How to Choose an EPA-Registered Mosquito Repellent: DEET, Picaridin, and Other Options Compared

The best mosquito repellent is an EPA-registered skin-applied product whose label covers mosquitoes and lists enough protection time for your outing. Compare the product’s EPA registration number, mosquito claims, directions, and label duration—not just the active ingredient or its percentage. DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), and PMD are all used in registered products, but no ingredient has one universal protection time across every formulation.

For a sound choice, first decide whether you need protection from mosquitoes only or from mosquitoes and ticks, estimate how long you will be outside, then select a labeled product that matches those conditions. EPA registration means the product was evaluated for human safety and effectiveness when used according to its label; it does not mean EPA endorses one product over another.

What “EPA-registered” means

Most skin-applied mosquito repellents must be registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency before they are marketed. An EPA-registered product has been evaluated for human safety and effectiveness when used exactly as its approved label directs. The registration number, shown as EPA Reg. No., identifies the specific formulation and label.

Registration is not a seal of superiority, and EPA does not endorse products listed in its repellent finder. Two products using the same active ingredient can have different directions, claims, and protection-time results because formulation and testing conditions differ.

Registration is different from exemption

Some products are exempt from registration because their ingredients were judged to pose minimal human-health risk at the marketed concentrations. EPA says these exempt products have not been evaluated by the agency for effectiveness. “Natural,” plant-based, or exempt wording therefore does not establish that a product repels mosquitoes reliably. A product that is neither registered nor legally exempt may not be lawful to sell.

For a purchase decision, look for an EPA Reg. No. and a current label that specifically addresses mosquitoes. Do not treat a front-of-package claim alone as proof of EPA evaluation.

Start with the label, not the ingredient name

EPA’s selection guidance reduces the decision to three practical questions: Which pest needs to be repelled, how long will exposure last, and is there an ingredient you prefer? Use those questions in order.

Check What to verify Why it matters
Pest claim The label says it protects against mosquitoes; check for tick coverage too if needed. A repellent designed or labeled only for another pest may not meet your needs.
Protection time The label’s duration for the relevant mosquito claim and use conditions. Protection must cover the activity; ingredient concentration alone is not a duration guarantee.
Active ingredient DEET, picaridin, IR3535, OLE, PMD, or another EPA-listed active. This is a preference and formulation choice, not a universal performance ranking.
Application directions Whether the product goes on skin, clothing, or both; reapplication instructions; age limits. Using a product outside its label can reduce protection and create avoidable exposure.
EPA identification EPA Reg. No. and a current package label. Confirms that you are evaluating the registered formulation rather than an unverified look-alike.

DEET, picaridin, IR3535, OLE, and PMD compared

EPA’s ingredient listings show that several active ingredients are available in registered skin-applied products. The counts below are approximate current-page counts from an EPA ingredient page last updated in 2026. They describe how many products are listed, not how well one ingredient performs against another.

Active ingredient Approximate products listed by EPA What can be concluded What still requires label checking
DEET More than 500 Widely available in registered formulations. Exact protection time, mosquito and tick claims, concentration, reapplication interval, and age wording.
IR3535 About 45 Available as a registered alternative to DEET and picaridin. Whether a particular formulation covers the pests and activity you have planned.
Picaridin About 40 Available in registered formulations and commonly considered when users prefer an alternative to DEET. Current label duration, concentration, application method, and additional pest claims.
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) Six A smaller set of registered products is listed by EPA. Child restrictions, exact active ingredient wording, mosquito claim, and protection time.
PMD Listed by EPA among registered actives PMD is another registered active-ingredient option. The individual product’s EPA registration, label directions, and duration.
Other registered actives Varies EPA lists additional active ingredients and formulations. All performance and safety details must come from the current product label.

The listing totals can change. They are not a league table, and they do not show that the ingredient with the most products lasts longest or works best.

How to decide between DEET and picaridin

Choose by the labeled job

Neither “DEET” nor “picaridin” automatically identifies a single performance level. Start with the exact product’s mosquito claim and protection-time statement. If you also need tick protection, confirm that the label includes ticks; do not assume every mosquito repellent does.

Match the protection time to your outing

For a short errand, a product with a shorter labeled duration may be sufficient. A long hike, camping trip, or evening outdoors requires a label duration that covers the planned exposure, with reapplication only as directed. EPA cautions that perspiration, water, temperature, and individual differences can alter real-world effectiveness.

Use personal preferences as a tie-breaker

People may prefer one active ingredient because of scent, skin feel, spray versus lotion format, or prior experience. Those preferences are reasonable after the label requirements are met. They should not replace checking the EPA Reg. No., mosquito claim, protection time, and age directions.

Do not infer a universal winner

EPA’s repellent tool reports product-specific protection-time results and warns that test conditions vary. The official pages reviewed do not establish one current, directly comparable ingredient-level duration statistic. A numeric duration is meaningful only when tied to the named formulation, its label, and the conditions for which it was tested.

Oil of lemon eucalyptus and PMD: important distinctions

EPA lists oil of lemon eucalyptus and PMD among active ingredients used in registered repellents. Product labels may use different wording, concentrations, and directions, so read the active-ingredient panel rather than assuming that every plant-derived product is equivalent.

Some OLE product labels restrict use in children under three. EPA describes an exception for certain products with OLE as the sole active ingredient at concentrations of 30% or less, but the individual product label controls. Do not apply the exception to a product without verifying its current label.

PMD products likewise require their own label review. The fact that an active appears on EPA’s ingredient page establishes availability in registered products, not a single protection time or a blanket recommendation for every user.

Skin-applied products versus spatial repellents

Skin-applied repellents travel with the person wearing them. They are labeled for application to exposed skin, clothing, or both, and their protection depends on following the stated application and reapplication directions.

Spatial repellents disperse an active ingredient into an area rather than coating the user’s skin. Their labels can limit the setting, coverage area, ventilation, wind conditions, placement, or duration. Check that the device is registered or legally exempt for its intended use and that the label covers your outdoor space. Do not substitute sound-wave gadgets for a registered repellent; the supplied EPA guidance does not establish them as proven mosquito repellents.

How long mosquito repellent lasts

There is no reliable ingredient-only answer such as “this active always lasts X hours.” Protection time belongs to the individual registered product and its test conditions. Concentration, formulation, application amount, sweating, swimming, rain, temperature, clothing, and personal differences can all affect the result.

  1. Find the duration on the current label. Look for separate statements for mosquitoes, ticks, or other pests.
  2. Compare it with your planned exposure. Include travel time, setup, breaks, and the possibility that conditions will be hotter or wetter than expected.
  3. Read the reapplication limit. The label may specify when reapplication is allowed, how much to use, or a maximum number of applications.
  4. Account for water and sweat. If the label says protection changes after swimming or heavy perspiration, follow that instruction rather than relying on the original application time.
  5. Do not extend the duration yourself. Applying extra product or reapplying sooner than directed does not convert an uncertain result into a guaranteed one.

How to verify a product before buying

  1. Locate the EPA Reg. No. It should appear on the package or label.
  2. Read the active-ingredient statement. Record the ingredient and concentration exactly as printed.
  3. Confirm the mosquito claim. Check whether the label says mosquitoes generally or includes an accepted claim for Aedes mosquitoes.
  4. Check protection time. Note the duration, the pest to which it applies, and any conditions or warnings.
  5. Review application directions. Verify whether it is for skin, clothing, or both, and whether the product is a lotion, pump spray, aerosol, wipe, or another format.
  6. Check age and special-use restrictions. Pay particular attention to children, pregnancy-related advice provided on the label, irritated skin, and use around animals.
  7. Use the current package label. EPA’s product-finder database is dated June 2019 even though the selection page was updated later. For named products, current packaging and the manufacturer’s current EPA-approved label are the controlling references.

Safe application: a practical procedure

Always read and follow the complete current label. The following procedure reflects EPA’s general safety directions; the product label can impose stricter requirements.

  1. Apply only where directed. Use repellent on exposed skin and/or clothing as the label specifies. Do not apply it under clothing.
  2. Keep it away from sensitive areas. Avoid the eyes and mouth. Never spray directly into the face; spray onto hands first, then apply carefully around the face.
  3. Protect damaged skin. Do not use on cuts, wounds, rashes, or irritated skin.
  4. Control inhalation. Avoid breathing spray and do not spray in enclosed spaces.
  5. Use only the labeled amount. Cover exposed skin without saturating it, and follow the stated reapplication interval.
  6. Wash after the activity. Wash treated skin and clothing after returning indoors, as the label directs.
  7. Keep animal use separate. Do not apply a human repellent to pets unless its label specifically says it is intended for animals.

Using mosquito repellent on children

For children, EPA advises an adult to put repellent on the adult’s own hands and then apply it to the child. Do not apply repellent to a child’s hands, because hands can reach the eyes or mouth. Keep products out of children’s reach and wash treated skin and clothing after coming indoors.

EPA’s guidance states that DEET products are approved for children without an age restriction, but the specific label still governs application. Some OLE labels restrict use under age three, and other formulations may have their own wording. Read the exact label every time rather than transferring age advice from one product to another.

What mosquito claims cover

EPA says a registered repellent can be expected to repel Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus when its accepted label says it protects against mosquitoes generally or specifically against Aedes. This matters in areas where those mosquitoes can transmit diseases. A label claim is the appropriate way to determine what protection has been evaluated; the ingredient name by itself is not.

Repellent is only one layer of bite prevention. Combine it with window and door screens, light-colored long sleeves and pants, avoiding heavily infested areas when possible, and removing standing water where mosquitoes breed.

Troubleshooting common buying mistakes

The package says “natural,” but there is no EPA registration number

Check whether the product is legally exempt and remember that EPA says exempt products have not been evaluated for effectiveness. If the product is neither registered nor clearly exempt, choose a product with an EPA Reg. No. instead.

The same active ingredient appears to have different durations

That is possible and not necessarily an error. Formulation, concentration, testing conditions, and label claims can differ. Compare the individual labels and use the duration attached to the product you actually bought.

Protection ended sooner than expected

Review whether you were sweating, swimming, exposed to rain, or operating in unusually hot conditions. Check the label’s water and reapplication instructions. Do not respond by exceeding the maximum amount or interval on the label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need both mosquito and tick protection

Select a product whose label names both pests and provides protection times for the relevant activity. A mosquito-only claim does not establish tick protection.

You want to protect a patio or campsite rather than your skin

Consider a labeled spatial repellent designed for that setting, and verify coverage, wind, placement, ventilation, and duration. Do not assume that a skin-applied product or an unregistered electronic device provides area protection.

A concise buying checklist

  • EPA Reg. No. is present.
  • Current label covers mosquitoes and any additional pest you need.
  • Protection time matches the whole outing.
  • Active ingredient and format suit your preferences.
  • Age, skin, inhalation, clothing, and reapplication directions are acceptable.
  • Water, sweat, temperature, and setting limitations are understood.
  • You have a second layer of protection, such as screens and protective clothing.

Bottom line: choose the labeled product that fits your exposure

DEET and picaridin are not automatic winners over one another, and EPA’s ingredient listings do not provide a universal ranking. Choose an EPA-registered product with a mosquito claim and a protection time long enough for your activity, then follow its application and age directions exactly. IR3535, OLE, PMD, and other registered actives can also be valid choices when their individual labels fit your needs. Treat registration as evidence of evaluated, label-directed safety and effectiveness—not as an endorsement—and use screens, clothing, and standing-water control to reduce bites further.
