For a casual party game where friends need to join quickly, room-code or link-based guest entry is usually the easier choice: players can often enter a code and nickname without creating an account. Accounts are more useful when a game needs a lasting player identity, saved progress, or account-based access. They are not mutually exclusive, and a code is not a privacy guarantee.
What’s the practical difference?
A room code is generally a temporary locator for a particular game session. A player enters the code, link, or QR destination to reach the host’s lobby. Guest entry may let them play under a nickname without registering.

An account identifies a player beyond that one session. Depending on the game, a linked profile may preserve progress or provide account-specific features. A game can offer both: a room code to find the session and accounts for players who want persistent identity.
Compare the options that matter for your group
| Decision | Room-code or guest entry | Player account |
|---|---|---|
| Joining a one-off game | Often quicker: enter a current code, open a link, or scan a QR code. Host settings may add a nickname, identifier, or security step. | Signing in or linking a profile can add setup before play. |
| Keeping identity or progress | A code typically gets a player into a session; it does not itself provide a lasting identity. | Can preserve progress or identity when the specific game supports it. Confirm what carries over in that title. |
| Controlling access | People with a shared code or link may be able to try joining. Look for a passcode, lobby moderation, join lock, or friends-only option. | Some games use account or friend settings to limit access, but the protection depends on the game. |
| Devices and setup | May let guests play through a phone, tablet, browser, or app while the host runs the game. | May require a platform account, linked profile, or game installation. Check the title’s requirements. |
How this works in popular party-game setups
Jackbox: a code and a display name
For a Jackbox game, the host purchases and installs a Party Pack, starts a game, and shares the room code shown in the lobby. Guests go to jackbox.tv and use their phones as controllers. Jackbox says only one person in the group needs to own a product to host; guests do not each need to buy a copy.

- Works in groups from 2-12+ people. Great for large parties, offsites, family gatherings, and anywhere you need instant fun.
- 5 seconds to set up, 1 minute to learn, 30 minutes to play
Jackbox’s support FAQ says players do not need a Jackbox account. They enter a display name after the room code, and past games are stored via cookies on the controller device rather than through a login. That is how this particular service handles joining and history, not a guarantee about other games. The FAQ answer is attributed to Jackbox Games Support’s Evan Jacover and dated July 14, 2023. Kahoot: guest joining with host-controlled steps
Kahoot says players usually do not need an account to join a game. They can enter a game PIN, follow a host-shared link, or scan a QR code. Host settings may also require an identifier, nickname, or security step. A PIN belongs to a particular session and may stop working if the session restarts; if a player disconnects, they may be able to rejoin when the game offers a resume option. Kahoot’s joining instructions explain the available routes.

- Solid game boards with foil inlay
- Hidden roles and secret envelopes for five to ten players
For live games, Kahoot’s optional 2-Step Join asks players to reproduce a pattern displayed on the host’s screen. Kahoot says the pattern refreshes roughly every 10 seconds. The company describes this as effective against most known bot services, but says it cannot guarantee a bot-free game. It recommends combining the measure with lobby moderation and locking the game once expected players have joined. See Kahoot’s 2-Step Join guidance.

Mario Party Superstars: room discovery and linked saves
In Nintendo’s Mario Party Superstars instructions, players can create or join rooms, search by Room ID, and choose Friends Only or Open to All access. A host can also require a room passcode. Players may join as Guests or link a user account: linked users retain certain coins and Mario Party Lv. points in their own User save data, while unlinked players appear as Guest. These are rules documented for this title, not a general promise about Nintendo games. Nintendo’s online-play guide has the room and account details.

- Two teams race to identify their agents from a 5×5 grid, guided by a spymaster who knows each card’s identity
- Spymasters give one-word clues and a number to link multiple cards, encouraging creative thinking
- Teammates guess words matching the clue while avoiding the other team’s agents, bystanders, and the assassin
- Revealing the assassin ends the game instantly, adding high-stakes tension
- Teams may guess up to the clue number plus one, allowing strategic risks or revisiting old clues
When should you choose each?
Choose guest entry for a quick, one-session gathering
- Most players are joining for one evening and do not need persistent profiles.
- You want to minimize setup for a mixed group, especially guests who may not want to register.
- The game supports devices your guests already have, such as phones acting as controllers.
Prefer accounts when continuity matters
- Players want progress or identity to persist across sessions, and the game explicitly supports that for linked accounts.
- The title’s account or friend features are important to how your group plays.
- Your host is willing to handle any sign-in or profile setup required by the game.
Use both if the game supports both
A hybrid setup can make joining simple while still letting players link accounts for persistent benefits. Before choosing a game, check whether guests can enter without linking, what a linked account saves, and whether the host can restrict access. The answer can differ even between games on the same platform.
Are room codes private?
Not by themselves. A code or link makes it easier to find a lobby; anyone who obtains it may be able to try joining, depending on the game’s settings. Look for concrete controls such as a room passcode, Friends Only mode, a moderated lobby, or the ability to lock new arrivals. Kahoot explicitly notes that its 2-Step Join cannot guarantee a bot-free game, so hosts should use moderation and joining controls as well.

Does joining without an account mean no data is collected?
No. Guest entry describes the sign-in requirement, not the game’s full data practices. Jackbox’s privacy policy says its games generally do not collect Personal Information, while identifying technical information such as IP address and account creation as exceptions. It also notes that platform owners may share information such as online ID, country, language, and parental controls, and that third-party services can involve profile or user ID information. Check the policy for the specific game and platform you plan to use. Jackbox’s privacy policy.

- Confirm which device or platform runs the game and whether the host must own or install it.
- Check whether guests can join in a browser or app and whether they need an account, nickname, identifier, or second device.
- Decide whether a one-session guest identity is enough or players need saved progress.
- Find the lobby’s access settings before sharing the code: look for passcodes, friends-only access, moderation, and a join lock.
- Share the current code or link only with the group. If someone disconnects, check whether the game offers a way to resume or rejoin.
These examples document particular implementations, not a controlled usability comparison or a rule for every party game. Account requirements, guest options, security controls, saved progress, and device support vary by title and can change. There is no basis here for claiming that one approach is statistically preferred by players.
