Nodemailer’s stream transport and Ethereal let you inspect messages without delivering them to real recipients; a successful sendMail() call alone does not prove inbox placement or consistent rendering.
What each kind of email test proves
Template rendering, message assembly, SMTP acceptance, and inbox placement are separate checks. Choose a test that answers the question you have rather than treating one successful send as proof of the whole chain.

| Approach | What it exercises | How you inspect it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Render-only unit test | Template output and application data mapping | Assertions over generated HTML and text | Does not exercise message assembly or SMTP. |
| Nodemailer stream transport | Generation of the complete RFC 822 message | Inspect the returned message output | Does not connect to or exercise a remote SMTP server. Nodemailer stream transport documentation. |
| Ethereal | Outbound SMTP submission into a capture service | Browser preview and message details | Captured messages are not delivered to the real recipient; public inbound email is disabled by default. Nodemailer Ethereal guide and Ethereal help. |
| Mailpit | Application integration and SMTP response handling | API access to rendered HTML or text | Requires running or accessing the service. Mailpit integration testing documentation. |
| Real SMTP or API provider | Connection to and submission through the configured provider | Provider-specific logs and controlled inbox observation | Successful submission still does not guarantee inbox placement or consistent rendering. See Nodemailer and Resend’s Express sending guide. |
How to test the template without sending a real email
Render with realistic, synthetic data
Call your application’s template-rendering function with representative values that do not expose customer information. Check the fields that matter: names, order or account details, conditional copy, and the destination URLs in important links. If your product supports a plain-text alternative, assert its essential content too.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Keep fixtures and snapshots focused on meaningful copy and data. A snapshot of every markup detail can become noisy when whitespace or incidental HTML changes, even though the email still says the right thing. These are practical testing choices; no particular templating library or test framework is required by the transport documentation.

Generate the complete message locally
When template checks are not enough, Nodemailer’s stream transport generates the complete RFC 822-formatted message without sending it to a remote mail server. Use it to inspect assembled headers, body parts, and other message output in an automated test without adding a network dependency. It tests message generation, not SMTP connectivity.
How to preview a Nodemailer email with Ethereal
Nodemailer describes Ethereal as “a free fake SMTP service designed for testing Nodemailer and other email-sending applications.” It captures SMTP submissions for browser inspection; it does not deliver the message to the address in the to field.

- Create a test account using the flow in the Nodemailer Ethereal guide.
- Configure a Nodemailer SMTP transporter with the test account credentials and send the message with
sendMail(). - Pass the returned message information to
nodemailer.getTestMessageUrl(info)to obtain the preview URL. - Open the preview to inspect headers, HTML and text bodies, attachments, and raw message source.
Ethereal’s help page currently lists smtp.ethereal.email on port 587 with STARTTLS. Inbound email is disabled by default for public accounts; the help page describes inbound access as requiring an API key under specified subscription conditions. Do not assume a public Ethereal account can test replies or other inbound workflows. Check the current Ethereal help page for its access policy.
How to test SMTP integration and failure handling
Use a local or controlled SMTP capture service
Mailpit documents integration testing that retrieves rendered HTML or text through its API and uses its Chaos feature to simulate unexpected SMTP responses. That makes it useful when a test needs to verify how the application behaves after more than simple message acceptance—for example, when the SMTP server responds unexpectedly. It does require a running or accessible Mailpit service.

Check the real provider connection separately
Nodemailer documents transporter.verify() as a connection and configuration check, while transporter.sendMail() submits a message. Use verification to catch issues connecting to the configured transport; use a controlled test recipient and a provider configured for testing when checking a real submission. Neither a successful verification nor an accepted submission establishes that a message will land in the inbox. A provider integration guide, such as Resend’s Node.js Express guide, describes one sending setup; it does not make inbox placement a guaranteed outcome.
Choose the right test for your workflow
- Fast, repeatable CI checks: render-only assertions catch template and data-mapping regressions; stream transport adds inspection of assembled message output without contacting remote SMTP.
- Human visual review: Ethereal provides a browser preview of a captured outbound message, but it is not a delivery to a real inbox.
- SMTP integration and error paths: Mailpit can expose captured content through its API and simulate unexpected SMTP responses.
- Provider-specific behavior: test the configured real service separately with controlled recipients. Treat provider acceptance, inbox placement, and how a particular mail client renders the email as distinct observations.
Nodemailer’s testing guide compares Ethereal with services including Mailtrap, Mailhog, and real SMTP; Mailpit documents a separate integration-testing workflow. The useful comparison is what each setup exercises: network use, repeatability in CI, raw-message inspection, need for a browser preview, and whether failure responses are in scope. See the Nodemailer guide and Mailpit integration documentation.

Check Node.js and Nodemailer compatibility
Nodemailer’s homepage currently states that version 10 requires Node.js 20 or later and recommends the 9.x line for older Node.js versions. This is version-sensitive: check the requirements for the Nodemailer version installed in your project and the Node.js runtime used locally and in CI. See the Nodemailer homepage. The cited software documentation is not specific to a jurisdiction.
