How to Open Settings and Navigate on Phones Without a Home Button

You do not need a physical Home button to open Settings. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom edge to reach the Home Screen, then tap Settings. On an Android phone using gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom and open Settings from the app drawer or search. If gestures are difficult, iPhone AssistiveTouch adds an onscreen Home control, while many Android phones offer a three-button navigation mode.

The quickest way to reach Settings

The route depends on whether you are using an iPhone without a Home button or an Android phone configured for gesture navigation. The key distinction is that Settings is an app; the physical button only changed how you returned to the Home Screen.

Opening Settings on an iPhone without a Home button

Return to the Home Screen from an app

  1. Place your finger at the very bottom edge of the display, not in the middle of the screen.
  2. Swipe upward in one continuous motion.
  3. Release when the current app shrinks away and the Home Screen appears.
  4. Tap the Settings app.

Face ID iPhone models use this bottom-edge swipe in place of the older Home-button press. A short swipe that starts too high may scroll the app instead of leaving it, so begin at the lower bezel or the lowest visible edge of the screen.

Open Control Center

Control Center is separate from the Home gesture. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner. Starting near the center of the top edge opens notifications instead, so move your finger from the right-hand corner when you need quick controls such as connectivity, brightness or volume.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When the bottom swipe is missed

  • Start at the bottom edge and move straight upward rather than diagonally.
  • Keep the motion continuous; lifting your finger halfway can leave the app open.
  • If an app is displaying a full-screen video or game, try the same gesture from the lowest edge where the system gesture remains available.
  • Use AssistiveTouch if repeated swipes are uncomfortable or unreliable.

Using AssistiveTouch as an onscreen Home button

AssistiveTouch places a floating control on the iPhone display. Apple documents it as a way to replace difficult gestures and physical button presses, including returning Home, opening Control Center and switching apps.

Turn on AssistiveTouch through Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Tap Touch.
  4. Select AssistiveTouch.
  5. Turn on the AssistiveTouch switch.

A floating button then appears above other apps. Tap it and choose Home to return to the Home Screen, where you can select Settings or another app.

Enable it with Siri when navigation is difficult

If you cannot reach the Accessibility menus, say "Turn on AssistiveTouch" to Siri. Once the floating button appears, tap it and select Home. This is useful when the display is hard to swipe, a case interferes with edge gestures, or you are helping someone who has limited dexterity.

Finding Settings on an Android phone without visible navigation buttons

Recognize gesture navigation

Android may hide the traditional navigation bar when gesture navigation is enabled. Google describes three basic gestures:

  • Swipe up from the bottom to go Home.
  • Swipe up from the bottom and hold to switch between apps.
  • Swipe inward from either the left or right edge to go Back.

These gestures are independent of the Settings app. To open Settings, return Home with the bottom swipe, then open the app drawer and tap Settings. On phones that provide system search, search for Settings and select the matching app.

Switch to three-button navigation

Android also supports a three-button navigation mode with dedicated Home, Back and Recents buttons. The exact menu name and location can vary by manufacturer and Android version.

  4. Choose Three-button navigation if your phone offers it.
  5. Use the displayed Home button to return to the Home Screen, then open Settings whenever needed.

Older Android versions can use different labels or place the control in another section. If a search for Navigation produces no result, check the phone maker’s system or display settings and confirm the Android version before following instructions written for a different model.

iPhone and Android navigation compared

The two platforms solve the missing-button problem differently. iPhone Face ID models use fixed edge gestures and provide AssistiveTouch as the main onscreen substitute. Android lets you choose between gestures and a three-button layout on devices that support both.

Comparison point iPhone with Face ID Android gesture navigation Android three-button navigation

Opening quick controls without going Home

iPhone Control Center

You do not have to leave the current app to reach Control Center. Swipe down from the top-right corner. If that edge movement is difficult, turn on AssistiveTouch and select Control Centre from its menu. This gives you a second route without changing the current app.

Android Quick Settings

Android uses Quick Settings rather than Apple’s Control Center terminology. The panel is reached with the phone’s top-edge swipe, but the number of swipes, tile arrangement and available controls depend on the Android version and manufacturer. If the panel does not appear as expected, check the model-specific gesture instructions or use Settings search for the control you need.

Troubleshooting when the gesture does not work

You cannot get to the Home Screen on an iPhone

  • Begin at the absolute bottom edge and swipe upward in one motion.
  • Do not begin on an in-app button or near the middle of the display.
  • Try a slower, deliberate swipe if a fast flick is being interpreted as scrolling.
  • Enable AssistiveTouch with Siri by saying "Turn on AssistiveTouch", then use its Home command.

Control Center opens the wrong panel

  • On Face ID iPhone models, start in the top-right corner, not the top center.
  • If you see notifications, move farther to the right before beginning the downward swipe.
  • Use AssistiveTouch’s Control Centre option when the corner gesture is hard to perform.

Android gestures feel inconsistent

  • Confirm that the phone is using gesture navigation rather than a three-button layout.
  • For Home, swipe from the bottom edge; for Back, swipe from either side edge.
  • For recent apps, swipe up from the bottom and hold instead of releasing immediately.
  • Search Settings for Navigation and select three-button navigation if you prefer visible controls.

The instructions do not match your Android phone

Android explicitly allows differences between older devices, manufacturers and software versions. Look for terms such as Navigation, Navigation mode or Navigation bar, and use the phone’s Settings search rather than assuming another model’s menu path is identical.

Accessibility options beyond a Home control

Apple’s accessibility tools include Voice Control, AssistiveTouch, external keyboards, eye control on supported devices and other assistive devices. Accessibility features can also be placed in Control Center for quicker access. These options are useful when the issue is not only the absence of a button but also limited reach, tremor, reduced vision or difficulty with repeated edge swipes.

AssistiveTouch is the most direct replacement for an onscreen Home action because its menu can remain available over other apps. Voice Control can reduce the need for touch input, while an external keyboard can provide another way to move through supported interfaces. Availability of particular features depends on the iPhone model, software and connected hardware.

Practical choices for common situations

You only need Settings once

Use the platform’s normal Home gesture, then tap Settings. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom edge. On Android gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom, open the app drawer or use search, and select Settings.

You frequently miss edge gestures

On iPhone, enable AssistiveTouch and use its Home item. On Android, switch to three-button navigation if the device offers it. A visible Home button removes the need to start precisely at the bottom edge.

You need quick controls while staying in an app

Use the iPhone top-right swipe for Control Center or select Control Centre inside AssistiveTouch. On Android, open Quick Settings using the device’s top-edge gesture; the exact panel layout is version- and manufacturer-dependent.

You are helping someone with limited dexterity

Configure AssistiveTouch first, then explain the floating button’s Home and Control Centre items. Consider adding AssistiveTouch to the Accessibility Shortcut so it can be shown quickly. On Android, three-button navigation may be easier to understand than three separate edge gestures, provided the phone includes that mode.

  • Android gesture navigation uses bottom and side-edge swipes, while three-button navigation restores dedicated Home, Back and Recents controls.
