Granny Memories: What to Know About Its On-Phone Memoir Drafts

Granny Memories is described as an Android app that turns a grandmother’s spoken memories into draft book chapters while keeping her words and choices central. The writing is reported to happen on the phone, but the audio transcription relies on an external service—an important distinction for anyone asking whether the process is private or fully offline.

How Granny Memories turns a recording into a chapter

The project’s workflow is built around voice notes rather than an open-ended chatbot prompt. A storyteller can record a memory or choose an existing voice note, then work through successive review stages before a chapter is drafted.

  1. Record or choose a story. Start with a new recording or an existing voice note.
  2. Review the transcript. The app transcribes the audio and marks uncertain words so the storyteller can correct them.
  3. Separate the story into ideas. The app organizes the account into ideas tied to the words spoken.
  4. Review proposed voice traits. It suggests traits for the storyteller’s writing voice and supports them with quotations, then asks the storyteller to approve or reject them.
  5. Read the chapter draft. The app uses the reviewed material to draft a short chapter. Passages are described as having markers such as “Audio 1 · 00:20” that open the corresponding point in the recording.
  6. Approve and organize. The storyteller reviews the chapter and can organize approved chapters into a book.

That sequence makes the storyteller an editor of the memoir rather than a passive source of material: uncertain words, style suggestions and chapter drafts all have review points.

How the app tries to keep the story faithful

The project write-up describes checks intended to keep the draft grounded in the recording. Cleaned text is supposed to use only words that were spoken; extracted ideas are supposed to quote the transcript literally; and chapter paragraphs are supposed to refer to ideas that already exist. If a check fails twice, the described fallback is to keep the storyteller’s words as spoken.

The author also says the app should ask about missing information instead of filling gaps with invented names, facts, dialogue or a moral. These safeguards are design claims in the project write-up, not independently audited guarantees. They can discourage unsupported additions, but the available account does not establish that invented details are impossible.

Traceability is another part of the design. A reader can follow a chapter passage back to the relevant recording moment, which gives the storyteller a way to check whether a draft reflects the source. The author recounts that a small model initially introduced a causal detail that had not been spoken; restricting the model’s inputs to literal quotations addressed that example. It is an implementation anecdote, not a measured reliability result.

What stays on the phone—and what does not

According to the author, chapter writing runs locally on a Samsung Galaxy S24 using Gemma 4 E2B, quantized to GGUF Q4_K_M and run through llama.rn. Audio transcription is the external network step: the project uses ElevenLabs Scribe v2 with automatic language detection. The user enters an API key, which the author says is stored in Android secure storage.

The author says transcript text and writing stay on the device. That is a description of this project’s stated architecture, not a broader privacy guarantee: the recording is sent to the external transcription service for transcription, and the write-up does not establish every detail of the service’s data handling or retention.

For the named Galaxy S24 setup, Paula’s project write-up reports a quantized model size of about 3.1 GB, roughly five seconds to load, and a speed of 11–12 tokens per second on an Exynos 2400 using CPU only. These are author-reported figures for that phone and configuration, not independent benchmarks or a promise of performance on other devices.

What the demonstration does—and does not—show

The demo’s spoken voice is an ElevenLabs AI voice from its Voice Library reading a fictional memory written for the demonstration. The author says the repository and video contain no real family recordings. The demo therefore illustrates the workflow, not a real grandmother’s memoir or a test with family audio.

The project write-up also says its test suite includes 23 Node tests, among them a fake-model end-to-end run. That documents software checks, but does not establish how the app performs with real families or across Android phones. The author reports one development issue in which Android killed the app for low memory on a second run until the model was released between tasks; that is a project-specific lesson, not evidence that all Android devices behave the same way.

Is Granny Memories available for your phone?

The project description identifies Granny Memories as an Android app, but it does not establish public app-store availability, supported Android versions or a general device compatibility list. The Galaxy S24 is the author’s reported test setup, not a stated requirement or confirmation that other phones work. Anyone considering using it should verify availability and compatibility rather than assume the test configuration defines the supported devices.

Who this approach may suit

The design may suit families who want a memoir to begin with a person’s own spoken account and who value a chance to correct, approve and trace drafts. Its central trade-off is that writing locally requires running a large model on the phone, while transcription still depends on an outside service. The project’s described controls and source links offer ways to review the output, but a storyteller should still check every chapter against the recording before treating it as a faithful account.
