Open and close the inventory with your keyboard
- While playing Minecraft with a keyboard, press E to open the inventory.
- Press E again or Esc to return to the main game view.
These are the standard keyboard controls described in Minecraft’s Minecraft Controls guide, published June 5, 2023. Its basic keyboard-and-mouse controls apply broadly to Java and Bedrock unless a difference is noted.

If E does not open your inventory
The inventory key may have been changed. Open the game’s options or settings, find the keyboard controls, and check the binding for inventory. Minecraft lets players customize controls or restore the defaults. The exact menu layout can vary by edition; Minecraft Education documents the route as Settings → Controls, where controls can be modified or reset: Minecraft Education keyboard and mouse controls.
Using a controller on a PC
E is the keyboard shortcut, not a universal controller button. If you are playing with a gamepad, use the controls shown for your input setup. Minecraft’s PC store page says Bedrock Edition supports controllers, while Java Edition does not have native controller support at this time: Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC.
