Add a built-in timer if your recipes depend on timing; treat ratio calculation and automatic start as conveniences, not requirements. A scale helps you repeat a dose-to-water relationship, but it does not decide which recipe tastes best.
What a brew ratio tells you
A brew ratio compares the mass of dry coffee with the mass of water used. For example, HARIO UK gives 1:16—15 g of coffee to 240 g of water—as a standard pour-over example in its September 18, 2026 guide. It is a starting point, not a universal ideal; adjust the recipe to your coffee and taste.

Measuring by mass is more repeatable than relying on a scoop. HARIO explains that grind size and bean origin affect density, so the same scoop volume can contain different amounts of coffee. Weighing the dose gives you a consistent starting value, and weighing the water lets you repeat the ratio.

Choose a scale that fits your setup
Check capacity with the full load in mind
Do not compare capacity with the coffee dose alone. Account for the vessel and brewer on the platform as well as the coffee and water. For pour-over, check that the dripper and carafe fit together and do not obscure the display. For espresso, check the drip-tray area and the height available for your cup.

Match the platform dimensions to the brewer
A scale can have sufficient capacity and still be awkward to use if its platform is too small, the display is hidden, or the brewer does not clear the machine. Measure the available space and compare it with the specific model’s dimensions. Understand increments and accuracy claims
A display in 0.1 g increments makes it practical to weigh small doses and follow incremental pours. But display resolution and accuracy are not the same thing: a scale can show tenths without every displayed value being accurate to a tenth of a gram.

Decide whether a timer or automation helps
If your pour-over recipe uses timed pours or a target total brew time, an integrated timer keeps the two measurements together. HARIO says its V60 Drip Scale has a built-in timer to help users follow and repeat recipes. A manual timer is sufficient if you prefer to control when timing starts.
Some models automate parts of the workflow, but the behavior varies. TIMEMORE describes an espresso mode that starts tracking with the first espresso drop and a pour-over sequence that begins with the first pour. These features can reduce button presses; they are not necessary to measure a ratio.

Choose whether you want live ratio calculation
A ratio calculator turns a coffee dose and chosen ratio into a target water mass. HARIO’s POLARIS product demonstration uses 20 g of coffee at 1:15 to calculate 300 g of target water, then displays how much of that target has been poured. TIMEMORE also describes a ratio function on Basic 3.0.
This is an interface convenience: you can calculate the target yourself and track the water on a basic scale. The calculator does not select a recipe for you or determine whether the result suits your taste.
