For split archives or formats Files cannot handle, keep all parts together and consider a Linux archive utility—but Google’s documentation does not confirm multipart support or set a maximum archive size for Files.
Extract a regular ZIP in the Files app
- Open the Files app and locate the ZIP archive.
- Double-click the ZIP to open it and browse the files inside.
- To extract a group of zipped files in one folder, right-click the folder and choose Extract all.
Google documents ZIP and RAR among supported compressed file types, but that listing does not establish that Files can join split volumes. Google’s reviewed help pages also do not state a maximum archive size. See Google’s Files app instructions and its supported file types guidance.

Check storage before unpacking a large archive
Unpacking needs room on the destination drive, but Google does not publish a Chromebook-specific free-space formula or archive-size threshold. Check available space before starting. Google notes that Chromebook hard-drive space is limited and that Downloads is the default temporary folder on the internal drive; downloaded files may be deleted to free space. Details are in Google’s storage and Downloads guidance.
If internal storage is tight, choose another download location or use compatible external storage. Google cautions that some external devices may not work with every Chromebook; check your device and file-system compatibility, and keep ChromeOS updated. An external drive provides a place to store files, but it does not make an unsupported archive format readable. See Google’s external storage guidance.

Handle a split archive carefully
A split archive consists of multiple parts that a compatible archive utility may need to read together. Download every volume and keep them in the same folder before attempting extraction. Do not rename or extract an arbitrary segment expecting it to reconstruct the whole archive; missing or damaged parts can prevent recovery.
Google’s reviewed documentation does not confirm whether Files can combine multipart ZIP, RAR, or numbered 7z volumes. Its list of supported compressed formats is not a guarantee of split-volume support. If the built-in app does not work, use an archive utility whose documentation explicitly supports the specific format and volume naming scheme.

Use Linux on ChromeOS as an advanced fallback
On a supported, unmanaged Chromebook, the built-in Debian Linux environment offers a terminal and APT package management, which can be used to install command-line archive tools. Setup may be unavailable on work- or school-managed devices.

- Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Developers → Linux development environment → Set up and follow the prompts.
- Move the archive folder into the Linux environment by dragging it into Linux files in the Files app, or right-click the folder and choose Share with Linux. Shared folders appear under
/mnt/chromeos. - Use an archive utility available for your Linux release and confirm that it supports the archive’s exact format and split-volume convention before extracting.
Google explains how to set up Linux on a Chromebook; ChromeOS.dev documents file sharing between ChromeOS and Linux. The Ubuntu 7z reference describes the 7z command-line utility, but package availability and multipart-format support depend on the Linux release and installed package. Linux is not a guarantee that an incomplete or corrupt archive can be recovered.
