The best-looking Xbox picture is not a universal preset. It is the highest-quality combination your console, the selected HDMI input, the cable path, the display and the game can actually support together. Start at Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details, use the capabilities Xbox detects, then choose between resolution, refresh rate and HDR according to what you value most.
What “best visual quality” means on Xbox
Picture quality has several dimensions that can conflict. A higher resolution preserves more fine detail in text, distant objects and textures. A higher refresh rate can make camera movement and aiming feel smoother. HDR can expand the range between dark and bright parts of a scene when the display and game implement it correctly. No single setting wins every one of those goals on every television or monitor.

Xbox Series X and Series S support display refresh rates up to 120 Hz, according to Xbox Wire, but that ceiling is not a promise that every screen, HDMI input or game can use 120 Hz. The console exposes only combinations it believes the connected equipment can handle. A television may support 4K on one HDMI input but not another, while an AV receiver, switch or capture device in the middle can impose its own limit.
Microsoft Learn treats HDR video output and variable refresh rate as game capabilities. In practice, a title can use a feature differently from another title, even when the console and television both support it. Configure the system for a sound connection, then check each demanding game for its own graphics, HDR or performance options.

Step 1: Check what Xbox detects before changing anything
Use the console’s compatibility report as your starting point rather than guessing from the television’s box or a cable label. Xbox Wire’s November 6, 2020 guide identifies this route:
- Open Settings on the Xbox.
- Choose General.
- Open TV & Display Options.
- Select 4K TV details.
The page reports the 4K and HDR capabilities Xbox detects through the current connection. Treat every item as a check of the complete signal path, not just the panel. If the console is connected to an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device, the report describes what can pass through that equipment as well as what the display can accept.
Read the report as a compatibility map
- Supported: The console has detected that the display path advertises the feature. You can test the corresponding option in TV & Display Options.
- Not supported: Do not force the mode. Check the HDMI input, intermediate equipment and cable before deciding that the panel lacks the feature.
- Inconsistent results: A changed input, sleeping receiver or loose connection can alter the HDMI handshake. Recheck the physical path and reopen 4K TV details.
The report is evidence about the current setup at this moment. If you move the console to a different HDMI socket or replace an intermediate device, run the check again.
Step 2: Choose resolution and refresh rate together
In Settings > General > TV & Display Options, select only a resolution and refresh-rate combination that the report and the display documentation support. The exact controls and available labels can vary with console software and the connected screen, so use the options your Xbox actually presents rather than relying on a preset copied from another model.
| Priority | Choose when | What you gain | What you give up or must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum spatial detail | Your display and HDMI path report the desired high-resolution mode and the game offers it. | Sharper fine detail, menus and distant scenery. | A game may cap its frame rate or offer a separate high-refresh mode; confirm the title’s own options. |
| Maximum motion smoothness | The display, input and connection expose a higher refresh rate, up to the Series X|S ceiling of 120 Hz. | More frequent screen updates and potentially smoother camera movement. | The available high-refresh mode may use a lower resolution, and the game must support that output. |
| Balanced output | You want the highest-quality combination that remains selectable without warnings or dropouts. | A practical compromise between detail and motion. | There is no platform-wide balanced value; the correct choice depends on your display and title. |
Do not assume that selecting 120 Hz automatically improves every game. The console can output that refresh rate, but a title may render at a lower frame rate or provide no high-refresh mode at all. Conversely, selecting the highest resolution does not make every title render natively at that resolution. The game’s engine and graphics modes determine what is actually drawn.

When the preferred combination is missing
Start with the simplest explanation: the selected HDMI input may not support the mode. Consult the display’s manual or on-screen input information and move the console to the input intended for the display’s highest-bandwidth features. If an AV receiver, switch or capture device sits between Xbox and the screen, temporarily connect the console directly to the television or monitor. This isolates the component that is limiting the report.
Next, inspect the existing cable and its seating at both ends. A cable change is conditional, not an automatic upgrade: buy or borrow a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only when the console and display both support a mode that the current connection fails to expose. A new cable cannot add a feature that the panel or input does not support.

Enable HDR formats only when the 4K TV details page and the display documentation confirm support. An HDR toggle is useful only when the television or monitor can interpret that format and the game supplies HDR content. If the screen is SDR-only, forcing HDR can produce a less accurate image rather than an improvement.
Dolby Vision gaming
Dolby’s Xbox guidance describes Dolby Vision gaming for compatible displays. Check the console’s detected TV capabilities first, then enable the Dolby Vision option only if it appears as supported for your connection. The setting is not a guarantee that every game will use Dolby Vision; title support and the display’s processing still determine the result.
If Dolby Vision is unavailable, leave it off and use the HDR format that Xbox and the display report as supported. Do not infer a fault from a missing Dolby Vision option when the panel, HDMI input or intermediate equipment does not advertise it.

Game-level HDR controls
Many games provide their own HDR calibration or brightness controls. Treat those controls as title-specific. They may ask you to adjust a logo, a luminance bar or a peak-brightness value, but the correct target depends on that game’s instructions and your display. Xbox-wide output settings cannot make every title use identical tone mapping.

Because no universal HDR calibration workflow or model-specific picture values are established here, avoid copying numerical brightness settings from a different television. Use the game’s calibration screen, keep the display in the picture mode you normally use for games, and verify the result in both bright and dark scenes.
Step 4: Decide whether ALLM and VRR help your setup
Xbox Wire identifies Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) as supported Series X|S display features. They are compatibility features, not image-quality switches that every owner must enable.
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
ALLM lets a compatible television or monitor switch to its low-latency game behavior when the console requests it. The display must support ALLM and must expose the feature on the selected HDMI input. If your screen has a manual game mode and no ALLM support, use the display’s own instructions instead; Xbox cannot create automatic switching where the panel does not provide it.
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with a game’s changing frame rate when both devices support it. It can reduce visible tearing and uneven pacing, but it does not raise a game’s rendering resolution or guarantee a fixed frame rate. Microsoft Learn lists VRR as a game technical capability, so behavior can differ between titles. Enable it only after confirming support in 4K TV details and the display’s documentation, then test a game that offers a variable-performance mode.

Use the game’s graphics menu for the final choice
After the system output is valid, open the game’s video or graphics settings. A title may offer choices such as a quality-focused mode and a performance-focused mode, but the names, resolutions and frame-rate targets are game-specific. Read the description supplied by the developer and compare the two modes in the kind of play you actually do.
- Choose the detail-focused option when texture quality, lighting and distant objects matter more than the smoothest motion.
- Choose the performance-focused option when rapid camera movement, aiming or competitive response matters more than maximum scene detail.
- Use the game’s HDR calibration when available instead of changing unrelated Xbox output values to compensate for one title.
- Recheck the game after an update; developers can change available modes and feature support.
A console setting and a game setting operate at different layers. The console selects a signal that the display can receive. The game decides how it renders within that signal. A 120 Hz-capable connection therefore does not turn a 30-frame-per-second title into a 120-frame-per-second one.
A practical decision framework
Use this order whenever you set up a new television, monitor or HDMI path:
- Identify the display path. Write down the exact HDMI input in use and every device between Xbox and the screen.
- Run 4K TV details. Record which 4K, HDR and related capabilities Xbox reports for that path.
- Check the display manual. Confirm which input supports the reported resolution, refresh rate, HDR format, ALLM and VRR.
- Choose your priority. Select the highest supported resolution if detail is your priority, or the highest supported refresh rate if motion is more important.
- Enable compatible HDR and gaming features. Turn on only formats and features confirmed by both sides of the connection.
- Configure the individual game. Pick its quality or performance mode and complete its HDR calibration if offered.
- Test a real scene. Check small text for clarity, a slow camera pan for smoothness, bright highlights for clipping and dark areas for lost detail.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: changing several options at once and then being unable to tell whether the television, cable path or game caused the result.

The 4K or HDR option is missing
- Open 4K TV details again and confirm the result for the currently selected input.
- Check the television’s documentation for the HDMI socket that supports the desired feature; ports are not always equivalent.
- Bypass an AV receiver, switch or capture device and connect Xbox directly to the display.
- Reseat the cable, restart the display and console, then run the compatibility check again.
- Only after these checks consider a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and only if the console and display both support the missing mode.
120 Hz is available on the television but not on Xbox
Confirm that the console is connected to the input rated for the higher refresh rate and that no intermediate device is restricting the signal. The television’s advertised maximum may apply only at a particular resolution or input. Xbox Series X|S support up to 120 Hz, but the selectable value still depends on the complete connection and the modes the display reports.

The picture becomes unstable after selecting a mode
Return to TV & Display Options and choose the last stable resolution and refresh rate. Then reconnect the cable directly to the display and remove intermediate equipment for a test. If the direct path works, the removed device or its configuration is the bottleneck. If it does not, select a lower mode that the display documentation explicitly supports and repeat 4K TV details.
HDR looks wrong in one game
Do not immediately disable HDR system-wide. First open that game’s HDR controls and follow its calibration instructions. Compare the result with another HDR-capable title. If only one game looks incorrect, its implementation or calibration is the more likely cause; Xbox output settings do not impose identical tone mapping on every title.
VRR or ALLM never activates
Verify support on the specific HDMI input, not just somewhere in the television’s specifications. Check that the feature is enabled in the display’s menus and that the console’s 4K TV details page recognizes it. A game may not exercise VRR, and ALLM behavior depends on the display’s automatic game-mode implementation.

Maintenance checks after changing equipment
- Run 4K TV details after moving the console to another input.
- Repeat the check after adding or removing a receiver, switch, soundbar or capture device.
- Keep a note of the stable resolution, refresh rate and HDR options so you can recover quickly after troubleshooting.
- Revisit the game’s graphics menu after major updates, since feature availability can change by title.
- Use the display manufacturer’s documentation for input-specific limits and picture controls; avoid assuming that settings from another model apply to yours.
Bottom line: match the signal to the whole system
For the best Xbox picture, begin with 4K TV details, not a copied preset. Select the highest resolution or refresh-rate combination that your specific display input and connection path report as supported, then enable HDR, Dolby Vision, ALLM and VRR only where the display and game can use them. Finally, make the quality-versus-performance decision inside each game. This compatibility-led approach produces a reliable picture without pretending that one setting is best for every Xbox, screen or title.
