Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a CPU by matching it to the applications, footage codecs and project sizes you actually use—not by picking the chip with the highest core count. For Premiere Pro, weigh sustained multicore performance and, for H.264 or HEVC footage, Intel Quick Sync support. For Photoshop, benchmark guidance suggests that architecture and per-core performance matter more than adding cores beyond roughly eight. Then compare current, version-matched application benchmarks and the cost of the complete PC platform.
Start with your software and projects
List the creative applications you use most, then identify the tasks that regularly consume the most time: editing and exporting video, working with large Photoshop documents, or manipulating complex Illustrator files. A CPU that suits one of those jobs may not be the best-value choice for the others.

Adobe’s Premiere Pro requirements, updated September 9, 2026, recommend Windows systems with an Intel 11th Gen or newer processor with Quick Sync, or an AMD Ryzen 3000 series or Threadripper 3000 series processor or newer. Adobe also recommends 16 GB of RAM for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. These are compatibility and system recommendations, not a guarantee that processors in the same listed family perform alike. See Adobe’s Premiere Pro technical requirements.

For Photoshop 27.x on Windows, Adobe lists multicore Intel, AMD or Windows ARM processors; Intel and AMD systems require AVX2 and SSE 4.2. Illustrator 30.0 and later lists a multicore Intel processor with SSE 4.2 or later, or AMD Athlon 64 with SSE 4.2 or later. These requirements establish a baseline, not which compatible CPU will be fastest for your files. Check the Photoshop requirements and Illustrator requirements for the versions you plan to run.

For Premiere Pro, consider cores and codec acceleration
Core count helps, but it is not a complete ranking
Adobe’s processor guidance recommends at least eight cores and a minimum 3.2 GHz for its recommended setup. Treat that as broad guidance for Premiere, not a universal buying rule: actual performance depends on the task, processor architecture, sustained power and cooling, and the rest of the system. Adobe’s processor, memory and GPU recommendations also discuss high-end codec workflows.
Check Quick Sync for H.264 and HEVC footage
Adobe says Intel Core i7 and i9 processors, as well as recent mobile Xeon processors, provide Quick Sync technology that can accelerate H.264 and HEVC decoding or playback. If you routinely edit those codecs, check that the specific Intel CPU and your Premiere setup can use Quick Sync. Its presence alone does not establish how fast every effect, export or timeline will run, and it should not be treated as an advantage for every codec or task.

For Photoshop and Illustrator, avoid buying cores you will not use
Photoshop does not necessarily scale with core count in the same way as a heavy video workload. Puget Systems’ benchmark-based guidance says performance gains beyond about eight cores are limited and advises weighing architecture and price. That is a third-party recommendation, not an Adobe requirement, and it applies to Photoshop rather than automatically predicting Premiere results. Puget currently identifies the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 7 9850X3D among leading Photoshop CPUs; that model leadership is a dated benchmark snapshot, not a universal recommendation for a mixed editing and design PC. See Puget Systems’ Photoshop hardware recommendations.

Illustrator’s published CPU requirements do not provide a comparative performance ranking. If Illustrator is a central part of your workflow, use benchmarks for the Illustrator version and kinds of documents you work with rather than inferring performance from its minimum processor specification.

Compare CPUs using relevant, current benchmarks
Look for results from the applications and versions you use, and compare processors tested in the same benchmark group. Puget Bench organizes Photoshop results by application and benchmark version because software changes can affect performance. Its submitted results can also reflect differences in memory, cooling, power limits and GPU configuration. Review Puget Bench for Photoshop with those limitations in mind.
- Match the workload: Separate Premiere playback and export results from Photoshop operations and Illustrator tasks. One score cannot establish the best CPU for all three.
- Match benchmark versions: Do not treat results from different application or benchmark versions as a clean head-to-head comparison.
- Check the test system: Where possible, compare results with similar memory, cooling, power limits and GPU configuration.
- Look beyond a single score: Prefer repeatable application-specific results over an isolated number, and consider whether the tested task resembles your own projects.
Budget for the whole platform
Compare the total build cost, not just CPU prices. A processor choice can affect motherboard compatibility, memory, cooling and power requirements; the GPU also matters to the complete creative system. Current prices are not established here, so verify component costs and compatibility when you buy. The RAM figures Adobe publishes for Premiere—16 GB for HD and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher—are a reminder that a CPU alone does not determine whether a system is adequately configured.

A practical decision path
- Write down your regular workloads. Identify your main application, the codecs and resolution you edit, and whether editing, playback or exports are the bottleneck.
- Filter for supported hardware. Check the current requirements for your application versions, operating system and CPU features before comparing speed.
- For H.264 or HEVC in Premiere, check Quick Sync specifically. Confirm the exact processor and intended setup support the acceleration you need.
- Balance cores against the design workload. Give Premiere multicore performance appropriate weight, but do not assume a higher core count makes Photoshop proportionally faster.
- Compare version-matched benchmarks and full platform cost. Favor similar test configurations and include motherboard, memory, cooling and GPU in the budget.
