For a Microsoft account, reset it through Microsoft; for a local account, use the sign-in screen’s security questions or a reset disk you created earlier; for a work or school account, contact your IT administrator. If Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key, that is a separate encryption prompt—not a password reset.
First identify what Windows is asking for
At the sign-in screen, check whether you are being asked for your Windows password or a BitLocker recovery key. Then identify whether the Windows account is a Microsoft account, a local account, or managed by a workplace or school. The recovery route depends on both answers.

- Microsoft account: You sign in to Windows with an account managed by Microsoft. Use Microsoft’s password-reset or account-recovery process.
- Local account: The account is specific to the Windows installation. A reset disk made in advance or security questions shown on the sign-in screen may help.
- Work or school account: The organization may control the account and its reset options. Contact its IT administrator.
- BitLocker recovery: Windows is asking for an encryption recovery key, not the account password. Follow the separate BitLocker recovery route.
Reset a Microsoft account password
Use Microsoft’s account-recovery process to reset the password for a Microsoft account. Dell says it cannot access or recover a user’s Microsoft account. A local-account password reset disk does not apply to a Microsoft account. See Dell Support’s Using a Microsoft Account on your Dell Computer for Dell’s account guidance, and follow Microsoft’s recovery instructions for the account itself.
Recover a local Windows account
Dell’s detailed instructions cover Windows 11 local accounts. If the sign-in screen offers security questions, answer them to continue with the password-reset flow. If you created a password reset disk before being locked out, use that instead. Dell notes that this disk is only for a local account and must be prepared while signed in; it cannot be created after the password has been forgotten. Dell’s article states: “This operation is only possible when using a Windows 11 or Windows 10 Local Account. You cannot create a password reset disk if you are using a Microsoft Account (MSA).” See Dell’s instructions for creating and using a Windows password reset USB flash drive.

Use an existing reset disk
- Connect the USB reset disk to the Dell laptop at the Windows sign-in screen.
- Choose the password-reset option shown on the screen.
- Select the reset-disk option and follow the wizard’s prompts.
The disk must have been created for the local account on that computer. If you did not make one before lockout, this route is unavailable.
Use security questions if Windows offers them
Choose the password-reset option at sign-in and answer the security questions configured for the local account. If no questions or reset-disk option appears, do not assume Microsoft-account or organization-managed recovery steps will work for a local account. Dell’s Windows 11 instructions may not match every Windows version or configuration; Dell’s overview links to operating-system-specific guidance for what to do if you forget your Windows password.

Contact IT for a work or school account
If your Dell laptop is signed in with an employer- or school-managed account, ask the organization’s IT administrator to reset it or restore access. The account may be centrally managed, and Windows may not show the local-account reset option. Dell explains this distinction in its reset-disk guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key
A BitLocker prompt concerns access to encrypted data, not the Windows sign-in password. Resetting the account password will not supply the encryption key or unlock the drive. Dell says it does not store or provide the user’s BitLocker recovery key and cannot bypass the recovery process. Follow Dell’s guidance on finding a BitLocker recovery key. If you cannot locate the key, Dell points to Windows recovery options; consider the effect on data before proceeding.

Use Windows recovery only after account-recovery options
Factory reset, restore, or reinstall are operating-system recovery options, not ordinary password-reset methods. They can affect files, apps, and settings, so check the relevant instructions and data consequences before choosing one. Dell provides separate guidance for factory resetting, restoring, or reinstalling Windows on a Dell computer.

If you can still sign in to a local account, Dell’s reset-disk process lets you create a USB password reset disk in advance. It will not help with an existing lockout if you did not prepare it, and it is not for Microsoft accounts. Keep account-recovery information current as well, so you have a route available if you lose access.
