A .CDG file used for karaoke holds lyrics and graphics, not a song’s audio and not a general-purpose compressed archive. To hear the song, open the CDG alongside its matching MP3 in karaoke software that supports CDG or MP3+G. If your file is a ZIP, BIN, or physical CD+G disc, use the route for that format instead.
How do I open a CDG file?
- Find the matching audio. Look in the same folder for an MP3 with the same base filename as the CDG. Keep the files together.
- Use a karaoke player with CDG or MP3+G support. In the Siglos Karaoke Player/Recorder 2 workflow, choose Load File, select the CDG file, then start playback. The player uses the matching MP3 for audio; full-screen mode is available for lyrics. See the Siglos quick start and its playing instructions.
Opening the CDG alone may show lyrics without sound if its matching MP3 is missing. A CDG is the graphics component of an MP3+G karaoke track; it is not usually the audio track itself.

What do CDG, ZIP, BIN, and CD+G mean?
These labels refer to different parts or packaging of karaoke content, so first identify what you actually have.

Siglos lists CDG, ZIP, BIN, and CD+G disc tracks among supported karaoke formats, but support depends on the application and workflow. Its format list is a useful example, not a guarantee that every karaoke program opens every format.

How do I play a zipped MP3+G karaoke file?
A ZIP is an archive that may contain the separate CDG and MP3 files; it is not itself a CDG file. If your karaoke player supports ZIP karaoke files, try opening the ZIP there. If it does not, extract or inspect the archive with standard archive software, then check that the CDG and its matching MP3 are both present. Open the CDG in a CDG-capable karaoke player.
Why is there no sound when I open a CDG file?
The most common issue to check is whether the matching MP3 is present. Confirm that the CDG and MP3 have the same base filename and are in the same folder. If the audio file is absent, the CDG by itself generally cannot provide the song.
If the sound plays but lyrics do not appear from a physical disc, check whether both the drive and playback software support CD+G subchannel data. Jim Bumgardner’s CD+G technical reference explains that disc graphics are carried in subchannels, which an optical drive must expose for computer playback.
Can I play a CD+G disc on my computer?
Possibly, but an ordinary optical drive’s ability to read audio CDs does not establish that it can expose the extra CD+G graphics data. Check CD+G support for the specific drive and the playback application. In the documented Siglos workflow, choose Load CD and select the correct optical drive in the application settings if more than one is installed. Its disc playback instructions describe that route.
Disc playback or extraction therefore requires more than opening a loose CDG file. CAVS also documents an external disc drive as an optional component for disc playback or extraction in its PlayCDG Online manual; verify CD+G capability rather than relying on the word “external” or “optical” alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if a general media player will not open it?
Try a karaoke-specific player whose documentation explicitly lists CDG or MP3+G support. FileInfo notes that CDG support through VLC or Winamp plug-ins can be inconsistent; a general media player’s ability to play MP3 audio does not mean it can display synchronized CDG lyrics. See FileInfo’s CDG file reference.

What does the CD+G format store?
For a physical CD+G track, graphics are carried alongside audio in subchannel data. Jim Bumgardner’s 1995 technical explanation describes 75 sectors per second and 96 bytes of subchannel data per sector, divided into four 24-byte packets. The distinction matters in practice: the graphics are not simply an image file stored alongside the audio on the disc, and the computer’s drive has to make the relevant data available. The figures and format explanation are from his CD+G Revealed, an older technical reference rather than a current compatibility list.

Can I create or edit CD+G tracks?
Opening and playing karaoke files is different from authoring them. For a creation task, PowerKaraoke documents a CD+G authoring product on its Karaoke CD+G Creator page. Check current compatibility and terms directly with the provider; the cited page does not establish compatibility with every current computer setup.
