How to Open Links in Firefox Split View and Choose Which Side They Appear On

Open a link beside your current page in Firefox 150 or later, then use Reverse Tabs to swap the left and right panes.

In Firefox 150 or later, right-click a link and select Open Link in Split View to open it beside the page you are viewing. To change which page is on the left or right, use Reverse Tabs in the Split View controls. Mozilla does not document which side the new link occupies by default, so reverse the panes if the order is not what you want.

Open a link in Firefox Split View

The direct link-opening command is documented in Firefox 150.0, first offered to Release channel users on April 21, 2026. It opens the destination alongside the current tab in the same Firefox window.

  1. Right-click the link you want to open.
  2. Select Open Link in Split View.

Mozilla’s Firefox 150 release notes describe the new page as opening “alongside your current tab.” They do not specify whether it initially appears on the left or right. Mozilla Firefox 150.0 Release Notes

Choose which page appears on the left or right

Use Reverse Tabs to swap the two pages. Mozilla says Split View controls are available from the Split View icon in the address bar, the three-dot control in the Split View footer, or the tab’s right-click context menu. Firefox 150 also lists Reverse Tabs in the tab context menu. Mozilla Support: Split View in Firefox

Because the documented default side for a link opened with Open Link in Split View is unspecified, use Reverse Tabs after opening it if you need the pages in a particular left-to-right order.

Other ways to create Split View

Firefox introduced Split View in version 149.0, first offered to Release channel users on March 24, 2026. These desktop methods let you create a two-page view without opening a link directly into it. Mozilla Firefox 149.0 Release Notes

Start with one tab

  1. Right-click the tab and choose Add Split View.
  2. The tab stays on the left. Choose an open tab from the list shown in the right pane, or focus the right pane and type a web address.

Start with two open tabs

  1. Select both tabs in the tab strip.
  2. Right-click either selected tab and choose Open in Split View.

If the selected tabs are far apart in the tab strip, Firefox creates the Split View next to the active tab.

Use the keyboard-assisted method

In the active tab, hold Alt (or Option on macOS) and click another tab in the same window.

Resize panes and understand the limits

Drag the vertical divider to adjust the pane widths. A Split View contains two tabs; Firefox does not allow pinned tabs to be added. Find in Page searches only the active pane, not both pages at once. Mozilla Support: Split View in Firefox

What happens when you close or reopen a window

Firefox restores Split Views with a window when Open previous windows and tabs is enabled, and also when you reopen a recently closed window. Reopening a closed tab with Ctrl+Shift+T (or Command+Shift+T on macOS) does not restore its Split View. Mozilla Support: Split View in Firefox
