dedicated ingredients field. During import or manual entry, check where the ingredients landed. If a search is configured to check the ingredients field, text saved only in a note or description may not be returned; apps can differ in which fields they index.

Use consistent wording for common ingredients
Choose familiar terms and use them consistently—for example, decide whether your collection will say “scallion” or “green onion.” Product pages confirm ingredient lookup, but they do not establish how each app handles synonyms, plural forms, or spelling variants. Test the words you commonly use rather than assuming the app will treat them as equivalent.
Test a small sample before importing everything
- Add several representative recipes, making sure each has a populated ingredients field.
- Search for one ingredient you know appears in a recipe and confirm that recipe is returned.
- Where supported, try a comma-separated combination of ingredients and check which matching recipes appear.
- If a recipe is missing, inspect its ingredient field and the app’s selected search fields before importing more.
Organize for browsing with broad collections
Collections and categories help when you know the kind of meal you want but not the exact recipe. Useful groupings include meal type, occasion, or dietary pattern. AnyList says a recipe can belong to multiple custom collections; Paprika describes categories and subcategories. Avoid making a separate category for every ingredient: ingredient search is better suited to questions like “What can I make with spinach?”
