Open the Files app, find the ZIP archive, and double-click it. If ChromeOS or an archive app asks for a password, enter the one set by the archive’s sender or owner—not your Chromebook sign-in password. Google documents a general workflow for opening ZIP files, but does not promise compatibility with every password-protected ZIP format. If Files cannot open yours, an Android archive app may help on supported Chromebooks; Linux archive utilities are another, more advanced option.
Open the ZIP in Chromebook Files
- Open the Files app and select the location where the archive is saved, such as Downloads or Google Drive.
- Double-click the ZIP file. Google’s instructions say the archive appears in the Files sidebar, where you can browse its contents; double-click an individual file to open it. See Google’s instructions for opening and extracting files.
- If prompted, enter the archive password supplied by the sender or owner. It is separate from your Chromebook account password. If you do not know it, ask the person or service that created the archive; the cited help pages do not describe a way to recover or bypass a forgotten password.
To extract files through the documented Files workflow, right-click the folder and choose Extract all. Google documents this general ZIP workflow, but does not specifically confirm that it works with every password-protected ZIP.

What to try if Files will not open it
Google lists ZIP and RAR among compressed file types Chromebooks can use, but its general support pages do not name password-protected ZIP compatibility, encryption algorithms, or behavior for every ZIP variant. Support for ZIP files generally is not a guarantee that every encrypted archive will open.

Check the file and password first
- Make sure the download has finished, then try opening the archive again.
- Confirm the password with the sender or owner. The Chromebook sign-in password will not unlock an archive unless it happens to be the same password they set.
The cited support material does not provide a complete diagnosis for corrupt, incomplete, unusually large, or differently encrypted ZIP files, so these checks may not resolve every failure.

Try an Android archive app if Google Play is available
ZArchiver’s Google Play listing says it can create and decompress password-protected archives: ZArchiver on Google Play. The listing describes the app’s features, not guaranteed compatibility with every Chromebook or ZIP archive.
Android apps are available only on some Chromebooks. Google says the Chromebook should be up to date, and a work or school administrator may prevent adding the Play Store or installing apps. If the Play Store option is absent in settings, the Chromebook may not support Android apps. Check Google’s guidance on installing Android apps on a Chromebook before relying on this option.

Consider Linux only if you are comfortable with it
A Chromebook Community reply suggested trying Linux unzip applications for a large archive that Files could not open: the community discussion. Treat this as community troubleshooting advice, not an official or universal fix. Linux adds setup and command-line complexity, so it is a fallback for readers already comfortable with the Linux Development Environment.
