To estimate your U.S. take-home pay, calculate the earnings for the pay period, then subtract employee deductions: net pay = gross pay − employee deductions. Gross pay is earnings before deductions; net pay is what remains after them. The amounts depend on your pay schedule, work and overtime, tax withholding details, location, and benefit elections, so there is no single percentage that applies to everyone.
1. Calculate gross pay for the pay period
Use earnings for the paycheck period—not your year-to-date total. Include regular wages and other compensation earned in that period, such as applicable overtime. Gross pay is before taxes and other employee deductions.

Hourly pay
Start with ordinary hours multiplied by the applicable hourly rate, then add overtime and other earned compensation where applicable. For example, if a covered, nonexempt employee earns $20 per hour and works 40 ordinary hours plus two overtime hours in a workweek, the federal FLSA baseline of 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 would make the overtime rate $30. On that simplified assumption, gross pay for those hours would be $860: (40 × $20) + (2 × $30). Actual overtime pay can depend on coverage, exemptions, state law, agreements, and how the regular rate is determined. The U.S. Department of Labor’s FLSA Overtime Calculator Advisor is an estimator for the federal rule, not a determination of every worker’s pay rights.
Salary pay
Translate the salary to the pay period shown on the paycheck using the employer’s schedule. For instance, an annual salary divided by 26 gives a simple per-period figure for a 26-paycheck schedule; a different schedule requires a different divisor. Check the paystub for the employer’s actual salary earnings and any adjustments rather than assuming every period is identical.

Keep period and year-to-date amounts separate
A paystub may show both this period’s earnings and year-to-date totals. Use the current-period gross figure to calculate that paycheck’s net pay. Year-to-date figures summarize amounts accumulated across earlier pay periods and should not be subtracted from one period’s deductions.
2. Identify employee deductions
Subtract deductions taken from the employee’s pay, not every cost associated with payroll. Depending on the paycheck and jurisdiction, employee deductions may include:
- Federal income-tax withholding.
- Social Security and Medicare taxes.
- State or local tax withholding, where applicable.
- Employee-elected benefit or retirement contributions.
This is a list of common categories, not a universal checklist. The applicable taxes, benefit elections, and amounts vary. Employer payroll-tax costs are not employee deductions to subtract from the employee’s gross pay.

Federal income-tax withholding is not the final tax bill
Federal withholding is money paid during the year toward expected federal income tax; it does not determine the worker’s final annual tax or refund by itself. Withholding depends on the employee’s current Form W-4 information, pay frequency, multiple jobs, other income or deductions, and the method and tables applicable to that tax year.
For 2026, employers use the relevant methods and tables in IRS Publication 15-T (2026), Federal Income Tax Withholding Methods. The publication includes 2026 Form W-4 and withholding guidance, including guidance related to qualified overtime compensation. Check the current edition for the tax year in question, since withholding rules and tables can change.
Overtime and the qualified-overtime tax deduction
For covered, nonexempt workers, the general federal FLSA standard is at least 1.5 times the regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Coverage, exemptions, state requirements, collective agreements, and regular-rate calculations can affect the actual amount; the federal standard should not be treated as a universal formula for every worker. The Department of Labor’s overtime estimator for nonexempt employees also provides guidance on estimates and records.

This is a tax-return deduction with qualification rules—not a change to the definition of gross or net pay, and not a reason to omit overtime from paycheck earnings or payroll-tax treatment. 3. Subtract deductions to estimate net pay
Once you have the gross earnings and the employee deductions for the same pay period, use:
Net pay = gross pay − total employee deductions
For a useful estimate, use the actual deduction amounts from a paystub or current employer payroll information. Do not apply a guessed flat tax rate to gross pay: federal withholding is individual, and state or local taxes and elected deductions may also affect the result. The IRS defines net pay, or take-home pay, as the amount the employee receives after deductions in its Understanding Taxes payroll tutorial.

4. Use calculators as estimates, then check the paystub
Official calculators can help with different parts of the calculation, but neither replaces the actual paystub or covers every employer-specific deduction and jurisdictional rule.
- IRS Tax Withholding Estimator: helps employees review federal income-tax withholding using their circumstances. Its result is an estimate, not a guarantee of final tax owed.
- Department of Defense Financial Readiness Program Payroll Deductions Calculator: estimates net pay and says it uses IRS Publications 15 and 15-T; it indicates 2026 income-tax withholding calculations. It does not resolve every state or employer-specific deduction.
- IRS Publication 15 (2026), Employer’s Tax Guide: employer-oriented federal payroll and tax guidance.
For a meaningful comparison between estimates, keep gross earnings, pay frequency, location, W-4 details, benefit elections, and other deductions the same. Confirm that a calculator uses the appropriate tax year and jurisdiction and distinguish per-period results from year-to-date figures.

5. Reconcile the estimate with your paycheck
- Find the current-period gross earnings on the paystub and confirm that the hours, rate, salary period, overtime, and other compensation are correct.
- Review each employee deduction and compare it with the estimate. Check whether taxes, benefits, or retirement contributions were included or omitted.
- Compare the result with the paystub’s net pay for that same period. If the figures differ, look for a missing deduction, a different pay-period basis, an adjustment, or a withholding assumption that does not match your records.
- If federal withholding seems inconsistent with your circumstances, review your Form W-4 information and use the IRS estimator. For pay-rate or overtime concerns, check the applicable federal and state rules and consult the relevant labor agency.
