To optimize a PC for a large open-world game, first identify whether the problem is low average frame rate, uneven frame pacing, shader stutter, long loading, or world-data streaming. Then change one setting at a time and compare the same repeatable scene. There is no universal best preset: a change that helps a GPU-limited PC may do little for a CPU-limited one.
Start by identifying what is slow
Write down the game, resolution, graphics preset, and a location or activity you can repeat. Compare performance in that same situation before and after each change. Separate these symptoms because they point to different parts of the system:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Low average frame rate: the CPU or GPU may be limiting performance, or the game may be constrained by memory or its own workload.
- Uneven frame pacing or stutter: shader compilation, asset streaming, or changing CPU/GPU demands may be involved.
- Long loads or delayed world detail: storage and the game’s data-loading path may matter more than graphics quality.
These are diagnostic possibilities, not a diagnosis based on symptoms alone. Microsoft’s Windows Gaming and Graphics Technologies Developer Relations group notes that “The vast majority of games are limited by CPU performance on systems with high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs).” That observation describes Microsoft’s experience with Windows titles; it does not mean every game or PC is CPU-limited. Its technical guidance also explains that high-resolution settings can create GPU limits and that limited physical memory can require lower detail settings. Microsoft’s performance guidance for Windows titles covers these distinct bottleneck classes.

If the GPU appears to be limiting performance
Test a lower resolution or reduce demanding visual effects in the game’s own graphics menu. Make one change, then replay the same scene. If performance improves, you have evidence that GPU demand was part of the problem; if not, restore the setting and test a different variable. Lowering image quality is not guaranteed to help when the CPU is the limit.

If the CPU or memory may be limiting performance
Lowering resolution may not address a CPU limit. Microsoft’s guidance discusses CPU performance, physical-memory constraints, and file-processing overhead as separate issues. A game’s settings and workload determine which changes matter, so treat settings such as view distance or world detail as title-dependent tests rather than a guaranteed fix.
Microsoft also gives developers a recommendation of approximately 300 or fewer draw-batch submissions per frame for current-generation hardware to reduce command-buffer processing bottlenecks. This is rendering implementation guidance for game developers, not a player setting, FPS target, or consumer tuning prescription.

Check Windows 11 graphics settings
Choose the game’s GPU on a multi-GPU PC
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game or add it if it is not listed, then open its options.
- Choose High performance when you want the game to use the higher-performance GPU, save the setting, and restart the game.
This per-app preference is useful on PCs with more than one GPU; it is not a performance upgrade for a system with only one graphics processor. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 graphics settings instructions.

Consider windowed-game optimization only for eligible games
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games applies to eligible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. For compatible games, Windows moves presentation from the legacy blt model to the flip model, reducing frame latency and potentially enabling features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported systems. The setting is per app, and you need to restart the game after changing it. Auto HDR enables the optimization automatically; turning the optimization off may require turning off Auto HDR first.

Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and variable refresh rate are also compatibility-dependent Windows graphics features, not universal remedies for low performance. Variable refresh rate requires a compatible display and driver setup. Microsoft’s DirectX graphics settings overview describes these options and their eligibility context.
Use the game’s graphics controls before driver overrides
Use the game’s own controls as the main place to compare image quality and performance. There is no established setting order that works for every open-world title: resolution, shadows, view distance, foliage, volumetrics, ray tracing, and upscaling all vary in cost and implementation. Test only settings relevant to your suspected limit and keep a record of what you changed.

For NVIDIA graphics settings, NVIDIA recommends leaving antialiasing application-controlled when a game has its own antialiasing controls. Its reference also notes that higher anisotropic-filtering values improve image quality while reducing performance. Avoid forcing driver-level settings without a clear reason; a driver override can change the game’s intended quality/performance balance. These details apply to NVIDIA’s settings, not every graphics driver. NVIDIA’s 3D settings reference explains the controls.

Games may compile shaders on your PC at launch or during play. Microsoft says this can contribute to longer loading, shader-compilation stutter, and higher power use. Advanced Shader Delivery prepares shader compilation in advance and delivers compiled results, but it requires supported Windows, GPU and driver configurations, and storefront integration.

- Power supply: 650W (80plus bronze) certified for energy efficiency and stable performance
Microsoft’s Xbox developer article dated September 15, 2026 says Advanced Shader Delivery was then available for games played in the Xbox app on PC. That does not establish support for every game or storefront, and package alignment matters as games are updated. Check the game and platform’s support rather than assuming the feature is available. See Microsoft Learn’s Advanced Shader Delivery overview and Microsoft’s September 15, 2026 Xbox developer article.
NVIDIA documents a separate, driver-specific consideration: its shader cache stores compiled shaders so later runs need not compile them again. Installing a new driver deletes that cache, so the first run afterward may stutter while shaders are compiled again. NVIDIA says the cache size should accommodate the games you use without exceeding available disk space. Do not generalize this behavior or setting to other driver stacks.
Think of an SSD as a loading and streaming option, not an FPS fix
Microsoft’s gaming PC setup guide search listing associates DirectStorage with game data pulled from an NVMe SSD and faster loading or transitions in detailed worlds. That is a conditional storage-path benefit, not a promise of higher frame rates across games. The listing does not establish that every title uses DirectStorage or that replacing a drive will fix stutter.

An SSD purchase is most relevant when storage, loading, or supported world streaming is the issue; it is not a substitute for diagnosing a CPU or GPU limit.
Compare changes without losing track
- Keep a baseline note of the game, resolution, graphics settings, and repeatable scene.
- Change one setting at a time and replay that scene before making another change.
- Record both the symptom and the trade-off: for example, whether a change improved smoothness at the cost of image quality.
- Restore changes that do not help, and restart the game when a Windows setting requires it.
This simple comparison method helps distinguish a useful adjustment from a coincidental change in the game’s workload. The official guidance does not specify a universal consumer benchmark procedure or a guaranteed improvement threshold.
