To open the Windows Services console with elevated rights, launch services.msc using one of the five methods below and approve the User Account Control (UAC) prompt. If you use a standard account, you need authorized administrator credentials; selecting “Run as administrator” does not grant permissions by itself.
Choose a launch method
| Method | Best for | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Start search | A quick, one-time launch | None |
| Elevated Command Prompt | When you are already working in a command shell | Open the shell as administrator first |
| Run dialog | A quick launch from the keyboard | None |
| Task Manager | When Task Manager is already open or is your available entry point | None |
| Shortcut | Repeated access | Create and optionally configure a shortcut |
These methods all start the same console; they do not change the account’s permissions. The steps below are based on a Windows how-to updated August 26, 2026. Menu wording may vary by Windows version. Techbout’s Services launch guide

1. Use Start search
- Open Start and type
Servicesorservices.msc. - Right-click the Services result and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the UAC prompt, or enter an administrator password if Windows requests one.
2. Open it from an elevated Command Prompt
- Search for Command Prompt, open its context menu, and select Run as administrator.
- In the elevated window, type
services.mscand press Enter.
Typing the command into an ordinary Command Prompt does not elevate it. The shell itself must be opened as administrator first. Techbout’s Services launch guide
3. Use the Run dialog
- Open the Run dialog with Windows+R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to request an elevated launch.
- Approve UAC or enter authorized administrator credentials if prompted.
Techbout’s Services launch guide documents this keyboard shortcut for the Run dialog.

C:WindowsSystem32services.msc. - To elevate it for a single launch, right-click the shortcut and choose Run as administrator.

Why “Run as administrator” may still require a password
Under User Account Control, a member of the local Administrators group commonly runs applications with a standard-user token until elevation is requested and approved. A standard account needs credentials for an authorized administrator to elevate an application. The launch method cannot bypass that requirement. Microsoft’s UAC documentation

If you are signed in with a standard account and have a separate authorized admin account, you can try launching the console as that user: hold Shift while right-clicking the app or shortcut, select Run as different user, then enter the administrator username and password. Microsoft notes that an app, MMC console, or Control Panel tool launched from a network location may fail when the share credentials differ from those used to start it. Microsoft’s UAC documentation

Why you can view a service but not change it
Opening Services and having permission to manage every service are separate things. You may be able to inspect service status and configuration without elevation, while starting, stopping, or changing a protected service may require administrative rights or specific permissions on that service.
Microsoft Learn states in its Start-Service documentation: “By default, only members of the Administrators group can start, stop, pause, resume, or restart a service.” The documentation also specifies that administrator-group members need an elevated PowerShell session to use Start-Service. Rights for an individual service can depend on its permissions. Microsoft Learn: Start-Service

If a service action is unavailable or fails, check whether the console is elevated and whether your account is authorized for that service. Do not disable UAC or promote a standard account just to open the console; use an authorized administrator account when the task requires it.
