For a demanding edit or design session, plug in your computer and use its high-performance power mode if extra power use, heat, or fan noise is acceptable. That can give the system more room to sustain performance, but no single CPU setting guarantees faster editing: cooling, background activity, memory, GPU, storage, media format, and the application’s own settings can all affect responsiveness.
Start with power and cooling
For long exports or other sustained work, connect a laptop or workstation to power when practical. Then choose the operating system’s high-performance option if you can accept its trade-offs. Return to a balanced or automatic mode for ordinary use, especially when battery life, quiet operation, or lower heat matters more than sustained performance.

Windows 11: Best performance
- Connect the computer to its power adapter for a long export or intensive work session, if practical.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode, then select Best performance. Microsoft says this can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed, but it uses more power, can make a laptop warmer, and drains its battery faster. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance.
- When the demanding session is over, select the balanced power mode available on your PC to favor everyday battery life and heat levels.
Windows also offers visual-effects settings intended to favor performance. Treat those as a general responsiveness adjustment, not a guaranteed way to speed up an editor or design app.

On macOS Ventura or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery (or Energy on desktop Macs) and choose Low Power, Automatic, or High Power mode for battery or power-adapter use. Apple describes Automatic as the default balance. For routine design work or light editing, Automatic is usually the sensible starting point.
#1 Best Overall
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, The most processing power you can get in mainstream desktop
- Can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- Cooler not included, Liquid cooler with 280 millimeter or larger radiator recommended. Max Temps:95°C
- 4.7 GHz max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 72 MB of game cache, ddr-3200 support
- For the advanced socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on x570 motherboards
High Power Mode is available only on certain Macs. Apple’s current list includes Mac Studio introduced in 2026; Mac mini introduced in 2024 or later with a Pro chip; MacBook Pro introduced in 2024 or later with a Pro or Max chip; and MacBook Pro introduced in 2021–2023 with a Max chip. Check Apple’s current Mac power-mode eligibility and instructions, since support can change as models and operating systems change.
Apple says High Power Mode lets fans run faster; the extra cooling may allow higher performance in very intensive workloads. It cites video editing and 3D work as cases where playback may be smoother and exports faster, including graphics-intensive work such as 8K ProRes 4444 and 8K DNxHR color grading. These are potential benefits, not a promise for every Mac or project. Expect more fan noise, and use the mode when a supported Mac is doing sustained demanding work and the extra noise is acceptable.
How the modes compare
| Option | Performance opportunity | Eligibility | Power, heat, and noise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 Best performance | Microsoft says it can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed; it is not a guaranteed application speedup. | Windows 11 setting; exact options may vary by PC. | Higher energy use; a laptop may run warmer and lose battery charge faster. |
| macOS Automatic | Apple’s default balance for power modes. | macOS Ventura or later. | Balanced default; Apple’s cited guidance does not quantify electricity use or fan noise for this mode. |
| macOS High Power Mode | Extra fan cooling may allow higher performance in very intensive workloads. | Only supported Mac models; check Apple’s current list. | Fans may be louder. Apple’s cited guidance does not quantify additional electricity use. |
These are operating-system-specific modes, not equivalent controls under the hood.

Reduce avoidable background work
Close or disable only the applications you recognize and do not need during the work session. A browser full of active tabs, sync jobs, launchers, or other editing software can compete for CPU time, memory, and storage access. Do not terminate unfamiliar system processes just to lower a usage number.
On Windows 11, review startup apps in Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off apps you do not need to launch automatically. For apps that support it, review their background permissions in Windows settings. Microsoft describes these as ways to reduce background activity in its performance guidance.
Find what is actually slowing the task
Observe resource use while reproducing the slowdown, rather than guessing from the CPU’s advertised clock speed or core count. On Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then inspect the Processes and Performance views. Microsoft recommends monitoring CPU, memory, and disk use.

- Shared L3 cache
- Dual 128-bit Floating point engines – capable of teaming together for 256-bit AVX instructions or operating separately with each core.
- High CPU use during the slowdown may indicate that the processor is heavily loaded. Check which process is using it and whether the workload is an effect, export, or other CPU-intensive operation.
- Memory pressure can make a project feel slow even when CPU use is not unusually high.
- Heavy disk activity or a busy background process can point to storage or competing work as a constraint.
- A single utilization reading does not prove a bottleneck. Watch what changes during the specific operation that feels slow.
If CPU use is modest but playback stutters, the limitation may lie elsewhere: GPU acceleration, memory, storage throughput, media decoding, network access, or application configuration. A faster CPU alone will not necessarily fix those constraints.
Check requirements for your exact application and workflow
Compare your hardware with the current requirements for the exact software version, then consider the footage or project you work with. Do not transfer one editor’s recommendations to another editor or to graphic-design software.
Premiere Pro 25.x example
Adobe’s requirements page applies to Premiere versions 25.0–25.6 and was last updated March 30, 2026. Adobe distinguishes its minimum specifications for HD editing from recommendations for HD, 4K, or higher work. For Windows, its recommendations include an Intel 11th Gen or newer CPU with Quick Sync, or an AMD Ryzen 3000 Series or Threadripper 3000 series or newer. They also include 16 GB RAM for HD, 32 GB or more for 4K and higher, an 8 GB GPU, a fast internal SSD for the application and cache, and an additional high-speed drive for media. Consult Adobe’s Premiere 25.x technical requirements for the full, version-specific details.

Those recommendations show why a powerful-looking CPU does not settle the question of performance: memory, GPU, cache, media storage, and network considerations matter too. Adobe’s SSD guidance is about the app/cache and media workflow, not a direct fix for CPU-bound effects or encoding. It does not specify a particular external interface or drive model.
Blender and other creative applications
Use the requirements published for the application and version you have installed. Blender maintains official hardware requirements and notes that they change over time; Premiere’s recommendations should not be treated as Blender’s. Apply the same caution to other video editors and design tools.
