How to Optimise Rack Infrastructure for High-Density Systems Without Creating Bottlenecks

High-density rack optimisation is a facility-wide design problem. Match workload, electrical delivery, heat removal, airflow, access and site conditions before selecting a layout or cooling approach.

Optimising a high-density rack starts with the workload and the facility—not with a rack, power strip or cooling product. Electrical capacity, heat removal, airflow, access, structural support and site limits have to work together. Define those requirements first, then choose an air-cooled, liquid-cooled or hybrid arrangement that the equipment and building can support.

Define the design envelope before arranging racks

Rack IT power becomes heat that the facility must remove. As load rises, the design has to deliver power and move heat without compromising equipment operation, maintenance access or the building’s limits. ASHRAE’s integrated-design principles treat workload, power, cooling, structural readiness and site context as connected decisions.

  • Expected rack IT load, power quality, distribution capacity and required redundancy.
  • Equipment airflow direction and thermal requirements, plus any liquid-cooling connections or interfaces.
  • Available cooling and heat-rejection capacity, including room conditions and local environmental limits.
  • Rack and equipment weight, floor or structural capacity, cable routes and service clearances.
  • Access for installation and maintenance, along with constraints such as water availability and site climate.

There is no single rack-density figure that defines a high-density system for every facility. The acceptable load depends on the equipment and the electrical, thermal and structural design around it.

Keep air-cooled racks from recirculating exhaust

For air-cooled equipment, preserve its intended front-to-back airflow path: cool air should reach the equipment inlets, and hot exhaust should not return to those inlets. Hot- or cold-aisle containment can help separate supply and exhaust air and limit recirculation. It is an air-management strategy, not a substitute for checking cooling capacity, airflow distribution and room layout.

The Open Compute Project’s Colocation Facility Guidelines for Deployment of Open Compute Project Racks v2.0 specifies airflow direction, containment and other deployment criteria for its rack context. Its table identifies more than 8 kW as an acceptable maximum rack density and more than 12 kW as an optimum maximum. Those values describe that document’s deployment criteria; they are not general thresholds for deciding whether a rack is high density or what a different facility can support.

Choose a heat-removal approach that matches the load

If room-air cooling cannot handle the intended heat load, liquid cooling may capture heat closer to its source. Options include direct-to-chip cold plates, coolant distribution units (CDUs) and rear-door heat exchangers. The OCP’s Cooling Environments project covers components and approaches including cold plates, tubing, manifolds, quick disconnects, CDUs and rear-door heat exchangers.

These approaches have different equipment interfaces and installation needs. Compare them against the actual server design, the facility’s cooling and heat-rejection systems, and the work required to install and service them.

Approach What it does Design checks
Air cooling with aisle containment Uses room or row airflow and separates supply air from hot exhaust. Verify airflow direction, cooling capacity, containment fit and service access.
Rear-door heat exchanger Captures heat at the rack exhaust using a heat exchanger mounted at the rear. Check compatibility with the rack and facility cooling connections, plus access for installation and maintenance.
Direct-to-chip liquid cooling Transfers heat from compatible components to coolant through cold plates and a liquid distribution path. Confirm server interfaces and the required tubing, manifolds, disconnects and distribution equipment.
Hybrid liquid and air cooling Uses liquid cooling for part of the heat load while room or row air systems handle remaining heat. Plan both heat-removal paths and retain suitable room-level cooling and humidity control.

Liquid-cooled IT does not mean the room no longer needs air systems. OCP’s 2025 Modular Technology Cooling material notes that residual heat and humidity still require air cooling and humidity control. A hybrid design must account for that remaining room load as well as the heat captured by liquid.

Size rack power delivery for the electrical and thermal environment

A rack-mounted power distribution unit (rack PDU) should match the electrical design, connected equipment, monitoring needs and temperature environment. Check its electrical ratings and outlet types against the installation, and verify how its monitoring supports the level of per-cabinet or per-device visibility the operation requires.

An ASHRAE TC 9.9 power white paper, revised June 22, 2016, discusses rack PDUs typically located at the rack rear and recommends that new rack PDU products be designed for at least 60°C (140°F), because rear-rack exhaust can be hotter than rack-inlet air. This is the paper’s product-design recommendation, not a universal code requirement or an automatic specification for every installation. Confirm current manufacturer ratings and the site’s requirements before selecting equipment. Read the ASHRAE TC 9.9 power white paper.

Assess retrofit limits before committing to a layout

An existing room may constrain a proposed upgrade even when the rack equipment itself is suitable. Establish the available electrical distribution capacity, cooling and heat-rejection capability, load support, service access and local environmental limits before fixing the rack plan. Check water availability where the cooling design depends on it, and account for structural readiness as well as operating conditions.

ASHRAE’s retrofit and modernization guidance discusses hybrid cooling and power upgrades for AI-oriented facilities. It offers design considerations, not a prescriptive retrofit recipe: the upgrade path has to be assessed against the particular building and its installed systems.

Evaluate the whole system, not one headline metric

Compare proposed arrangements by how well their capacity, redundancy, thermal control and maintainability align with the workload and facility. Include installation and service requirements in the comparison, not just the nominal rack load or cooling method.

ASHRAE’s AI data-center energy and thermal framework identifies PUE, WUE, WUI and CUE among the metrics operators can track. ASHRAE’s energy and thermal efficiency guidance provides that framework context. A single metric does not replace checking the design’s power, cooling, water-related impacts, structural fit and operational needs together.
