Which controller is a better fit for a long session?
Pick the Pro Controller for a separate controller
If you prefer a conventional, separate controller for docked or tabletop play, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the direct option. Nintendo Australia lists a 1300 mAh lithium-ion battery and approximately 40 hours of battery life, with charging by the specified AC adapter or included USB charging cable. The figure is Nintendo’s published approximation; it does not guarantee a particular runtime in your conditions. Comfort is personal, and Nintendo’s specifications do not establish that it is more comfortable than Joy-Con for every player. Nintendo Australia’s catalog also lists motion sensors, HD rumble and NFC.
Pick the Joy-Con Charging Grip if you want Joy-Con and charging during play
The Joy-Con Charging Grip joins left and right Joy-Con into a grip-style controller and can charge them while you play, using the Switch AC adapter or included USB charging cable. It is different from the regular grip included with Switch console sets. The Joy-Con themselves are sold separately from the charging grip. How do you keep a Switch charged while playing in tabletop mode?
Use Nintendo’s Adjustable Charging Stand with the Switch AC adapter. It lets the console charge while it is in tabletop mode, and its angle can be adjusted for viewing. Nintendo says the adapter is not included with the stand, so you need to supply the Switch AC adapter. This is the most directly documented choice for tabletop play when you can reach an outlet; Nintendo’s product description does not promise a specific number of extra play hours. A USB-C power bank may be useful for handheld play away from an outlet, but the available Nintendo material does not verify a specific power bank, charging rate, hardware revision or safe-use specification. Do not count on a particular number of added hours without checking a power bank against your console model. What case and screen protector should you buy?
A carrying case is useful for storage and travel rather than extending battery life. Nintendo Australia’s listed case bundle includes a screen protector, an organizer for five game cards and two Joy-Con straps; the case can also serve as a stand. That listing warns that the protector in one Switch bundle does not fit OLED. Nintendo Philippines lists a separate bundle with protectors for standard Switch and Switch OLED. Match the bundle and protector to your console instead of assuming one size fits every model. Check the regional listings for the Australia bundle and Philippines bundle.

Original Switch accessories do not all transfer to Switch 2. Nintendo’s compatibility table says original Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controllers can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, but original Joy-Con cannot attach to it. The original Adjustable Charging Stand and dock are marked incompatible. The original AC adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly, but cannot power it in TV mode. Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express; standard microSD cards can only be used to view screenshots and videos captured on an original Switch, according to the table. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information before reusing or purchasing accessories.

- For Joy-Con charging during play: choose the Joy-Con Charging Grip, and make sure you already have Joy-Con.
